Martens-Sagiao -- Melinda Ellen "Mindy," 42, Hastings, formerly North Platte, died Saturday (6/1/2002). Born, Sioux City, Iowa, (7/25/59) to Harry Dean and Maxine LaVonne Chandler Martens. In 1965, family moved to North Platte. Graduated, North Platte High School, 1977, and was captain of the varsity volleyball team, member of tennis team and Letter Club. Attended, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 1977-81, with a full athletic scholarship in volleyball and played for coach Terry Pettit. Graduated, UNL, B.S. degree with double major in health education and physical education with coaching endorsement. 1981-83, interned at Women's Athletic Department and was graduate assistant volleyball coach; 1983-84, was assistant volleyball coach, University of Pennsylvania. Entered U.S. Air Force, December 1985, and received several awards and commendations; one award was Overseas Long Tour in Germany; also played volleyball for the Air Force and armed forces. First woman in Air Force to complete a high altitude drop mission. Was a physiology technician with the Mobility Command Unit 92nd Air Medical Group. At the time of her car accident (March 1995) and retirement from the Air Force, was an E-5 staff sergeant at Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Wash. Received Air Force Achievement Medal and First Oak Leaf Cluster and the Meritorious Service Medal at her retirement. Married Ieti M. Sagiao, March 1992, while in the service. They lived in Hawaii, 1997-2001, before returning to Hastings to be closer to family.

Nines -- Paul R., 65, Malcolm, died Sunday (6/2/2002) in Lincoln. Born, Cumberland, Md. (1/21/37). Attended grade school at Wiley Ford, W.Va. Entered the U.S. Air Force, February 1956. Attended basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, after which he was transferred to the Lincoln Air Force Base in May 1956, spending four years and completing his military career. Married Burdine M. Kruse (5/29/60) at St. Pauls United Church of Christ (Osage), Cook. To this union three children were born. Paul worked for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. for 31 years. He also played lead guitar in a country and western band for five years. After his retirement, Paul spent many hours doing his favorite sport -- fishing -- as well as playing his guitar and drawing family pictures.
