'Florence' Weeks
SCOTIA -- Mary "Florence" Weeks, 94, of Scotia died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at the Howard County Memorial Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Scotia United Methodist Church. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery at Scotia.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Greeley Care Home, Scotia Rescue Unit or the church.
Linda Slapnicka
GENEVA -- Linda Mary Slapnicka, 55, of Geneva died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, in Geneva.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva. The Rev. Bonnie Linton-Hendrick will officiate. Burial will be in the Geneva Public Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Slapnicka was born on April 10, 1943, at York to Ephriam and Ethel (DeJung) Trautman.
Survivors include her husband, Franklin; two sons, Roger of Geneva and Brad of Hastings; one daughter, Donna Walker of York; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Steven Trautman of Bedford, Texas, and Dayle Trautman of Durant, Okla.; and three sisters, Ruth Ann Spargo of Fairmont, Betty Witherwax of Grand Island and Sandra Ladd of Fremont.
Nadine Trudeau
LAVISTA - Nadine A. Trudeau, 67, of LaVista died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery at Spalding.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. and a rosary at 7 p.m., Wednesday at Kahler-Dolce Mortuary in Omaha.
Further visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Scheef Funeral Home in Spalding. Rosaries will be at 4:30 and 8 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Survivors include two sons, Nelson of LaVista and Bruce of Millard; four grandchildren; and three sisters, Marcella Sheets and her twin sister, Noreen (Mrs. Ben) Biederman, both of Canon City, Colo., and Carolyn Bernt of Greeley.
Glen Jacobsen
CAMBRIA, Calif. -- Glen Richard Jacobsen, 82, of Cambria, Calif., died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, after heart surgery.
Mr. Jacobsen was cremated. Services will be in Cambria.
Memorials are suggested to the University of Nebraska.
Mr. Jacobsen was born on Oct. 22, 1916, on the family farm near Boelus to Peter and Edna (Jensen) Jacobsen. He attended country school and graduated from Boelus High School in 1932. He then attended the St. Paul Business College.
He moved in 1933 to Washington, D.C., where he worked for the Wages and Hours Division of the U.S. Labor Department. He traveled extensively in the United States, investigating working conditions.
He enlisted in the Navy in 1941 and served on landing ships through the Salerno, Italy; southern France; and Normandy invasions. He was discharged in 1946.
He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1950 and did accounting work for U.S. Steel in Venezuela for 12 years. He then retired to California, where he continued income tax work.
He married
Jane Palmer. She died in 1976.
He married
Alice May in January 1998.
Survivors include his wife and one brother, Don of St. Paul.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Max.
Genevieve Black
Genevieve C. Black, 82, of Grand Island died Friday, March 5, 1999, at Lakeview Rehab/Nursing Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. The Rev. Dave Rykwalder will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, with the Rev. Tom Ryan officiating at a rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Cathedral or Alzheimer's Association.
Mrs. Black was born Aug. 7, 1916, to Joseph and Mae (Anderson) Carmichael at Indianola. She grew up and attended school in Indianola, graduating from high school in 1934. She was a dental assistant for nine years following her graduation.
She married
Edmund Black on May 11, 1943, at Joplin, Mo. The couple lived in Grand Island and Norton, Kan. They moved back to Grand Island in 1964, where she worked as a sales clerk at Tober's and later as a bridal consultant at Schweser's. He died in May 1970. She retired in 1981. She moved to Lakeview Rehab/Nursing Center in 1993.
She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral.
She enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with her grandsons.
Survivors include one son, Lynn of Grand Island and two grandsons.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Gerald Carmichael and one sister, Greta Conlin.
Jimmy E. Michel
Jimmy E. Michel, 64, of Grand Island died Friday, March 5, 1999, at the home of his son in Joplin, Mo.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Kleine Funeral Home.
Survivors include three daughters Debora (Mrs. Jim) Encinger, Julie (Mrs. John) Hartford and Deanna (Mrs. Joel) Carlson, all of Grand Island.
Loye Carriker
BURWELL -- Loye G. Carriker, 89, of Burwell died Thursday, March 4, 1999, at Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Burwell. The Rev. Roger Gillming will officiate. Burial will be in the Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church building fund.
Mrs. Carriker was born Sept. 2, 1909, to Will and Grace (Schuyler) Weber in Loup County. She was educated in the Loup County school system.
She married
Lloyd F. Carriker on Feb. 23, 1930, at the Weber farm in Loup County. They lived in Broken Bow for six years until returning to the farm west of Burwell in 1947 where she lived all of her life. Her husband died on May 23, 1977, at the farm.
She was an active member of the United Methodist Church. She and her husband were Sunday school teachers for many years and held many watermelon parties and other fun times for them at their farm west of Burwell.
She enjoyed playing bridge and cribbage and driving her car. She loved to travel and had attended her son's wedding in May 1998 in the Boston area.
Survivors include a son, Russell Carriker; one grandson and two great-grandchildren.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, R' Weber and Bill Weber; four sisters, Vallie Stevens, Faye Cochran, Rea Lund and Eva Cuddeback, and two infant brothers.
