Makovicka - Rita, 39, Lincoln, formerly York, died Thursday (2/22/2001). Born, York (9/2/61) to Francis and Frances (Mazour) Makovicka. 1979 graduate, York High School, where she was a member of the Girls State Championship Basketball team in 1977 and 1979. Recognized as the Female Athlete of the Century by the York News-Times. Attended the University of Wyoming with a basketball scholarship and was MVP at the Alaska Shoot-Out and an All-American Basketball player. After graduation she was assistant volleyball coach at Western Illinois University and later taught and coached at the Harvard High School in Nebraska. Joined the Lincoln Fire Department in October 1993. Named Firefighter of the Year in 1999. Unit Performance Award recipient, September 1997 and February 2000. Chairperson of the Minority Recruitment Committee for the Lincoln Fire Department. Member, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, York. Firefighter and EMT with the Lincoln Fire Department.
