Amanda Runge
ST. PAUL -- Amanda Marie Runge, 86, of Heritage Living Center at St. Paul, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Kleine Funeral Home. The Rev. Joel Schr'der will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested at the donor's choice.
Mrs. Runge was born July 9, 1911, at rural Cairo to Fritz and Mary (Witt) Runge. She grew up and received her education at Cameron Dist. 14. After her schooling she lived and helped on the family farm while caring for her mother who died in 1950.
She and her brother Elmer moved to a farm west of Grand Island in 1954. She retired in 1973 and moved to town.
She was a member of the Lutheran faith. She liked farming, gardening and cooking and baking.
Survivors include one son, Darold of Monte Vista, Colo.; two daughters, JoAnn (Mrs. Aaron) Jerabek of Farwell and Sandra (Mrs. Kenneth) Martin of Grand Island; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
Orie Stack
CHAPMAN -- Orie E. Stack, 89, of Chapman died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services are pending at Kleine Funeral Home.
John Stanger
SCOTIA -- John Stanger, 93, of Scotia, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services are pending at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Mark Syslo
OMAHA -- Mark J. Syslo, 50, of Omaha was found dead in his home on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Krakow with the Rev. Robert Nienaber officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation was Thursday at Anson Funeral Home in Genoa.
Mr. Syslo was born on Nov. 20, 1947, in Genoa to Henry A. "Hank" and Virginia (Czarnick) Syslo. He attended District 25 grade school, then graduated from Fullerton High School in 1965.
He served in the Navy as an electronics technician from August 1965 to August 1968 and was stationed in California. He then returned to Omaha, where he was a longtime resident. He liked fishing and the outdoors.
Survivors include his mother, Virginia, of Columbus; and one sister, Stephanie Syslo of Cheverly, Md.
He was preceded in death by his father on July 24, 1995.
Gilbert Taylor
NEWMAN GROVE -- Gilbert Edmond Taylor, 92, of Newman Grove, formerly of Albion, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home in Newman Grove.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Albion. The Rev. Timothy Stahl will officiate. Burial will be in the Fairview cemetery in rural Clearwater.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Albion.
Mr. Taylor was born June 15, 1905, on the family farm in Wheeler County to Ernest and Sarah (Thompson) Taylor. He received his education at Bartlett.
On Nov. 14, 1927, he married
Nettie Luella Moore at Julesburg, Colo. They lived and farmed in Antelope County. In 1954 they moved to Clearwater where they owned and operated the gas station and mechanic shop.
He was a part-time minister for 22 years. In 1977 the Taylors moved to Albion. Mrs. Taylor died in August of 1979. He lived at the Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home in Newman Grove since October 1996.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Albion.
Survivors include one son, Donald Taylor of Albion; a stepdaughter, Adelia (Mrs. John) Price Sr. of Lincoln; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; many great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Sherman Taylor.
Besides his wife he was preceded in death by five sisters, five brothers, one infant son, one infant daughter, one infant granddaughter and one infant great-granddaughter.
William Twehous
LEXINGTON -- William B. Twehous, 72, of Lexington, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, in an Omaha hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann's Catholic Church at Lexington.
Visitation and rosary will be at the Reynolds/Love Funeral Home in Lexington.
Mr. Twehous was born Aug. 31, 1925, at Stanton. He graduated from West Point High School.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving 14 months overseas.
He married
Patricia Vogel on Oct. 8, 1953, at Grand Island. They farmed in the Aurora area before moving to Lexington in 1963 where he worked for Walnut Grove Feeds and Nature's Fertilizer.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald of Grand Island and Richard of Omaha; three daughters, Bonnie Lauby of Lexington, Vicki Feely of Colorado and Sherri Steiger of Omaha; 12 grandchildren; four brothers, Virgil of St. Paul, Ray of Texas and Gene and Omer of Colorado; and one sister, Rose of Omaha.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Kathleen Hendrickson
Kathleen E. Hendrickson, 77, of Lakeview Nursing Center died Friday, May 8, 1998, at the nursing center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with the Rev. Marty Egging officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. A scripture/wake service will be held at 7 p.m. at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Hendrickson was born on Jan. 26, 1921, at David City to William and Kathleen (Laird) McConnell. She graduated from Superior High School in 1939 and attended a year of college before her marriage to Bill Hendrickson at Grand Island.
They made their home in Omaha and later came to Grand Island. She worked as a taxi driver for 12 years and then worked as a dispatcher for the Grand Island City Cab Co. for 15 years.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and served as Hall County chairwoman of the Nebraska Polio Survivors Association for 10 years.
Survivors include one son, Jerry Hendrickson of Grand Island; three daughters, Jeanie Cooper, Judy Whitecalf and Nancy Schaff, all of Grand Island; 24 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Larry Garrison; one grandson, Jerry Hendrickson; and a special friend, Albert Fogh.
George Hird
George McDonald Hird, 80, of Grand Island died Saturday, May 9, 1998, at the Greater Nebraska Health Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Richard M. Bacon officiating. Burial will be in the Ft. McPherson National cemetery in Maxwell at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mr. Hird was born on May 29, 1917, to Herbert Shaw and Sophia (Semper) Hird at Spillsby, Lincolnshire, England. At age 4, he moved with his family to Seneca where he graduated from high school in 1935. He continued his education at the University of Omaha.
On Oct. 15, 1941, he was inducted into the service, joining the 1st Armored Division, which was in the Italian, European, African and Middle Eastern Theater. His 16th Armored Engineer Battalion group was made up of bridge builders and mine layers. As a sergeant in the U.S. Army, he earned a Purple Heart and two Battle Stars for his efforts during World War II, serving in the Tunisian and Italian campaigns, and also in Ireland and England. He was wounded by shell fragments on June 9, 1944, north of Rome. He was discharged from the Army in June 1945.
He married
Maxine Dietrich in Smith Center, Kan., on June 2, 1946. He worked in construction in the Marine Center and then Chicago Lumber prior to working for the Geer Company and for DeVille Homes. For most of his life, he was a self-employed contractor in the construction business. He retired in 1983.
He was a member of the Congregational Church and he attended the First Christian Church. He was also a member of the First Armor Division VFW and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed woodworking, from making dollhouses to building additions to homes.
Survivors include his wife of Grand Island; three sons, Roger Hird of Apple Valley, Minn., Gregory Hird of Chandler, Ariz., and Ron Hird of Grand Island; two daughters, Cheryl (Mrs. Ervin) Hansen and Teri Schimonitz, both of Grand Island; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Margaret (Mrs. John) Hanks of Burwell.
