Jerald Allen
GLENDALE, Ariz. - Jerald John Allen, 54, of Glendale, Ariz., formerly of Hastings, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Chapel in Hastings. The Rev. James Meysenburg will officiate. Burial will be in Parkview cemetery at Hastings.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m., with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home. Further visitation will be from 8 a.m. to service time Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Valley-Phoenix.
Mr. Allen was born on Aug. 25, 1944, in Beatrice to John F. and Geraldine M. (Shank) Allen. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1962.
He lived in Hastings, Grand Island and Omaha before moving to Arizona 15 years ago.
He married
Connie Murphy on Sept. 29, 1995, in Omaha. He was a salesman for a truck accessory manufacturing company.
He was a member of St. Helen's Catholic Church in Glendale, Ariz.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Shaun Eric of Telluride, Colo., and Jerod John of Phoenix; one daughter, Arielle Marie of Tulsa, Okla.; two stepsons, Gregor D. Katzberg of Grand Island and Michael A. Katzberg of Phoenix; one stepdaughter, Kristi Wilson of Hastings; six grandchildren; his parents, of Peoria, Ariz.; one sister, Jonadyne Carpenter of Grand Island; and one brother, Steven J. of Grand Island.
Kermit Dowse
MILTON-FREEWATER, Ore. - Kermit A. Dowse, 79, of Milton-Freewater, Ore., formerly of Comstock, died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, at the Walla Walla General Hospital in Oregon.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Douglas Grove cemetery in Comstock. The Rev. Marty Robbins will officiate.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the Stateline Baptist Church in Milton-Freewater.
Rhoad Funeral Home of Sargent is in charge of arrangements.
'Patty' Vejvoda
Patricia "Patty" M. Vejvoda, 54, of 627 E. MacArthur Ave. died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident near St. Libory.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Revs. Don Larmore, Marty Egging and Jack Rademacher will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday at Kleine Funeral Home.
Further visitation will be from 6 p.m. until the Scripture wake and rosary service at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Vejvoda was born on Dec. 11, 1943, at Grand Island to Sylvester and Mary (Powell) Placke. She grew up on the family farm near St. Libory. She attended Catholic school in St. Libory before coming to Grand Island Central Catholic and graduating in 1961.
She worked in the medical records department at St. Francis Hospital before marrying Gary Vejvoda on June 29, 1963, in Grand Island. She worked for the Floret Flower Shop for many years.
She and her husband bought Meyers Jewelry Store at 121 W. Third. She helped her husband as office manager of Heartland Insurance and shared the office with her business, Art-N-Bloom.
She was active in St. Leo's Catholic Church. She also attended services at Blessed Sacrament. She was a member of an extension club, the YMCA and Catholic Daughters. She was serving as secretary of the International Training in Communication local chapter, known as Skill Builders for Success.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Patrick of Omaha and Joseph "Joe" of Ashland; two daughters, Sonya (Mrs. Michael) Vetick of Kearney and Lisa (Mrs. Brian) Parizek of Norfolk; five grandchildren; one brother, Robert Placke of Kearney; and her mother, of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her father. Her sister, Kathleen, also died in the auto accident Wednesday.
Barbara Lanum
BROKEN BOW -- Barbara M. Lanum, 94, of Broken Bow, formerly of Ansley, died Thursday, April 30, 1998, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Ansley. The Rev. J. Green will officiate. Burial will be in the Ansley Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Lanum was born on Feb. 15, 1904, near Ansley to William F. and Mary (Jelinek) Davis. She graduated from Ansley High School in 1922 and later taught school near Brewster and Ansley.
She married
David Lanum on May 20, 1925, at Ansley. They lived in Ansley for 10 years and then lived in California for 30 years. She worked as a welder in the shipyards in California during World War II. She also worked at a Del Monte peach cannery.
They later moved to Idaho, where they lived for 10 years. They moved back to Ansley in 1977 and moved to Broken Bow in August 1994. Mr. Lanum died on Feb. 18, 1995.
Mrs. Lanum was a member of the United Methodist Church for 72 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Ansley Rotary Club, an extension club and Foresters. She taught Sunday school and was active on election boards. She loved gardening, sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting, playing cards and reading.
Survivors include one sister, Hazel Gehrt of Ansley.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Ann Volkl
ST. LIBORY -- Ann M. Volkl, 85, of St. Libory died Thursday, April 30, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island from injuries suffered in an automobile accident Wednesday near St. Libory.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Libory's Catholic Church in St. Libory. The Revs. Walter Phelan and Robert Chamberlain will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the church, with a 4 p.m. Catholic Daughters rosary and an 8 p.m. parish rosary.
Memorials are suggested to the church.

Mrs. Volkl was born on Feb. 2, 1913, on a farm southeast of St. Libory to Anton and Mary (Wissing) Placke. She attended St. Libory parochial school and high school. She then worked as a caregiver for a local family.
She married
Richard Curtis on Oct. 1, 1941, at St. Libory. Mr. Curtis died on March 16, 1942. She worked for Northwestern Bell as a switchboard operator in St. Libory for five years.
She married
Bernard H. Volkl on Oct. 30, 1946, at St. Libory. The couple lived in St. Libory throughout their marriage. She worked at Hested's Lunch Counter in Grand Island and as a waitress at the Lone Tree Cafe in St. Libory.
She was a receptionist at her daughter's business, Pam's House of Beauty in Grand Island, from 1971 until 1978. She then helped baby-sit her grandchildren for several years.
She was an avid gardener, and she and her husband sold much of their produce to local restaurants. She loved her strawberry patches and flowers and enjoyed yearly deer hunting and traveling.
She was a member of St. Libory's Catholic Church, Altar Society, Christian Mothers, Catholic Daughters Ava Maria Court 1263 and the Platt-Duetsche.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Mark Volkl of St. Libory; two daughters, Jane (Mrs. Ed) Brozek of Glendale, Ariz., and Pam (Mrs. Jack) Tagel of Grand Island; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one sister, Josephine Hostler of Palmer.
She was preceded in death by her first husband; one granddaughter; one sister, Mary Franssen; and five brothers, John, Garrett, William, Sylvester and Herman Placke.
Kathleen Whetstone
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Kathleen Ann Whetstone, 59, of St. Paul, Minn., formerly of St. Libory, died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident near St. Libory.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island. The Revs. Don Larmore, Marty Egging and Jack Rademacher will officiate.

She attended Catholic school at St. Libory before coming to Grand Island and graduating from St. Mary's Catholic High School. She worked at Whetstone Motors in Grand Island as a bookkeeper.
She married
Robert "Bob" Whetstone on April 23, 1960, in Grand Island. They lived in Grand island from 1962 until 1966. They then moved to St. Paul, Minn., where she worked as a bookkeeper for Customs Display Inc. and Heritage Communications. At the time of her death, she was employed as a payroll clerk for a restaurant supply company in St. Paul, Minn.
She was a member of Guardian Angels Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters.
Survivors include her husband; five daughters, Kim (Mrs. Bill) Kroll-Whetstone of Cleveland; Theresa (Mrs. Dave) G'tzke and Karen (Mrs. Joel) Sturdevant, both of St. Paul, Minn., Christine Whetstone of Madison, Wis., and Jenny Whetstone of West St. Paul, Minn.; seven grandchildren; one brother, Robert Placke of Kearney; and her mother, of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her father. Her sister, Patricia, also died in the auto accident Wednesday.
