He was the third oldest of six children and attended grades one through eight at District. No. 34 in rural Hayes County. He graduated from Wauneta High School with the class of 1942, and following his high school graduation, Virgil started farming with his father.

The farm was Virgil's life work, and together with his beloved Frances, they raised their sons on the same farm where he was born 15 miles northeast of Wauneta. He lived on that farm until he had a debilitating stroke during the first week of May, 2005. Following his stroke, he was a patient at Madonna Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln, Neb., for a brief time, and then became a resident of the Belle Terrace Care Facility in Tecumseh, Neb., until his death on Dec. 25, 2005.
