Mildred Johnson
ORD -- Mildred "Millie" Faye Johnson, 74, of Ord died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ord Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart and Lung Association or to cancer research.
Mrs. Johnson was born on July 11, 1924, at Burwell to Melvin O. and Edna Belle (Jensen) Gideon. She was educated in Burwell and graduated from Burwell High School in 1942.
She married
Billy Johnson on Sept. 12, 1942, at Burwell. They lived in Burwell until 1948, when he was discharged from the service and the couple moved to California.
While in California, Mrs. Johnson worked for the Education Testing Service and was a caregiver to a cancer patient for many years. The couple moved to Ord to retire in 1987.
She enjoyed family camping trips, boating, bowling, gardening and the Internet. She was a member of the YWCA, Neighbor Sam's Trailer Club and numerous bridge clubs.
Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Sandy Movahed of Fremont, Calif., Glenda Zahradka and Paula Aguilar, both of Fairfield, Calif., and Marsha Johnson of Ord; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Melvin "Cash" Gideon of Burwell and Jack Gideon of Elyria; and two sisters, Melva Fernau of Wayne and Erma Hoover of Burwell.
Warren Mesner
CENTRAL CITY -- Warren Mesner, 74, of Central City, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.
Servies will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Lloyd Boyce will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Mesner was born Dec. 5, 1924, in Merrick County to Raymond and Erma (Marsh) Mesner. He grew up in Merrick County and attended District 19 Mead School. He then graduated from Central City High School in 1942.
Mr. Mesner married
Selma Jean McConnell on Jan. 26, 1947, in Central City. The couple farmed in the Merrick County area and moved into Central City in the spring of 1958.
After his father died, he continued to farm until the early 1980s when his health failed him. He moved into Community Care in the fall of 1996 where he lived at the time of his death.
Mr. Mesner was a member of the Central City Friends Meeting. He was involved in many areas of community service, including serving on the Central City school board for 16 years, on the Central City Volunteer Fire Department and the board of directors of the Nebraska Corn Growers Association.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Mike Mesner of Grand Island, Cliff of Central City and Howard of Medford, Ore.; four brothers, Dale of Lincoln, Neil of Central City, Philip of Victoria, British Columbia and William of Lexington, Ky.; two sisters, Elizabeth (Mrs. Louis) Lindahl of Lincoln and Helen (Mrs. Paul) Casper of Elm Creek; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Jess Wilcox
BURWELL -- Jess E. Wilcox Jr., 58, of Burwell, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Assembly of God Church in Burwell. The Rev. Mike Blatchley will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Robert Anderson
NORTH PLATTE -- Robert W. Anderson, 78, of North Platte, formerly of Grand Island, died Dec. 14, 1998, at his home.
Services were at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in North Platte. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National cemetery at Maxwell.
Mr. Anderson married
Emma Schmidt, and they lived in Grand Island, where he worked for Fairacres Dairy.
Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Westman of Kearney, Phyllis Christensen of Maxwell and Julie Duke of Papillion; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Tim.
Carolyn Danahy
LINCOLN -- Carolyn Rae Danahy, 48, of Lincoln, formerly of Broken Bow, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at her home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Cliff Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Danahy was born on Sept. 12, 1950, in Broken Bow to Harold and Leona (Graham) Hromas. She attended school in Broken Bow, graduating from Broken Bow High School in 1968.
She married
Anthony Rohde, and they lived in Eddyville. She later moved to Lincoln, where she lived for 10 years.
She had worked for the Lincoln public schools, was a temporary secretary for the state and had worked for the Department of Immigration. She had also been a hospice volunteer.
Survivors include two sons, Trent Rohde and Beau Rohde, both of Lincoln; two grandsons; her mother, Leona Hromas Mulford of Lincoln; two brothers, David Hromas of Lincoln and Steve Hromas of Hallum; and two sisters, Cindy Parker of Lincoln and Teri (Mrs. Brad) Mattox of Kearney.
She was preceded in death by one grandson and her father.
Lillian Powell
CINCINNATI -- Lillian C. Powell, 88, of Cincinnati, formerly of Ord, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at Camargo Manor in Cincinnati.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Rev. James Warner will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time Saturday at the church. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the University of Nebraska General Scholarship Fund.
Mrs. Powell was born on Sept. 2, 1910, at Elyria to Emil and Tracie (Ptacnik) Vodehnal. She graduated from Ord High School in 1927 and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority.
She married
William Edward Powell on May 25, 1936, in Stapleton. She began teaching in Elyria and later moved to Arnold. She also taught in Mississippi, Indiana and Kentucky.
Mrs. Powell was a Girl Scout and 4-H leader, enjoyed traveling and was active in church work. She was a member of St. Gertrude's Catholic Church in Cincinnati.
Her husband died on Jan. 22, 1972.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Welling of Cincinnati and Dr. Elizabeth Powell of Murray, Ky.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Emmanuel Vodehnal of Searcy, Ark.
Mary Vogel
Mary M. Vogel, 82, of Grand Island died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Don Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m., Wednesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Vogel was born on July 12, 1915, in Greeley to Joseph and Julia M. (Schley) Warner. She was educated in Greeley and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1933.
She married
Charles E. Vogel on Nov. 9, 1935, in Greeley. The couple lived in Grand Island, then lived in Greeley for a short time and returned to Grand Island. Mr. Vogel died in 1979.
Mrs. Vogel was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Blessed Sacrament Altar Society, the Catholic Daughters of America and the Third Order of St. Francis.
Survivors include five sons, John Vogel of Orvilla, Calif., Rolland Vogel and Raymond Vogel, both of Terril, Iowa, and James "Jim" Vogel and Charles Vogel, both of Lincoln; four daughters, Sister Charlene Vogel of Spalding, Judy (Mrs. Ron) Mettenbrink of Grand Island, Rosellen Vogel of North Platte and Susan (Mrs. Marx) Schutt of Grand Island; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and one sister, Gertrude Casey of Boulder, Colo.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Robert and Christopher Vogel; two daughters, Jennefer and Theresa Vogel; and three brothers, the Rev. Robert Warner, Harold Warner and Ray Warner.
