Norma McMullen
Lexington -- Norma "Jean" McMullen, 67, of Johnson's Lake near Lexington died Thursday, June 18, 1998, at Aurora, Colo.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 9 p.m., Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Survivors include two sons, Dave McMullen of Grand Island and Ron McMullen of Aurora, Colo.; a daughter, Pamela (Mrs. Richard) Clark of Sterling, Colo.; six grandchildren; a brother, Jerry Ramsey of Seattle; and five sisters, Pat (Mrs. Wayne) Ivey of Phoenix, Mary (Mrs. Tom) Talbot of Fort Worth, Texas, Betty (Mrs. William) Wilson of Everett, Wash., Peggy (Mrs. Jerry) Keenan of Lomita, Calif., and Sheryl (Mrs. Vaughn) Trueman of Evansdale, Iowa.
Her husband, Wally, died in 1991. She also was preceded in death by and a brother, Robert.
Ella Powell
RAVENNA -- Ella Powell, 94, of Ravenna died Thursday, June 18, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Congregational Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Doug DeNeui will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery in Ravenna.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the Good Samaritan Center.
Mrs. Powell was born on March 21, 1904, near Crab Orchard to Albert and Anna (Svoboda) Dienstbier. She was educated in Virginia, Neb., and Beatrice schools.
She married
Louis Powell on June 2, 1924, in Kearney. The couple lived in Ravenna. They lived in Lincoln from 1967 to 1973 and then returned to Ravenna.
She attended the Omaha School of Floral Design and opened the first floral shop in Ravenna. She remodeled nine homes in Ravenna and did most of the work herself.
Mrs. Powell was a member of the Congregational Church in Ravenna and the women's fellowship of the church, past president of the Ravenna Women's Club, a member of the Buffalo County Women's Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. She received the Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Award in 1979.
Survivors include two sons, Vern Powell of Sun City, Ariz., and William Powell of Prescott, Ariz.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one brother, Frank Dienstbier of Beatrice.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers.
'Don' Supencheck
LINCOLN -- Gary Donald "Don" Supencheck, 33, of Lincoln died Friday, June 19, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney of injuries suffered in a pickup accident near Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Don Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Mr. Supencheck was born on Jan. 9, 1965, in Grand Island to Gary L. and Roberta (Sharman) Supencheck. He grew up in Grand Island, attending Howard Elementary School, Westridge Middle School and graduating from Northwest High School in 1983.
He attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He graduated from the Nancy Bounds School of Modeling and enjoyed modeling for department stores.
He was a tile setter for Ziller Tile and most recently was self-employed in the carpet and tile business.
He served in the U.S. Army Reserve for a number of years. He liked to hunt and fish and was an amateur artist.
Survivors include a son, Tristan Dade Reutzel of Lincoln; his mother and stepfather, Roberta and Terry Kucera of Grand Island; his father, Gary Supencheck of Reno, Nev.; three brothers, Kerry, Russell and Rob, all of Grand Island; and one sister, Shelly Sok of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Richard and Mildred Sharman; and paternal grandparents, Albert and Virginia Supencheck.
Kenneth Pugh
Kenneth D. Pugh, 53, of 1621 N. Elm died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Kleine Funeral Home.
'Wes' Beck
MARQUETTE -- Wesley "Wes" John Beck, 75, of Marquette died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Charles Pollard will officiate. Burial will be in Bureau (Pierce Chapel) Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mr. Beck was born on Sept. 27, 1923, in Clarks to Raymond and Ruth (Wolfe) Beck. He grew up in the Central City and Clarks area and attended District 25 School. He graduated from Central City High School in 1942. He then enlisted in the Army and served in World War II.
He returned to the area and married
Shirley Mae Rogers. He farmed while doing iron work and driving a school bus for Central City and Marquette. He continued farming and raising livestock up to the time of his death.
Mr. Beck was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Platte Valley Wranglers Saddle Club, Lone Tree Rodeo Association, American Legion Post 6 and Aurora Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4993. He enjoyed his cattle, raccoon hunting, horses and trail riding.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Wes Jr. and Dan, both of Central City; one daughter, Kathy (Mrs. Jerry) Kuck of Central City; 11 grandchildren; and five brothers, Dale of Silver Creek, Roger and Phil, both of Central City and Deryel and Robert, both of Clarks.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Doris Neel.
Helen Elliott
SHELTON -- Helen Elliott, 74, of Shelton died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Gibbon, where she had lived since Feb. 3.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Shelton United Methodist Church. The Revs. Charles Spence and Peter Chang will officiate. Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Funeral Home in Kearney. Further visitation will be before services Tuesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Shelton United Methodist Church, Haven's Chapel United Methodist Church or the Good Samaritan Hospital Hospice Program.
Mrs. Elliott was born on Oct. 17, 1924, in Eddyville to Marion and Nellie (Lahm) Marshall. She graduated from Eddyville High School in 1942 and received her teaching certificate from Kearney State Teachers College. She taught in rural schools south of Eddyville before she was married
and for a short time in Eddyville during World War II.
She married
Lorin L. Elliott on Feb. 4, 1945, in Eddyville. They lived in the Haven's Chapel area north of Kearney until moving to Shelton 10 years ago. She was the cook at Pleasant Hill School from 1961 until retiring in 1971.
She was a member of Haven's Chapel United Methodist Church and attended Shelton United Methodist Church. She was a Sunday school and Bible school teacher for many years in Eddyville and at Haven's Chapel. She also belonged to the United Methodist Women and Our Afternoon Off Extension Club in Kearney.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Terry and Gary, both of Kearney; six grandchildren; two brothers, Maurice of Mojave Desert, Ariz., and Bill of McCook; five sisters, Doris Elliott of Lexington, Arlene Peterson and Betty Hagan, both of Kearney, Bonnie Myers of Callaway and Lois Leach of Loveland, Colo.
She was preceded in death by three brothers.
Leonard Shively
KEARNEY -- Leonard L. Shively, 85, of Kearney died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. The Rev. Charles Torpey will officiate. Burial will be in the Kearney cemetery with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 759, American Legion Post 52 and the Kearney National Guard unit.
O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Shively was born on Sept. 12, 1913, at Thedford to William and Maude (Jameson) Shively. He grew up and attended school at Sargent.
He entered the U.S. Army on Jan. 31, 1942, and served in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Purple Heart cluster and spent a year and a half at Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver. He was discharged on Dec. 7, 1946.
He married
Lydia Ptacnik on June 1, 1997, in Kearney. He was a self-employed carpenter. He also worked as a foreman at Baldwin Manufacturing from 1967 to 1982, when he retired.
He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and the VFW.
Survivors include his wife; one stepson, Lanny Weverka of Sargent; two stepdaughters, Kay Hoppes of Burwell and Vikki Hoppes of Leigh; five step grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; and one sister, Wilma Johnson of Ohio.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Nona Gibson and Irene Young.
