U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Roy Wood

Roy O. Wood, 53, of Grand Island died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Vernon Werner will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Wood was born on June 5, 1944, at Yakima, Wash., to Eugene and Marie (Forrer) Wood. He grew up living in many different locations as his family followed various military assignments.

He graduated from high school in Germany. He served in the U.S. Army Rangers from December 1963 until August 1968. He attended college in Kansas. He then moved to New Orleans and traveled the United States as a truck driver.

He enjoyed the Cajun culture in the New Orleans area.

He married Beverly "Jean" Austin on June 12, 1995, at Salt Lake City, Utah. They moved to Grand Island last April.

He was a member of the Roman Catholic faith and was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife; his mother and stepfather, Marie and Ed Yeager of Mulvane, Kan.; a sister, Colleen Westling of El Paso, Texas; two brothers, Doug Yeager of Springfield, Mo., and Gary Yeager of Derby, Kan.; two stepdaughters, Cindy (Mrs. Robert) Bennett of Kearney and Debra Austin of Ogden, Utah; a stepson, Danny Austin of Kearney; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Wood; and grandfather, Ollie Forrer.

Shirley Adamson

FULLERTON -- Shirley B. Adamson, 88, of Fullerton died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at the Fullerton Manor.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Palmer's Funeral Home. The Rev. Roy Cupples will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Adamson was born July 10, 1909, on a farm near Spalding to Harry and Pearl (West) Stevens. She attended rural school in the Timber Creek area near Belgrade.

She married William E. Adamson on Dec. 23, 1926. The lived in Fullerton, where he was a car dealer and she was a housewife.

She enjoyed gardening and flowers.

Survivors include two sons, William of Fullerton and Richard of Kearney; two sisters, Hazel (Mrs. Derwin) White and Leone (Mrs. Gilbert) Babcock, both of North Loup; one brother, Glen Stevens of Garden Grove, Calif.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.

'Jack' Barth

PALMER -- Lester "Jack" Fred Barth, 84, of Palmer died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Greenway-Palmer Funeral Home in Palmer. The Rev. Delbert King will officiate. Burial will be in the Rosehill cemetery in Palmer.

Visitation will be from noon to service time on Monday.

Mr. Barth was born Dec. 4, 1913, in rural Chapman to Charles J. and Cecil (McPherson) Barth. The family moved to Palmer, where he grew up and attended school.

He married Edythe Butler on March 20, 1937, in Grand Island. They lived in Palmer, where he farmed and worked as a mechanic and welder. The couple moved to Elba in January 1994 to be near their daughter.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include one daughter, Connie Coxbill of Elba; one sister, Pearl Barth of Anderson, Mo.; one brother, Howard of Ontario, Calif.; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife; an infant daughter; and two sisters, Esther Husman and Opal Burkman.

Marion Burns

LOUP CITY -- Marion D. Burns, 88, of Loup City died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at his home.

There will be no services. Mr. Burns was cremated. Burial will be at a later date in the Arcadia City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Loup City EMTs. Peters Funeral Home of Loup City is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Burns was born July 17, 1909, to Judson and Emma (Harpster) Burns in the Washington Township of Sherman County near Arcadia. He received his education in rural schools and was a 1928 graduate of Arcadia High School. Upon completing his education, he farmed with his parents.

He married Dorothy M. Woody on Dec. 12, 1931, in Ord. The couple farmed near Arcadia until their retirement in 1976 when they moved to Loup City. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and gardening.

He is survived by his wife of Loup City, two daughters, Terri Winter of Miller and Joellen (Mrs. Marvin) Hunt of Lexington; one son, Jerry Burns of Mukelteo, Wash.; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three grandchildren; two sisters, Cora Smith and Hazel Dean; and three brothers, Glen, Hayden and Dale.

Peter Graus

ST. PAUL -- Peter W. Graus, 82, of St. Paul died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at Community Care of America in Palmer.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Rosalie Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Elmwood cemetery in St. Paul.

Visitation will be Sunday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Howard County Historical Society.

Mr. Graus was born Oct. 29, 1915, near Elba to Mike and Helen (Szwanek) Graus. At an early age, he moved with his family to a farm northwest of St. Paul. He attended District 2 School near St. Paul, and then St. Paul Business College.

After his schooling, he helped on the family farm and later farmed on his own. He also worked for the Rural Electrification Association (REA) during its construction. He was then self-employed doing electrical work, carpentry and plumbing work around St. Paul.

He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include two brothers, Henry of Columbus and Laverne of Grand Island; three sisters, Betty (Mrs. Ed) Becker and Dorothy Graus, both of Grand Island, and Isabelle (Mrs. Doug) Nielsen of Cheyenee, Wyo.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Benny, Frank and Ed; and one sister, Kathryn Cochenour.

Lawrence Hoffman

HAMPTON -- Lawrence Hoffman, 81, formerly of Hampton, died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, in a Fairmont care home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hampton. The Rev. George Damm will officiate. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Church cemetery in Polk.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.

Mr. Hoffman was born Dec. 13, 1915, in Bradshaw to Julius and Anna (Stindt) Hoffman. He grew up in the Polk area.

He married Martha Meerkatz on Jan. 28, 1937, in Hamilton County. The couple began farming near Benedict and later farmed south of Polk for most of their married life.

After retirement, they moved into Hampton. For the past few years, he has lived at the Fairview Manor in Fairmont.

Mr. Hoffman was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church west of Polk, where he served as a trustee. He had also served on the school board.

At the time of his death, he was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hampton.

He enjoyed gardening, bowling, fishing and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Larry of Hampton; two grandchildren; and one brother, Leonard of Benedict.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Martin, Walter and Orville.
