Patricia Zaruba
FULLERTON -- Patricia A. Zaruba, 79, of Fullerton died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at her son's home in Albion.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fullerton. The Rev. Don Cleary will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service, Thursday at Palmer's Funeral Home in Fullerton.
Mrs. Zaruba was born on April 19, 1919, at Bradish to Julius L. and Emma M. (DeWulf) Wlaschin. She attended District 42 School near Albion and graduated from Cedar Rapids High School in 1937.
She married
Edward Zaruba on Dec. 27, 1945, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Primrose. They lived in Fullerton.
Mrs. Zaruba taught school until 1947 and then worked for the Fullerton Water and Sewer Department until 1976. She then was a house mother at Hastings College until her retirement in 1986.
Mr. Zaruba died on Dec. 10, 1966.
Mrs. Zaruba was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, St. Ann's Altar Society and the St. Edward Dance Club. She enjoyed sewing and dancing.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Zaruba of Julesburg, Colo., and Patrick Zaruba of Albion; three daughters, Theresa (Mrs. Ted) Weiser of North Bend, Lorraine (Mrs. Alan) Iverson of Broken Bow and Louise Schenk of Fullerton; two stepsons, Carroll Zaruba of Fullerton and Gary Zaruba of Kearney; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three step grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph Wlaschin of Scottsbluff and Ambrose Wlaschin of Cedar Rapids; and four sisters, Margaret Liekhus and Edith Wlaschin, both of Cedar Rapids, Rita Zaruba of Belgrade and Delores Gilliam of San Diego.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Kristina; three brothers, Leo, Charles and Bernard; and one sister, Mary Klassen.
'J.J.' Maire
MULLEN -- John Jack "J.J." Maire, 85, of Mullen died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in North Platte.
Services will be at 11 a.m. MDT Saturday at the Assembly of God Church in Mullen. The Rev. Darrell E. Schmid will officiate. Burial will be in Cedarview cemetery at Mullen.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. MDT Friday at the Mullen Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Mullen Rescue Unit or the church.
Mr. Maire was born on Feb. 18, 1913, in Mullen to August and Nancy (Clardy) Maire. He spent most of his life in the Mullen area and owned and operated a livestock trucking firm. He also drove a school bus for more than 40 years.
He married
Mildred Romell on Nov. 3, 1933, at Brewster. After his retirement, he spent his time helping his wife with a rural mail route.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Peggy (Mrs. Carl) Simonson of Hordville; three sons, John of Coca, Fla., Robert of Plymouth and Jim of Rushville; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Vera; and one brother, Elton.
Robert Thurston
Robert L. Thurston, 77, of Grand Island, formerly of Shelton, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Shelton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Charles Spence will officiate. Burial will be in the Gibbon Riverside Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon/Shelton is in charge of arrangements.
Logan Klute
HAMPTON - Logan James Klute, 4 months, of Hampton died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at Aurora Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Darryl Keeney will officiate. Burial will be in the Chapman Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Logan was born on July 14, 1998, in Central City to Scott A. and Angela M. (Kortum) Klute.
Survivors include his parents, of Hampton; one sister, Kaylee Ann of Hampton; grandparents, Larry and Carolyn Klute of Hampton and Russ and Julia Kortum of Clarks; great-grandparents, Howard and Anita Cox of Hordville, Robert P. and Zelma D. Scott of Anselmo and Dorothy Klute of Hot Springs Village, Ark.
He was preceded in death by great-grandparents, Jim and Margaret Kortum, Edgar Klute and Henry Kisler.
George Pirnie
BROKEN BOW - George R. Pirnie, 88, of Broken Bow died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Charles Gregory will officiate. Burial will be in Lone Tree cemetery at Weissert.
Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church at Broken Bow.
Mr. Pirnie was born on May 11, 1910, at Weissert to Earl A. and Alvina (Roy) Pirnie. He grew up in the Weissert area and was educated at the East Weissert School.
He and his brothers started Pirnie Brothers Trucking. They later expanded into Arrow Freight Lines, with truck terminals in Broken Bow, Grand Island, Omaha, Alliance, Hastings and Lincoln. They also owned and operated several grain elevators and went into farming and ranching.
He married
Marie I. Peterson on Nov. 13, 1954. They lived in Broken Bow.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Broken Bow.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, George Jr. and Gerald, both of Broken Bow; one daughter, Nadine (Mrs. Rod) Schweitzer of Broken Bow; two grandsons; and one brother, Don of Kearney.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, Kenneth, Frank, James, Roy, Robert and John.
Max Bennett
LINCOLN - Vernon Max Bennett, 71, of Lincoln, formerly of Loup City, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at Lincoln General Hospital.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City. The Rev. Heidi Revelo will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery at Loup City with military honors by Loup City American Legion Post 48.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Bennett was born on Feb. 22, 1927, at Loup City to Paul and Hazel (Ziegler) Bennett. He attended Loup City public schools and worked for Romans Trucking Co. until his induction into the U.S. Army in 1945.
His military service included an assignment in Japan. He was discharged on Dec. 5, 1946, and re-entered the trucking business as a cross-country driver.
He worked for Buckingham and Ringsby Trucking Co. and ended his career in 1992 with Consolidated Trucking. He lived in Cheyenne, Wyo.; Rapid City, S.D.; Hershey and Lincoln. Mrs. Bennett died in 1995.
Mr. Bennett enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting and boating.
Survivors include two sisters, Mildred Bush of Amsterdam, N.Y., and Shirley Weddel of Denver; and one brother, Merl Bennett of Bismarck, N.D.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Joan Fox and Pat Schlattmann.
