U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Thelma Bogart

HEBRON -- Thelma L. Bogart, 67, of Hebron, formerly of Grand Island, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at the Blue Valley Lutheran Care Home in Hebron.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. George Wheat will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Blue Valley Lutheran Care Home.

Mrs. Bogart was born on Oct. 3, 1931, at Grand Island to John and Fay (Killup) Redding. She grew up and was educated in the Grand Island area.

Survivors include three brothers, Eugene "Richard" Redding of Cotesfield, Gene Redding of Lincoln and Everte Redding of Aurora; and four sisters, Barbara Manners of Tucson, Ariz., Betty Williams of Bennington and Alice Pointer and Ethel Workman, both of Grand Island.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Violet Redding and Dorothy Newquest; and three brothers, John, Kenneth and Arthur Redding.

LeRoy Glass

FAIRFIELD -- LeRoy Glass, 88, of Fairfield died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Community Presbyterian Church in Fairfield. The Rev. Rick Cepris and Royce Buchtel will officiate. Burial will be in the Fairfield Cemetery.

McLaughlin Funeral Home of Clay Center is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Glass was born on Aug. 3, 1910, in Fairfield to Elza L. and Emma Josephine (Ridpath) Glass. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1929.

He married Norma Lucile Newson on March 24, 1934. They lived in Fairfield, and he worked at Farmers Union Oil Co. He retired in 1979.

Mrs. Glass died on April 15, 1982. Mr. Glass had lived at the IHS nursing center since August 1993.

He was a member of Community Presbyterian Church and the Fairfield Fire Department.

Survivors include two sons, Galen of Overland Park, Kan., and Raymond of Hastings; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leotta H'vet of Grand Island and Dorothy Blodget of Union Star, Mo.; and two brothers, Donald of Grand Island and Howard of DeWitt.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Rickey; and an infant daughter.

Alice Oberg

Alice A. Oberg, 92, of Grand Island, formerly of Aurora, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, in a Grand Island nursing home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora. The Rev. C. Roger Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. The casket will be closed at the services.

Mrs. Oberg was born on Feb. 2, 1907, at Aurora to Ely and Celia Elkins. She grew up at Aurora and graduated from Aurora High School.

She married Vernon Oberg on Aug. 26, 1938, at Aurora. They lived in Aurora until 1957, when they moved to Grand Island. Mr. Oberg died in November 1975. Mrs. Oberg moved to Lakeview Rehab/Nursing Center in Grand Island in October 1994.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Women's Association.

Survivors include seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and one sister, Viola Marquart of Rockville.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Carolee McMullen and Shirley Merritt; and one granddaughter.

'Barb' Beck

CENTRAL CITY -- Barbara Joanelle "Barb" Beck, 33, of Central City died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Stolley Park Church of Christ in Grand Island. David Bendickson will officiate. Burial will be in Pierce Chapel cemetery near Clarks.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Mrs. Beck was born on Oct. 13, 1965, in Grand Island to Orval and Jeanie (Sandquist) Nouzovsky. She graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1983 and received her associate of arts degree in accounting from Central Community College in Grand Island.

She married Steven Roy Beck on April 6, 1985, at the Church of Christ in Grand Island. They lived in Central City. She worked at Plains Irrigation for several years and then at Chief Automotive, where she was working as an electronics technician at the time of her death.

Mrs. Beck was a member of the Stolley Park Church of Christ in Grand Island. She enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing, tubing, traveling and taking road trips with her family.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Steven Chad at home; one daughter, Megan LaRhue at home; her parents, of Grand Island; her parents-in-law, Bill and LaRhue Beck of Clarks; two brothers, Orval Dean of Pine Bluff, Ark., and Barry Joe of St. Joseph, Mo.; and three sisters, Debra Jean (Mrs. Corbin) Erickson of Aurora, Kaylene Rose (Mrs. Jerald) Derr and Joanie Cheryce (Mrs. Robert) Guerrero, both of Grand Island.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Joseph and Rose Nouzovsky and Wesley and Jeanie Sandquist.

William Gordon

ST. PAUL -- William T. "Bill" Gordon, 78, of St. Paul died Saturday, March 27, 1999, at his daughter's home in Albuquerque, N.M.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. Officiating will be the Rev. Michael McDermott. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery in St. Paul with graveside military honors by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church with a 7 p.m. vigil service.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, Howard County Historical Society, St. Paul Library Foundation or Howard County Community Hospital.

Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gordon was born on May 30, 1920, at Cedar Rapids to James B. and Louise (VanAckeren) Gordon. He grew up in Cedar Rapids and graduated from Cedar Rapids High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a major. He was a Normandy Commissioned Day member, served with the 8th Air Force at the Battle of the Bulge and fought in two African and five European battles.

He married Daphne M. "Bobbe" Smith on Nov. 28, 1942, at Cheyenne, Wyo.

He formed the S.E. Smith Lumber Co. with his father-in-law, Rod Smith, and brothers-in-law, Evan and Don Smith. They had locations in Cedar Rapids, Greeley, Fullerton, St. Paul, Ansley, Anselmo, Broken Bow and Blair.

He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119, both of St. Paul; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 854, Fremont; Elks Lodge 604, Grand Island; Knights of Columbus Council 1312, Greeley, 40 and Eight; St. Paul Chamber of Commerce; and Blair Chamber of Commerce.

He enjoyed golfing. He gave to many local causes and charities and put numerous students through college.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Judith Gordon of Albuquerque, N.M., and Debby (Mrs. Leonard) Imes and Robyn Gordon, both of Phoenix; two sons, Bill Gordon of Indianapolis and James "Barney" Gordon of Omaha; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Ray and Jim Gordon, both of Cedar Rapids; and one sister, Helen Gordon-Thompson of Madison, Wis.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Gordon; one daughter, Victoria Whitcomb; one brother, Harold; and one sister, Lucille.

Ralph Harder

BOELUS -- Ralph F.H. Harder, 82, of Boelus died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Christ Lutheran Church in Cairo. The Rev. Glen Keynan will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Memorials are suggested to the Boelus-Dannebrog EMT Unit or the church.

Mr. Harder was born on April 12, 1916, on the family farm north of Cairo to Fredrick and Mary (Behring) Harder. He was educated in Cairo schools and graduated from high school there in 1935. He then farmed with his family.

He married Joyce Jess on Dec. 12, 1939, at Grand Island. The couple farmed near Cairo until 1968. They moved in 1968 to a farm near Boelus, where they farmed until his death.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church of Cairo. His hobby was assembling John Deere farm implements.

Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Diann (Mrs. Richard) Muhlbach, Marilyn (Mrs. Tom) Wilson of Memphis, Tenn., LaJean (Mrs. Ruel) Magnuson of Eagle, Renee (Mrs. John) Van Winkle of Farwell and Lynnette (Mrs. Don) Losh of Lincoln; 13 grandchildren; four step grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and six step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Daryl and Randel; two sisters, Viola Grotz and Leona Obermiller; and one brother, Wesley.
