Hannah Burns
LAUREL -- Hannah C. Burns, 91, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at Osmond General Hospital.
Services were on Tuesday at the Logan Center United Methodist Church, north of Laurel. Schumacher-Hasemann Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Burns was born on Dec. 17, 1906, on a farm north of Laurel to August and Paulina (Brewer) Pehrson. She was educated in Cedar County and graduated from Laurel High School in 1924.
She married
Raymond A. Burns on Feb. 8, 1926, at Sioux City, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Logan Center community for 60 years.
She was a member of the Logan Center United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, Duane Burns of Grand Island; one daughter, Elaine (Mrs. Marvin) Draghu of Wakefield; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Her husband in 1986. She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Anita Rae; two infant grandsons; and four brothers, John, Uris, Raymond and Roy Pehrson.
Max Berumen
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Max Berumen, 86, of Little Rock, Ark., died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at his home after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wood River. The Rev. Ray Kosmicki will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., with the rosary at 6 p.m., Monday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Berumen was born on Jan. 20, 1912, at Italy, Texas, to Maurillo and Eulalia (Ramirez) Berumen. He grew up and was educated in Lexington. Mr. Berumen was a World War II veteran.
He married
Mable Carter in 1946. They lived in Little Rock, Ark., where he owned a barber shop and worked up until the time of his illness.
He visited his Nebraska family every summer and always remained a Husker fan.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Doris Colby of Las Vegas; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and six sisters, Norma Garcia of Virginia, Dora Pedrosa of Chicago, Mary (Mrs. Raymond) Robles of Omaha and Nellie Haro, Louisa Zavala Borrego and Josephine Gallardo, all of Wood River.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Tony, Ben and George Berumen; and one sister, Lena Berumen.
Margaret Chambers
Margaret P. Chambers, 79, of Grand Island died Saturday, May 3, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Leo's Catholic Church. The Rev. Jack Rademacher will officiate. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery in York.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a rosary at 7 p.m., at St. Leo's Catholic Church.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Chambers was born Dec. 6, 1923, at Merrick County to John and Rose (Trainor) Power.
Survivors of her immediate family include her husband, Lester; two sons, Randall Chambers of Grand Island and Alan Chambers of Lincoln; three daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia Powell of Lincoln, Ann Chambers of Grand Island, and Susan and Patrick Barrett of Lincoln.
Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Jason, Matt, Adam and Ben Chambers and their mother, Sherril Whiting; Kathleen and Daniel Chapman and their father, Stan; and Amelia and Audrey Barrett.
Mrs. Chambers received her education in Merrick County. After her education, she was employed at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. She was later employed as a salesperson for J.C. Penney's and I. Magnins.
She married
Lester Chambers on May 14, 1949, in Grand Island
Mrs. Chambers was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church and the St. Leo's Altar Society.
She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Chambers; six sisters, Dolores Zmek, Dorothy Armatys, Charlotte Pierce, Agnes Clouse, Theresa Brusseau, and Phyllis Williams; and five brothers, Vincent Power, Richard Power, Robert Power, Owen Power and James Alfred Power.
Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Stroke Foundation.
Kendall Garrison
74, U.S. Navy veteran
Kendall E. Garrison, 74, of Grand Island died Sunday, May 4, 2003, at the Nebraska Veterans Home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the auditorium of the Nebraska Veterans Home. The Rev. William Forbes will officiate. Burial of the ashes will be in the Burkett Cemetery.
There will be a family gathering from 10 a.m. until service time. All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Garrison was born Sept. 6, 1928, at Lincoln to Ernest and Esther (Kendall) Garrison.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Janet, of Cedar Rapids; a daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Jim Domeier of Burwell; two stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Catherine Choyeski of Cedar Rapids and Macy and David Palensky of Glendale, Ariz.; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Lloyd and Billy Dunn of Springview, Mo.; a brother, Enos Garrison of Oregon; and a sister, Alice Amthor of Rockport, Mo.
Other survivors include grandchildren, Derrick, Andrea and Jessica Domeier, Jade Dubberly, Luke, Calen, Elle Choyeski, Gray and Cassi Palensky, Randy, Benjamin and Megan Dunn, and two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Hailey.
Mr. Garrison started his schooling in Lincoln and finished at Pillsbury Military Academy in Faribault, Minn. Following his schooling, he entered the U.S. Navy, serving from Sept. 20, 1945, to Aug. 28, 1953.
He married
Ruth Reed Hatfield on June 9, 1955, at Fort Collins. He later married
Janet M. Dunn on Nov. 10, 1984, at Grand Island.
He spent his early life working with the Rodeo Circuit, participating in both national and county rodeos. He was a shipping supervisor at Delicious Foods until retiring in 1989 due to ill health.
He was an avid Nebraska football fan, Little League coach and was a member of the American Legion.
Memorials are suggested for the hospice room at Nebraska Veterans Home.
Rita Schwieger
Rita M. Schwieger, 74, of Grand Island died Sunday, May 4, 2003, at St. Francis Skilled Care.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Francis Curran will officiate.
Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Curran Funeral Chapel.
Mrs. Schwieger was born April 19, 1929, at Merna, to Edward and Delia (Kaelin) Sweeney.
Survivors of her immediate family include her husband, Melvin; four sons and three daughter-in-laws, Allan and Chris Schwieger of Grand Island, Steve and Chris Schwieger of Phillips, Stanley and Judy Schwieger of Waco, Texas, and Clayton Schwieger of Grand Island; a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and K.C. Hehnke of Grand Island; a brother, Edwin Sweeney of Mullen; a sister and brother-in-law, Genevieve and Raymond Fraiser of Litchfield; and a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Sweeney of Grand Island.
Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Jarred, Mallory, Dex, Eric, Gina, Sarah and Hannah Schwieger, and Kaitlin Hehnke.
Rita grew up and received her education at Dale Valley in Anselmo. She completed her high school education at St. Agnes Boarding School in Alliance and graduated in 1947. She graduated from St. Francis Nursing School in January 1951.
She began working at the Grand Island Clinic and later St. Francis Medical Center as a registered nurse. She retired in 1994 after 43 years, 35 of them in the obstetrics unit. After her retirement, she volunteered at St. Francis Medical Center and assisted with the cancer support group.
She loved her children and grandchildren and collecting angels. She was an avid baseball fan and loved Husker football and playing cards.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Christian Women's Club.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Henry, Lynn, Richard and Harvey Sweeney; and a sister, Helen Davis.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Francis Medical Center Foundation.
Linda Merchen
54, Substitute teacher
Linda L. Merchen, 54, of Grand Island died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Abundant Life Christian Center. The Rev. Darcy Ready will officiate. Additional services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Butte Full Gospel Church in Butte. The Revs. Darcy Ready and Tim Hazen will officiate.
There will be no visitation. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Merchen was born Aug. 25, 1948, at Cloquet, Minn., to Ray and Grace (Southerton) Ketchum.
Survivors of the immediate family include her husband, Kenneth Merchen of South Bend; two sons, T.R. Merchen and Jon Merchen, both of Grand Island; her parents of Esko, Minn.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Collette and Ken Reynolds of Raleigh, N.C., and Beth Ketchum of Chamberlain, S.D.
Other survivors include special friends, Evelyn States of Dannebrog and Dolores Ludens of Grand Island.
Linda grew up and received her elementary education at Esko, Minn., and graduated from Esko High School in 1966. She furthered her education at Hibbing College and Bemidji State College at Bemidji, Minn., and earned her bachelor of science degree in elementary education in 1972. She was united in marriage to Kenneth R. Merchen on Dec. 31, 1971, at National City, Calif. They then made their home for a year in Springfield, S.D., a year at Littleburg, S.D., and two years at Valentine. She taught school for three years at Lakeview School, north of Crookston. In 1976, they moved to Butte. She was Boyd County's School Superintendent for several years. In 1989, they moved to Grand Island. For several years she worked as director of the YWCA Almost Home Program. She was a substitute teacher for the Grand Island Schools and several area school districts. She was also employed at Sam's Club.
She was a member of the Abundant Life Christian Center.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Charley and Elva Ketchum and John and Rhuamah Southerton.
