Ann Cortner
LOUP CITY -- Frances Ann Cortner, 64, of Loup City died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. The Rev. Reginald A. Urban will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery at Loup City.
Memorials are suggested to the Sherman County Senior Center.
Peters Funeral Home of Loup City is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Cortner was born on Feb. 13, 1934, at West Point to John L. and Lee (Haynes) Hegarty. She grew up in Loup City and attended Loup City Public Schools. She was a 1951 graduate of Loup City High School.
She married
Gary L. Cortner in 1955. The couple later moved to Chelmsford, Mass. She received her licensed practical nurse degree from Tewksbury School of Nursing in Tewksbury, Mass., in 1980. She returned to Loup City in 1984.
Her greatest achievements were being a mother and grandmother.
She was a member of St. Josaphat's Catholic Church and its Altar Society.
Survivors include one daughter, Pamela (Mrs. Michael) Gardner of Athens, Ohio; one son, Michael Cortner of Westford, Mass.; two grandsons; her stepmother, Idella Hegarty of Grand Island; two sisters, Rose (Mrs. Lou) Palmer of Omaha and Jean Rine of Beloit, Wis.; four brothers, John Hegarty Jr. and Mike Hegarty, both of Fremont, Joe Hegarty of Orlando, Fla., and David Hegarty of Waukesha, Wis.; and her former husband, Gary Cortner of Chelmsford, Mass.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Hegarty and Lee Clipston.
Teddy Glines
HASTINGS -- Teddy L. Glines, 48, of Hastings died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at Perkins Pavilion at the Good Samaritan Village.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Hastings. The Rev. John Lee Ross will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery at Grand Island.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Brand-Wilson Mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to Good Samaritan Village or the church.
Mr. Glines was born on Feb. 9, 1950, at St. Paul to Harold and Joy (Michelson) Glines. He grew up on a farm north of St. Paul and attended a county school. He had surgery at age 4 at the Mayo Clinic for a brain tumor. He picked up life as usual upon arriving home.
At the age of 16, he went through the Goodwill training program in Omaha. He returned and began work in a hospital in Grand Island, transferring supplies and patients. He moved to Hastings in the fall of 1968 to be with his parents at Good Samaritan Village.
He started new work in 1970. He was shipped square Scrubeez nonabrasive pads, which he shaped into a circular shape and packaged. The Boy Scouts and a hardware store sold his products. He started working in the village maintenance department in 1980 and was a volunteer worker around the village.
He enjoyed hunting, camping, swimming and fishing on the river with his brother, Jim.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Hastings.
Survivors include his mother, of Hastings; one sister, Patricia (Mrs. Tom) Smyithe of International Falls, Minn.; and one brother, Jimmy of Highland Ranch, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Bob McCann
ST. PAUL -- Bob L. McCann, 69, of St. Paul died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Elmwood cemetery in St. Paul.
There will be no visitation. Mr. McCann was cremated.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Paul Library Foundation or the American Legion Baseball Program.

Mr. McCann was born on Aug. 27, 1928, at Syracuse to Leo and Clara (Kunz) McCann. He attended Avoca Public Schools and was a 1945 graduate of Avoca High School.
He attended Peru State College, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Hastings College. Upon completing his education, he went to work for the federal Bureau of Reclamation.
He married
Ruth Yvonne Birginal on Dec. 15, 1951, at Broken Bow. The couple first lived in Kansas and later in South Dakota. The family moved to St. Paul in 1955. He worked as an engineer for the Nebraska Department of Roads from 1953 to 1991, when he retired due to ill health.
He loved to fish, hunt and garden and was an avid baseball supporter for Little League and legion programs.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Mikki (Mrs. Deni) Dobberstein of Lincoln, Mindy (Mrs. Bill) Saafeld of McCook and Marcie Greenwalt of Allen, Texas; four sons, Michael of Colorado Springs, Colo., Mitchell of St. Paul, Mark of Madera, Calif., and Matthew of Kearney; 12 grandchildren; and his mother, of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Iola Mieth
ROCKVILLE -- Iola F. Mieth, 88, of Rockville died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Congregational Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Doug DeNeui will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery in Ravenna.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna.
Mrs. Mieth was born on Dec. 13, 1909, in Hall County to Eugene and Lillian (Urwiller) Harris. She was educated at the Bluff Center School.
She married
Carl Mieth on Sept. 29, 1927, in Central City. The couple lived on a farm near Cairo, then moved to farms near Ravenna and Loup City before moving to a farm near Rockville in 1942. They retired and moved into Rockville in 1966.
Mrs. Mieth was a member of the Get Together Club.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Dewey Mieth of Rockville; one daughter, Shirley Lighthill of Grand Island; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Harold Harris of Ravenna.
She was preceded in death by one grandson and two brothers.
Jay Nelson
ORD -- Jay Nelson, 82, of Ord died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.
Services are pending at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Ross Slater
GIBBON -- Ross M. Slater, 86, of Gibbon died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Center in Gibbon.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Faith United Church in Gibbon. The Rev. Charles Spence will officiate. Burial will be in the Gibbon Riverside Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon.
Memorials are suggested to the church, the Gibbon Emergency Unit or the Gibbon Valley View Golf Course.
Mr. Slater was born on Aug. 9, 1911, in Minden to John and Sara (Bauer) Slater. He grew up on a farm east of Minden in the Norman area and was educated there.
He married
Lurene Johnson on Feb. 11, 1935, in Maxwell, where they lived for a short time. They moved to Lenox, Iowa, where he farmed for 17 years before moving to Gibbon in 1957. He farmed there until 1960 and then worked for the Nebraska Turkey Growers until his retirement.
He was a member of Faith United Church, the Gibbon Lions Club and Kearney Elks Lodge.
Survivors include one son, Lee of Gibbon; one daughter, JoAnn (Mrs. Ken) Knudson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; three brothers, Alan of Eldoria, Iowa, John of Central City and Ira of Blue Hill; and two sisters, Zella Fish of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Erma Brocker of Wichita Falls, Texas.
His wife died in 1991. He also was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
