Hughes - M. Dale "Lefty," 79, Lincoln, died Thursday (12/6/01) at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island. Born, Ravenna (4/6/22) to Phillip Hughes and Elsie LaFever. Grew up in Lincoln, graduated from Jackson High School. Entered U.S. Navy (9/22/42), served during World War II, honorably discharged (9/24/45). Married Helen E. Grice (6/23/45), after which the couple lived in Lincoln, where he later operated Our Place Restaurant and Mobile Host Catering in University Place, with his family. Member, Fourth Presbyterian Church, Lincoln; Wood River/Alda VFW. Volunteered in Ord Elementary Grandfriend program. Enjoyed fishing, playing cards, square dancing and was an avid builder. He was responsible for starting a unique holiday tradition by showing their Snow Village collection at their lakeside home. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, a wonderful dad and a loyal friend.
Survivors: wife, Helen, Wood River; sons, daughter-in-law, Allen and DiAnne, Ord, Phil, Malcolm; daughters, sons-in-law, Susan Ray, Lincoln, Candy and Bob Popek, Firth, Michelle Miller and Rob Benford, Carbondale, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
