Kuper -- Dr. Herbert Dietrich, 92, Columbus, died Tuesday (9/10/2002) at home. Born, Nelson (3/25/10) to Dietrich Gerhart and Maria Henrietta (Schmidt). After graduating from high school in Nelson and teaching two years in a rural school, he began pre-medical studies at Hastings College. He graduated from University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1936. Married, Marie Bay, Jan. 9, 1938, in Omaha. Dr. Kuper first practiced in Kenesaw and Leigh before moving to Columbus in 1947. He also took postgraduate work in general surgery and gynecology in Chicago and New York. At the time of his retirement in 1983, he had been a practicing family physician for 47 years.
Continuing his lifelong interest in education after his teaching career ended, Dr. Kuper served on school boards in Leigh and later Columbus, where his 16 years of service included being president of the Columbus Public School Board. He was a lifetime member of PTA and was honored in 1991 with the Columbus Public School Bell Award for his work in education. He was also past director of Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce and past president of Columbus Rotary and Columbus Community Hospital Staff. He was a member of American Medical Association, Academy of Family Physicians and member and past president of Nebraska Chapter of Family Practice. Member, Federated Church, Lebanon Lodge 323 A.F. & A.M., Platte Valley York Rite and Sesostris Shrine Temple. In recognition of his community service, Dr. Kuper was crowned King Ferdinand X during annual Columbus Days festivities in 1984.
