Funeral services were held Mon., Mar. 11 at 2:30 p.m. at the Ord Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Michael Chase officiated. She was cremated following the services. Linda Nance was organist and Tenille Rogers was vocalist. Honorary pallbearers were Ronnie Boyce, Rich Patrick, Mike Psota, Eldon Ingraham, Harlan Green and Tom Frazer. Thomas Franklin "Kelly" Bilstein, 79, of Amelia died Sat., June 22, 2002 after a short battle with cancer.

Mr. Bilstein was born July 5, 1922 at Swan Lake in Holt County to Gustav and Manetta (Nott) Bilstein.
On Aug. 26, 1944 he married Doris Gumb in Burke, SD. He was inducted into the US Army on Nov. 18, 1944. He served in France and Germany and received an honorable discharge on Apr. 4, 1946.

She was born Mar. 3, 1938 near Almeria to Ernest and Hildia (Jarvis) Abbott. She attended Liberty School, country school through the eighth grade and high school at Taylor. She held various secretarial jobs through the years including editing and compiling the newsletter for the State Nurses Association of Nebraska and working in the office of Urban League in Omaha.

Mrs. Babka was born Mar. 27, 1912 at Ord to Lars and Rosa (Miska) Larsen. She was raised at Ord and graduated from Ord High School in 1930. She taught rural country school for several years.

Mr. Gogan was born Mar. 16, 1915. He attended Hastings College in Nebraska on a track scholarship. There he won many awards in track for running the mile and two mile events and held the record for the two-mile event for some time. He spent most of his life as a factory worker in the automotive industry and also acquired many real estate properties.
Survivors include two sisters, Jeanette Lueck and LaVern Moore and a brother, William Gogan of Ord.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille, four brothers and a sister.

She received a teaching certificate from Kearney State Teachers College and taught in rural schools west of Spalding, north of North Loup, Fish Creek and Big Springs.

She graduated from Osceola High School in 1927 and then attended Kearney State Teachers College. She taught school in Garden County in western Nebraska.

Mr. Lindsey was born Apr. 2, 1926 in Burwell to Ray and Ethel (Lewis) Lindsey. He entered the US Navy on Feb. 22, 1945 and was honorably discharged Apr. 16, 1946.
On Nov. 8, 1947 he married Wilda Clark at the home of her parents. The couple lived in the Calamus community near Burwell where they farmed and ranched. He also worked at Burwell Lumber and Coal. In 1962 they moved into Burwell. He worked at the Burwell Elementary School as custodian for 40 years. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Nov. 8, 1997.

Mr. Rutar was born Nov. 2, 1921 in Arcadia to Rudolph and Apolina (Strochota) Rutar, both of whom came from Czechoslovakia. As a child he lived on a farm near Arcadia where he attended country school until the eighth grade. He then attended high school in Arcadia and finished his education in Veteran, WY where he graduated from high school in 1939.
On May 8, 1948 he married Mildred Slangal at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Jordon, OR. He spent his life farming and ranching in Wyoming. He retired from farming in 1981 but continued to be involved with community organizations.

Mrs. Hunt was born Apr. 27, 1929 at Ord, the daughter of Ralph and Lyla (Stone) Holmes. She lived in Custer County until the death of her mother. The family moved to Washington State where they resided for a year. She then attended local schools in Valley and Custer Counties and later Arcadia High School.

Mrs. Chaffin was born May 23, 1918 on her grandfather's homestead to John and Mary (Marecek) Kruml. When she was four years old she lived for nine months with her parents and two older brothers in Czechoslovakia. She spent the remainder of her youth living and attending school in Loup County.

Keatian was born June 12, 2001 at St. Paul to Gary and Carmon Petters. His family moved near Wakefield in July of 2001.

Mr. Christensen was born Apr. 17, 1919 on a farm south of Norman to George and Emma (Paulsen) Christensen. He grew up in the Norman area and graduated from Norman High School.
On June 27, 1951 he married Doris Fry. The couple lived and farmed in the Norman area. In 1996 he retired but continued to live on the home place, where he was born. They lost their family farm home in June of 1983 when it was struck by lightning. They rebuilt on the same site.

Mr. Tucker was born Aug. 22, 1922 on a farm near Broken Bow to Floyd Franklin and Neva Eraminta Rains Tucker. In 1924 he moved to Omaha with his family and to a ranch in southern Rock County in 1927. He graduated from Rock County High School in 1939 where he earned letters in football and boxing. He entered the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1940 and later worked in defense production jobs in Omaha and Seattle.

Mr. Voorhees was born May 20, 1916 to Charles and Alma (Keep) Voorhees in the Fish Creek area east of Scotia. The family later moved to Lamartine, southeast of Scotia. He graduated from Scotia High School in 1934.

Mr. Holmes was born Mar. 6, 1918 to Benjamin Franklin and Mae Etta (Teeter) Holmes on a farm east of Arcadia where he lived his entire life. He attended Glendale School where he had a perfect attendance record for the entire eight years. He farmed all his life, first with his parents and then with his brothers, Alvin and Earl. They took pride in the polled Hereford cattle they raised.

Mr. Svoboda was born Oct. 25, 1911 in Elba to Anton and Bessie (Tuma) Svoboda. In 1918 at the age of eight, the family moved to a farm in Valley County near Ord where he received his education at the Brace Country School.
On Oct. 25, 1932 he married Margaret Walkowiak at Scotia. The couple made their home in Valley County until 1942. They then moved to the farm in Garfield County where they resided until the time of his death. He farmed his entire life and raised registered Hereford cattle for many years. He received the Nebraska Centennial Commission Tree Planting award in 1967.
Dorothy N. Lewis

Dorothy Nell Lewis, 83, of Burwell died Sun., Feb. 23, 2003 at her home.

Mrs. Lewis was born may 17, 1919 to Henry DeVerre and Henrietta Florence (Engel) Cass. The family homesteaded 11 miles north of Burwell. The death of her father constituted moving to town. She was raised and educated in Burwell, graduating with the class of 1937.
On Oct. 3, 1939 she married Martin Lewis at the First Congregational Church in Omaha. The family sent 22 years traveling the world because her husband was in the Army. Traveling and living in almost every state in the union, they also spent time in Giessen, Germany and Taiwan. Her husband retired Aug. 31, 1957. The family moved to Burwell in 1958 but that did not deter their traveling. They lived in Istanbul and Adana Turkey (Incirlik AFB). They moved back to Burwell in 1964. In 1968, after working at dress shops in Oklahoma City, San Antonio, and Norfolk, she was the bridal consultant for Brandeis in Grand Island. They opened the House of Fashion in their home in Burwell and eventually, they moved the store uptown and operated it for 10 years. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1999.

On Sept. 6, 1937 she married Roman R. "Ray" Kowalski at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. They made their home in Greeley. In 1946 he was killed in a welding explosion accident.

Upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy for four years as a builder in the Seabees. While in the Seabees, he served three tours in Vietnam. He was in DaNang in 1966 with MCB 11. He was in Chu-Lai in 1968 and in Hue Phu Bai in 1968 during the Tet Offensive.
In 1967 he married Irene Banuelos at Port Huemene, CA. In December of 1968 he was honorably discharged from military service at which time he returned to Nebraska to join the family business. In 1972 they moved back to Aurora to reside and continue raising their family. He worked for the family lumber business for 33 years.

Funeral services will be held on Thurs., Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Seventh Day Baptist Church in North Loup. Pastor Chris Mattison will officiate. Phyllis Clement will be the accompanist and Jeneane Able the vocalist. Pallbearers are Rod Van Slyke, Mark Williams, Shannon Williams, Carl Iske, Shelley Santrach, Kari Iske, Mitch Van Slyke, Kurtis Van Slyke and Jennifer Williams. Honorary pallbearers include Mike Goldfish, Bennie Sintek, Ike Babcock, Bob Whalen, Hank Markvicka, Merlyn Schudel, Emil Hrebec, Tom Wallin and Ed Whalen. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery at North Loup.
Visitation will be on Wed., Dec. 3 from 6-8 p.m. at the Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the North Loup Seventh Day Baptist Church or the Greeley Care Home. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Williams was born Nov. 13, 1909 south of North Loup to Michael and Iva (Barker) Whalen. She lived most of her early years south of North Loup in the Fussyville neighborhood. She attended Fussyville District 24 school through the tenth grade and then attended Scotia High School.
