Ella Hongsermeier
Ella F. Hongsermeier, 94, of Grand Island died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at Tiffany Square Care Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Messiah Lutheran Church. The Revs. Douglas Stensby and Gretchen Diers will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Hongsermeier was born on June 9, 1903, at Doniphan to Fritz and Marie (Klein) Horst. She began her education at rural District 19 School and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1923. She worked as a secretary.
She married
William Hongsermeier on Oct. 19, 1924. The couple lived in Buffalo County. They moved to Phillips in 1928 and to Hall County in 1940. They moved in 1959 to Grand Island, where she worked for the Grand Island Electric Department. She retired in 1968. Mr. Hongsermeier died in 1983.
Mrs. Hongsermeier was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and was active in Sunday school, choir, Senior Aid, Women of ELCA, fellowship and HOPE. She was also a member of the Platt-Duetsche Ladies Society.
Survivors include two daughters, Lois Redman of Grand Island and Carol Horsford of Sterling, Colo.; three sons, Dale Hongsermeier and Earle Hongsermeier, both of Grand Island, and Roger Hongsermeier of Doniphan; 16 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son; two brothers, Ernest and William Horst; and two sisters, Edith Happold and Emma Grote.
Edmund Kershaw
SPALDING -- Edmund R. "Junior" Kershaw, 70, of Spalding died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at the Boone County Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding. The Rev. Frank H'lck will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with rosaries at 4:30 and 8 p.m., Thursday at the church. Dolce-Scheef Mortuary of Spalding is in charge of arrangements.
Gerald Klinginsmith
DODGE CITY, Kan. -- Gerald L. Klinginsmith, 66, of Dodge City, Kan., formerly of St. Paul, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Mid-Plains Hospital in Dodge City.
Services are pending with Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Kenneth Anderson
Kenneth "Dale" Anderson, 86, of Grand Island, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at the Tiffany Square Care Center of Grand Island.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church's Gollaher Chapel. The Rev. Delvin Roper will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Anderson was born Oct. 1, 1911, at Ulysses to Paige and Stella Mae (Davis) Anderson. He received his education at country schools and graduated from Ulysses High School in 1931.
He married
Mildred Heins on June 3, 1933, in Garrison. Mr. Anderson began farming in 1933. He farmed for 40 years in Butler, Howard and Hall counties.
In 1967 he moved to Grand Island where he worked with farm equipment as a parts man. In 1975 he moved to Sargent where he purchased an International Harvestor business. He then moved to Ainsworth and purchased and ran the John Deere Implement business with his two sons, Don and Ken.
He retired in 1985 and moved back to Grand Island. Due to failing health in 1993, he stayed at Riverside Lodge. He lived the last four years at Community Care Center in Grand Island prior to moving to Tiffany Square Care Center.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a 4-H leader and a past member of the Platt-Duetsche Society.
Survivors include his wife; five sons, Norman of Phoenix, Ariz., Allan of Sidney, Darrel of Grand Island, Don of Des Moines, Iowa and Ken of North Platte; one daughter, Marlis (Mrs. Tom) Key of Casper, Wyo.; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mable Knutsen of Portland, Ore.; and one brother, Burdette Anderson of Seattle, Wash.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Garry and Merle Dean; two brothers; and one sister.
DeWayne Broadstone
DeWayne K. Broadstone, 71, of Grand Island died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Graveside services were Thursday at Evergreen cemetery in Hot Springs, S.D., with the Rev. Steve Sandford officiating.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, S.D., was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include one sister, Patricia Summers of Grand Island.
Viva Engel
Viva M. Engel, 91, of Grand Island died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at Tiffany Square Care Center.

ALBION -- Dorothea I. Burke, 89, of Albion died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion.

MERNA -- Minnie Eng, 83, of Merna, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Center at Callaway.

LaVern Gross
BURWELL -- LaVern G. "Curly" Gross, 75, of Burwell died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Burwell. The Rev. Greg Volzke will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the Ericson Volunteer Fire Department, Burwell Ambulance Supply Fund or St. John's Noah's Ark Christian Preschool.
Mr. Gross was born on Feb. 22, 1922, in Sweetwater to Ludwig and Agnes (Psota) Gross.
He married
Arlyn Brockman on Aug. 22, 1954. They were later divorced.
He lived in Ord, Ericson and Bartlett before moving to Burwell in 1990.
He loved horses and was a farrier. He enjoyed rodeos, horse shows and livestock auctions. He was a veteran and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include two daughters, Renaye Renner of Burwell and Rhonda (Mrs. Joel) Maxson of Burwell; two sons, Randy Gross of Burwell and Ron Gross of Ericson; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Dean Gross of Ord and Eugene Gross of Burwell; and five sisters, Marie Sok of Grand Island, Louise Rassette of Ord, Mildred Jonas of Jerome, Idaho, Doris Dlugosh of Seattle and Clara (Mrs. Norris) Jones of Ord.
