U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

'Toni' Maiefski

LOUP CITY -- Antoinette "Toni" Maiefski, 94, of Loup City died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. The Rev. Reginald Urban will officiate. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Island.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m., with a 4 p.m. sodality rosary, Thursday at Peters Funeral Home in Loup City.

Visitation will continue from 6 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. vigil service, Thursday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Rose Lane Home.

Grace Rice

ORD -- Grace Gertrude Rice, 102, of Ord died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Ord Christian Church. The Rev. Michael Chase will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ord Memorial Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Mrs. Rice was born on March 23, 1896, in Springdale Township in Valley County to W.H. and Nancy E. (Timmerman) Cronk. She attended Plain Valley School until the eighth grade.

She married Herman Rice on Oct. 28, 1914, at her parents' home in Valley County. She wrote many poems, including "A Policeman's Wife." Mr. Rice died on Aug. 17, 1963.

Mrs. Rice moved to the NoLo Villa at North Loup in July 1978. She continued to live on her own, cooking and cleaning for herself, until December 1995, when she entered the Valley County Nursing Home.

Survivors include two sons, Walter Hubert Rice and Harwood L. Rice, both of North Loup; 10 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Velma Meese of Ord.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Robert; one infant daughter, Lena; two great-grandsons; five sisters; and three brothers.

Ivan Sundberg

STROMSBURG -- Ivan D. Sundberg, 91, of Stromsburg died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at the York General Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stromsburg. The Rev. Robert Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in the York Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.

Joanne Flory

FREMONT -- Joanne Flory, 79, of Fremont died Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, at the Fremont Area Medical Center.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lattin-Dugan-Chambers Funeral Home. Mrs. Flory was cremated.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials are suggested to St. James Episcopal Church and the Epply Cancer Center.

Mrs. Flory was born on July 9, 1919, at Lincoln to Mr. and Mrs. O.A. Beltzer. As a child, she moved to Grand Island with her family. She grew up in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island High School in 1937.

She attended Lindenwood College at St. Charles, Mo., for two years and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1941. She received her master's degree in secondary education in 1942.

She married Robert L. Flory on Oct. 21, 1944, at Grand Island. She taught at Mitchell High School and Scotts Bluff Junior College before moving to Fremont in 1946. Mr. Flory died on Oct. 3, 1998.

Survivors include one daughter, Anne Flory (Mrs. Tim Osterloh) of Wheat Ridge, Colo.; one son, William Flory of Lincoln; and three grandchildren.

Herbert Lindquist

HOLDREGE -- Herbert E. Lindquist, 87, of Holdrege died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at the Methodist Memorial Home in Holdrege.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Emmaus Evangelical Free Church in Funk. The Revs. Reynold Jackson and Hollis Starr will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Home cemetery at Holdrege.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Nelson-Harris Funeral Home in Holdrege.

Mr. Lindquist was born on Dec. 29, 1910, southwest of Minden to Oscar and Thilda (Sherman) Lindquist. His family moved to a farm north of Funk. He graduated from Holdrege High School in 1927 and then farmed north of Funk with his brother Elmer.

He married Mildred Evelyn Nelson of Funk on April 25, 1934. They moved into Holdrege in 1974.

He was a member of Emmaus Evangelical Free Church and served as Sunday school superintendent, chairman and treasurer. He was a past board member of rural District 26 School.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Evelyn (Mrs. Hollis) Starr of O'Fallon, Mo., and Theone (Mrs. Harold) H'ksema of Grand Island; seven grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Beverly Ann Lindquist; one great-grandson; two brothers, Arthur Lindquist and Elmer Lindquist; and one sister, Myrtle Nelson.

Harold Emery

OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- Harold Emery, 58, of Oceanside, Calif., formerly of Grand Island, died Oct. 4, 1998, at Oceanside.

Services were on Thursday at Court of Faith Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside.

Mr. Emery was born on May 24, 1940, at Grand Island to Rapheal and Esther Emery.

For the past 15 years, he lived and worked in Oceanside, Calif.

Survivors include his wife, Donna; one son, Scott of California; two daughters, Stacy and Shannon, both of California; four grandchildren; two brothers, Ronald M. Emery of Grand Island and Eugene Emery of Texas; and one sister, Racheal Meyer of Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Leo Emery.

Marion Doak

SEBRING, Fla. -- Marion D. Doak, 54, of Sebring, Fla., died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, of cancer.

Mr. Doak was cremated. Private graveside services will be at a later date.

Memorials are suggested to the family at 1872 22nd Ave., Columbus.

Mr. Doak was born on July 19, 1944, to John and Frances (Graham) Doak of Benedict. He graduated from Stromsburg High School in 1962.

He entered the Army in 1965 and served two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded two Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts and the Air Medal.

He married Doris Freeland on June 25, 1988, in Grand Island. They lived in Grand Island until September 1997, when they moved to Florida.

Survivors include his wife; two stepsons, Duane Hablitzel of York and Mark Hablitzel of Gallatin Gateway, Mont.; three stepdaughters, Jeannette (Mrs. Richard) Rieken of Clarks, Kris (Mrs. Robert) Girardin of Columbus and Terri (Mrs. Don) Kostal of Odell; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and seven sisters, Joan (Mrs. Ed) Frohner of Omaha, Helen Jinright of Naples, Fla., Dorothy Doak of Lincoln, Evelyn Lewis of York, Barbara Gregory of Clarinda, Iowa, Margaret (Mrs. Gerald) Rossow of Plattsmouth and Kathryn (Mrs. LeRoy) Vanicek of York.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
