Brandy Dettman
Brandy Dettman, 30, of Aurora, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005 at her home.
Graveside services were held Friday afternoon, Aug. 19 at the Aurora Cemetery with Rev. Jim Garfield officiating.
Brandy Lynn Dettman, daughter of Larry and Mary (Bright) Dettman, was born Sept. 16, 1974 in Aurora where she grew up and graduated from high school.
She loved to babysit her cousins, nieces and nephew. She spent a lot of time volunteering at Memorial Community Care and Edgerton Explorit Center. She liked to write poetry and had a poem published in a poetry book.
She was a member of the ARC of Hamilton and Merrick County and had been a member of the Special Olympics team.
Survivors include her parents, Larry and Mary Dettman of McCook; one sister, Michelle Colburn of Aurora; two nieces; her grandfather, Archie Bright of Grand Island and grandmother, Marcella Burch of Central City; several uncles, aunts, cousins and other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Marie Bright; grandfather, Lyle Dettman and one uncle.

Phyllis Haack
Phyllis Haack, 67, of Aurora, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005 at Shands Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 27 at 10:30 a.m. in the Assembly of God Church in Aurora with Rev. Jim Garfield officiating. Phyllis Jean Haack, daughter of George Leroy and Zella (Campbell) Butterbaugh, was born Feb. 1, 1938 in Hebron where she grew up. She moved with her family to Hastings in the early 1950s. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1956.
She married Jerry Sherman Haack, Sr. Jan. 9, 1960 at the First Christian Church in Hastings. They moved to the Hamilton County area and she spent most of her adult life there.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Aurora. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry Haack, Sr. of Aurora; three sons, Michael D. Haack of Hastings, David W. Haack of Aurora and Jerry S. Haack, Jr. of Woodbine, Ga.; three daughters, Leslie R. Worth of Naples, Fla., Rebecca S. Bussinger of Alda and Carol L. Berney of Aurora; 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one sister, Marlyn Scribner of Hastings and special family friends, Grover Camp of Springfield, Mo. and Bernadette Kasmanchy of Aurora.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
LeRoy 'Fritz' Penner
LeRoy 'Fritz' Penner, 89, of Aurora, died Friday morning, Sept. 23, 2005 at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.

LeRoy Fred 'Fritz' Penner, son of Fred and Genevieve (Austin) Penner, was born June 17, 1916 in Stockham where he grew up and attended school until the 10th grade.
He jumped freight trains in Kansas, Arkansas, Oregon and Missouri. He, Ernie and Festus VanDusen and Ezra Gellantly stopped at hobo camps as they had no money. They also would stop and work for $2 per day.
In 1940, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was in boot camp at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. He was sent to Hawaii and then spent three years in the Philippines. He went to Dutch New Guinea and Maloney Bay, returning home in 1948.
He married Phyllis Gwendolyn Cass Aug. 20, 1948 and they lived all their married live in Aurora. She died Nov. 28, 1993.
He drove a truck for the county and then was a line foreman for the telephone company for 34 years.
He was a member of the Aurora United Methodist Church and Vets Club.
Survivors include his two sons, Steve (Dee) Penner of North Platte and Mike (Stephanie) Penner of Aurora; two sisters, Dorothy Newlun and Anne Medaris, both of Aurora; two brothers, Curly (Betty) Penner of Aurora and Melvin 'Jake' (Elaine) Penner of Grand Island and sister-in-law Fern Penner of Hastings; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife; one brother, Ernie; one sister, Thelma Fenster.
Elvin 'El' Ediger
Elvin 'El' Ediger, 79, of Aurora, died Monday morning, Sept. 26, 2005 at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 at the First Christian Church in Aurora with Pastor Sam Fox and Pastor Bob Pier officiating. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary.

Elvin A. Ediger, son of John B. and Elizabeth (Wiens) Ediger, was born Aug. 18, 1926 in Henderson. He grew up in Hampton and graduated from Hampton High School in 1944.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, landing in the Philippines the day before his 19th birthday. He was honorably discharged Feb. 7, 1948.
He married Jacqueline M. Hansen March 19, 1950 in Aurora. She died April 13, 1969.
He married Lavonne (Bonnie) Ernst Sept. 4, 1977.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Hamilton County and then as a mechanic at Grosshans Sales and Service. Later he worked as service manager for Stan Allen Motors and before retirement, he worked as sales manager for Thieszen Irrigation.
He was a member of the First Christian Church where he was past chairman of the board and a member of the church choir. He was a Sunday school superintendent and teacher at the EUB Church. He also was an avid gardener and dedicated walker. He loved to restore antique furniture and was a master mechanic. He was a past member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Ediger of Aurora; three children, Rick (Patti) Ediger of Gering, Teresa (Joy) Johnson of Nebraska City and Robert (Carrie) Ediger of Lincoln; stepchildren, Bonita Forsman of Aurora, Gale (Michelle) Ernst of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Tari (Steve) Loerger of Wichita, Kan.; 18 grandchldren, Eric (Sara) and Bret Forsman; Patrick, Matthew and Elizabeth Ediger; Kate and Callie Ernst; Jacquelline (Brent) Newman, Justin (Lisa), Kelli and Lacey Rasmussen; Michael, Patrick and Christopher Loerger and Nolan and Mitchell Ediger; three great-grandchildren; five brothers and sisters, Marie Schultz of Hillsboro, Kan., John Ediger of Reedley, Calif., Esther Larsen of Grand Island, Marvin Ediger of Elk River, Minn. and Harold Ediger of San Jose, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, son Michael Ediger and grandson, Andrew Ediger.
Byron Blixt
Former Aurora resident Byron Blixt, 90, of Eugene, Ore., died Sept. 8, 2005.
Funeral services were Sept. 12.
Byron Elmer Blixt was born Sept. 5, 1915 in Aurora to Elmer and Esther (Danielson) Blixt.
He married Vivian Tatjes Jan. 15, 1949 in Santa Barbara, Calif.
He served in the Army during World War II. He had worked in sales in the food service industry.
He enjoyed gardening, travel, home improvement projects and bow ties. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Eugene.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Diane Lopuson of Santa Barbara, Calif.; two sons, Steve Blixt of Portland, Ore. and Mike Blixt of Sacramento, Calif.; a brother, Melvin Blixt of Irvine, Calif; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Jeff, in 2001.

Frances Paben
Frances Paben, 86, of Hampton, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005 at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.

Frances Mae Paben, daughter of Admiral and Ellen (Nelson) Knerr, was born Oct. 23, 1918 in Stromsburg where she attended both grade and high school.
She married Ervin Paben in Osceola on Feb. 27, 1936. They lived on the Paben family farm northeast of Hampton. As a farm wife she loved cooking and keeping an immaculate house.
In February of 1993 she moved to Hamilton Manor in Aurora where she lived until her death. Her husband died Nov. 15, 1996.
She was a member of the United Lutheran Church in Hampton and Easter Star Lodge in Polk. She enjoyed bowling for many years in Aurora, both on a singles team and also with her husband in a doubles league. She loved reading mystery novel, especially of the western variety.
Survivors include her daughter, Twila (Bill) McCracken of Omaha and one son, Ervin 'Butch' (Karen) Paben of Columbus; one sister, Bettie Casella of Sunnyside, Utah; four grandchildren, Lauren (Mark) Herring of Omaha, Troy (Lisa) Paben of Columbus, Lisa (Tim) Larson of Beaver Lake and Kristen (Rodney) Griess of Lincoln; nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters and four brothers.
Rev. James Hahn
Former Hampton resident Rev. James Hahn, 52, of Ferndale, Wash., died Friday, Oct. 21, 2005 in a Seattle hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 29 at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hampton.
James Howard Hahn, son of Howard and Arleen (Zierott) Hahn, was born Sept. 9, 1953. He grew up in the Hampton area and attended Hampton Lutheran School. He graduated from Aurora High School in 1971.
He attended pre-seminary training at St. Paul's College in Concordia, Mo. and Concordia Teachers College in Seward. He began his seminary training at Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, Ill. The seminary moved to Ft. Wayne, Ind. in 1976. He served his vicarage at Trinity Lutheran Church in Danville, Ill. He graduated from the seminary in 1979.
He was ordained into the holy ministry at his home congregation, St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hampton. After his ordination he served as minister in Yale and Iroquois, S.D. until 1982 when he accepted a call as an associate pastor in Fremont. He then moved to accept a call in Wray, Colo. in 1985 and to Kansas City, Mo. in 1989, Granada Hills, Calif. in 1995 and most recently to Bellingham, Wash.
While serving as associate pastor in Fremont he met his wife, Karen Wittig. They were married June 2, 1985.
Survivors include his wife, Karen; five children, Sarah, Rachel, Leah, Hannah and Micah; his father and mother; one brother, Dave (Kim) Hahn of Fremont; one sister, Mary (Jerry) Owens of Harvard; one niece, three nephews, aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends.
Alice Athey
Alice Athey, 88, of San Francisco, Calif., died Monday, Oct. 24, 2005 at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.

Alice Marie Athey, daughter of George and Ruth (Sundberg) Akerson, was born Feb. 16, 1017 on a farm northwest of Aurora. She attended country school and graduated from Aurora High School in 1933. She graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, then taught country school northwest of Aurora and at Battle Creek.
She married Verl Athey in December 1941 at Reno, Nev. They lived in various places while her husband was in the Air Force. He died in an airplane crash in Seoul, Korea in June of 1953. She worked for the Social Security Administration in Boston, Denver and San Francisco. She moved to Hamilton Manor in 2004.
Survivors include her nieces and nephews, including Ron and Marsha Akerson and Scott Athey of Aurora; sister-in-law, Nelda Akerson of Aurora; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Willis and Wilbur Akerson and a sister-in-law, Doris Akerson.
Russell Schrock
Russell Schrock, 97, of Aurora, died Monday, Nov. 21, 2005 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Russell B. Schrock, son of Elmer and Alice (Fross) Schrock, was born Feb. 20, 1908 in Hamilton County. He grew up in Giltner and graduated from Giltner High School.
He married Buelah Hurst Jan. 5, 1933. They lived on a farm around Giltner until 1975 until 1975 when they retired and moved to Aurora. He worked for Pinkerton Security Services at Bonnavilla for over 20 years. His wife died Sept. 6, 1999.
He was a member of the First Christian Church. He always kept busy and loved to raise a garden.
Survivors include his three children, Eugene Schrock of Aurora, Van (Linda) Schrock of Lincoln and Sharon Waline of Greenwood; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife; one grandson, Jon; a son-in-law, Roger Waline, a brother, Carl and sister, Luella.
Walter Schaffert
Former Aurora resident Walter Schaffert, 86, of Lincoln, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2005.
Memorial services were held Thursday, Nov. 17 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Lincoln and burial was in Lincoln Memorial Park. The Revs. Verdell Schram and Steven Heinsen officiated.
Walter Samuel Schaffert, son of John and Rose (Wagner) Schaffert, was born July 19, 1919 in Aurora where he grew up and received his education. He attended St. John's Lutheran College in Winfield, Kan. from 1938 to 1940, then joined the armed services in June of 1941, serving until Nov. of 1945. He was a World War II veteran with the 89th Field Artillery Division.
He married Arleen Troester of Hampton on Dec. 25, 1942.
He was a certified public accountant and retired corporate officer with Lincoln Mutual Life Insurance Company.
He was a member of Hillcrest Country Club and American Legion Post 3. He enjoyed gardening, bird watching and golf.
Survivors include his wife, Arleen; four sons, Jim (Karen) Schaffert of Lincoln, Fred (Robin) Schaffert of Lincoln, Tom Schaffert of Lincoln, Tim (Lori) Schaffert of Clearwater, Fla.; one daughter, Glenda (Lynn) Rathjen of Grand Island; one sister, Bertha Arndt of Aurora; three sisters-in-law, Virginia Schaffert of Aurora, Arlene Schaffert of Ontario, Calif. and Betty Pallack of Michigan; eight grandchildren, Andrew and Rebecca Rathjen, Ryan and Heather Rathjen, Todd and Danielle Schaffert, Greg Schaffert, Sally and Jason Brunott, Angie Cronican, Hanna Schaffert and Aidan Schaffert; five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers.
Richard Blase
Former Hordville resident Richard L. 'Rick' Blase, 54, of Gothenburg, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2005 at his home.
Services were Wednesday, Nov. 16 at the American Lutheran Church of Gothenburg with parish ministry associate Lonna Grabenstein and Rev. Matt Coplen officiating. Burial was in the Gothenburg Cemetery.
Richard L. Blase, son of Harold and Shirley (Thomas) Blase, was born Nov. 17, 1950 in Stromsburg. He grew up on the family farm near Hordville. He attended school in Hordville, graduating from Hordville High School in 1969.
He married Karla Shoup in 1972. They lived in Lincoln before moving to Gothenburg in 1977 to manage McVay Memorial Chapel.
He married Sherri L. Garrett May 16, 1987 in Gothenburg.
In 1994 they purchased the McVay Funeral Home and began operating it as Blase Memorial Chapel. In 2000, they purchased Blase-Wetzel Funeral Home in Curtis.
He served as mayor of Gothenburg from 1990 to 1998 and was president of the Nebraska Funeral Directors Association from 1999 to 2000. He also was a member of the Gothenburg Rotary Club, Wild Horse Golf Club, Community Playhouse and the American Lutheran Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Jill (Joel) Loos of Ashland, Terri Blase of Chicago, Ill. and Samantha Blase of Gothenburg; his parents, Harold and Shirley Blase of Central City; mother and father-in-law, Arlond and Creta Garrett of Gothenburg; one sister, Sandy (Duane) DeMers of Hordville; three brothers, Bob (Avis) Blase of Polk, Randy (Jan) Blase of Central City and Rod (Cindy) Blase of Hordville; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sherri, on Oct. 10, 2002 and his grandparents.

Gene McHargue
Earl Eugene 'Gene' McHargue, 95, of Aurora, died Monday, Nov. 21, 2005 at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.

Earl Eugene McHargue, son of Earl and Pearl (Disney) McHargue, was born March 3, 1910, in Central City. He graduated from Central City High School in 1928, he then attended The Gregg College in Chicago and the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
On Dec. 19, 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve in Kansas City, Mo. He was immediately assigned duty as Yeomen 2nd Class (secretary) to the commanding officer in charge of recruiting. Several months later, he was made chief petty officer and was transferred to a Flag Staff ship, sailing to Leyte and later to Manilla in the Philippines, then docking in Brisbane, Australia for several months until the end of the war. He then returned to the position he formerly held with the International Paper Company in Kansas City, Mo. He spent most of his working years with this company in their offices in Omaha, Kansas City and Mobile, Ala.
On April 7, 1951 he married Aline Clare Heckman in St. Paul's Methodist Church in Lincoln. After his retirement on Jan. 1, 1975, they made their home in Roswell, N.M.. In 1991, they moved to a retirement complex in Grand Island. They also spent time in Odessa, Tex. and York. Since August of 2001, they lived in Aurora. His wife died Aug. 25, 2005
As a very accomplished pianist, he performed in many concerts, enjoyed playing for friends and family and accompanied groups at the rest home. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three brothers, William, Edward and Bernard McHargue; and one sister, LaVerne Christensen.
Emma M. Freese
Emma M. Freese, 66, of Central City, mother of Aurora resident Donovan Freese, died Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2005 at her home.
Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005 in the United Methodist Church in Central City with the Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery at a later date.

Mrs. Freese was born Oct. 10, 1939 to John and Nellie (Bennett) Bibbey in Mitchell. She grew up there and received her education at Mitchell High School.
She married Donald L. Freese Dec. 2, 1967 in Hastings. While in Mitchell, she worked at the nursing home. In Hastings, she worked at the Hastings Tribune and Gas-n-Shop. She worked at a caf' while living in Superior. The couple then moved to Central City in 1980, where she worked at Long Term Care, Eagles #3795, Community Care, Senior Center and Gas-n-Shop. She also worked with her husband at various jobs including; Yellow Diamond Buslines, Grand Island Express and Roman Driving Company.
She enjoyed crocheting, fishing, and making quilts. She also enjoyed going for coffee at Gas-n-Shop. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Eagles #3795 and the Central City Senior Center.
Survivors include her husband, Donald of Central City; two sons, Robert (Judith) Freese of Hastings and Donovan (Pam) Freese of Aurora; one daughter, Renee' (Kris) Erickson of Central City; one sister, Mary (Richard) McCready of Mithchell; three brothers, Charles Bibbey of Bayard, John Bibbey of Conoga Park, Calif. and Jack (Dee) Bibbey of Scottsbluff; eight grandchildren, Creszen of Wichita, Kan. Jessica and Kaylee Freese of Aurora; Rachelle, Alechia, Chelsey, Kristopher and Edie Erickson of Central City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Peggy; two brothers,Vernon and James 'Pat' Bibbey and a sister-in-law, Maryln Bibbey.
Lloyd Dietrich
Lloyd Dietrich, 75, of Aurora, died Friday, Nov. 25, 2005 at Beverly Healthcare in Fullerton.

Lloyd Allen Heizelman was born March 11, 1930 in Minot, N.D. to Ferdinand and Laura (Dietrich) Heizelman. His grandparents, William and Johanna Dietrich raised him in Sawyer, N.D. His name was legally changed to Dietrich when he was 15 years old. He attended school in Sawyer, N.D. He moved with his grandparents to Lodi, Calif. in 1941.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army Nov. 19, 1951 and spent 13 months and six days in Korea. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and the United Nations Service Medal. Upon his return to the United States, he entered the Army Chemical Division where he was rated top secret. He was deployed to various locations in the United States during his tenure. He was discharged Sept. 21, 1955 as a staff sergeant.
He married Barbara Smith May 20, 1954 at the EUB Church in Aurora. They farmed southwest of Aurora, moving to the farm southwest of Marquette in 1956.
He was an avid gun collector and traveled to gun shows many winters. His love for hunting elk spanned 30 years. He also loved fishing and had become a collector of lures.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Aurora; three children, Laura (Tom) Deets of Pleasanton, Brenda (Don) Wohlgemuth of Holdrege and Barry (Rhonda) Dietrich of Marquette; eight grandchildren, Thad Deets, Russell Deets, Shane Wohlgemuth, Chase Wohlgemuth, Kelsi Wohlgemuth, Joshua Dietrich, Gabe Dietrich and Paige Dietrich; his mother, Laura Grauman; his half brothers and sisters, James, Ronald and Garry Heizelman, Janice Knippelberg, Judy Hystad, and Ardis Aasen; one brother, Jimmy Grauman and two sisters, Cynthia Rains and Barbara Grauman.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Chad Deets, his father and brothers, Virgil and Darrell Grauman.
Warren 'Red' Carlson
Warren 'Red' Carlson, 80, of Aurora, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2005 at his home.

Hideko Wright

Hideko Naito Wright was born March 27, 1927 in Yamanachi, Japan. She attended school through the sixth grade then had to quit school to take care of her sisters when her parents died. She then went to work in a silk factory.
She married Dale Wayne Wright Sept. 21, 1960 in Japan. They moved to Phillips in 1969. She went to work at Delicious Foods in Grand Island in 1974 and retired from there in 1990. Her husband died Dec. 2, 1996 and she moved to Lincoln to live with her daughter in 1997. In September of 2004 she moved to Lancaster Manor.
She loved gardening and flowers and even mowing the grass. She especially loved her grandchildren. She also liked going to the casino and playing the slots and getting together with her Japanese friends and going to Omaha to eat at the Japanese sushi bar.
Survivors include her daughter, Fusako (Jeff) Hadenfeldt of Lincoln; two grandchildren, Luke and Jessica Hadenfeldt of Lincoln and three sisters in Japan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers.
