Walter Hasselman
Walter Max Hasselman, 79, of Grand Island, formerly of Fairmont, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services were on Tuesday at Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva. Mabrey Miller officiated. Burial was in the Fairmont Public cemetery with military graveside rites by Lt. Forbes Fairmont American Legion Post No. 21.
Mr. Hasselman was born on April 4, 1919, at Worms to Herman H. and Emma (Petzoldt) Hasselman. At a young age, he moved with his family to Grand Island, where he attended school. As a young man, he worked as an apprentice to become a dental technician.
He entered the U.S. Army on Sept. 21, 1942, at Fort Crook. His civilian profession as a dental technician qualified him to work in the Army Medical Corps. He was discharged at Battle Creek, Mich.
He married
Ruth Wingard on June 6, 1943. In the early 1950s, he moved his family to York, where he owned and operated the York Dental Lab. He worked for many dentists in the area.
In the early 1970s, his health made it impossible to continue his business. Eventually he moved to Fairmont. As his health continued to deteriorate, he moved to McPherson, Kan., to live with his son, Don.
He enjoyed gardening, and pumpkins were his specialty.
Mr. Hasselman had Parkinson's disease, which required constant monitoring. He had lived at the Grand Island Veterans Home for the past two years. This past summer, he was crowned watermelon king because of the large watermelons he grew in his garden.
Survivors include his son, Don; three granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Erma Hemmerling.
He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis; five brothers, Carl, Herman Jr., Alfred, Chris and Ernest; and two sisters, Helen and Linda.
Johnnie Buller
HAMPTON -- Johnnie E. Buller, 82, of Hampton died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at Hearthstone in York.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora. The Rev. Loren Cooper will officiate. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.
Mr. Buller was born on June 27, 1916, in Hamilton County to Jacob and Elizabeth (Pankratz) Buller. He grew up and was educated at a country school south of Hampton.
He married
Leota Bettger on Oct. 6, 1946. They farmed south of Hampton, and he worked at "Farm Ade" in Aurora for several years. He later worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant for five years. He semiretired on the farm until 1996, when they moved into Hampton. He entered the Hearthstone in York in September 1998.
He enjoyed working on the farm, fishing, playing cards and telling stories.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ron of Cawker City, Kan., and Royce of Hampton; four daughters, Connie (Mrs. Ron) Hinman of Fullerton, Ruth Wengler of Aurora, Donna (Mrs. Virgil) Stearns of Rising City and Pat (Mrs. Pat) Shank of Montrose, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Henry; and one sister, Elizabeth.
Raymond Kelso
CENTRAL CITY -- Raymond Steven Kelso, 75, of Central City died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at Midlands Medical Center in Papillion.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Revs. Debra Tompsett-Welch and Bob Neben will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Burial will be in St. John's cemetery at Kronborg.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Kelso was born on Aug. 31, 1923, at Riverton to Oak Lee and Anna Elizabeth (Juggert) Kelso. He graduated from Riverton High School in 1941. He entered the U.S. Navy in December 1941. He served in the Pacific theater during World War II and also served in Korea and Vietnam.
He married
Helene Jacobs on Jan. 19, 1955, in Franklin. He retired from the military in 1968. After his retirement, he moved to Central City. He worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant near Grand Island, Dickinson Construction in Marquette for several years and Atlantic Homes in Central City for about 15 years.
He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and driving around the countryside to check on crops.
Survivors include two sons, Vaughn Kelso of Hickman and Steven Kelso of Central City; three daughters, Victoria (Mrs. Allen) Smith and Margaret (Mrs. Rick) Polzkill, both of Papillion, and Pamela (Mrs. Craig) Tunks of Central City; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Mildred Kelso of Holdrege.
He was preceded in death by one son, Vernon Kelso; three brothers, Don, Bob and Gerald Kelso; three sisters, Maxine Kelso, Helen Smith and Maybelle Kelso; and his former wife.
Steve Papiernik
ORD -- Steve J. Papiernik, 93, of Ord died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Rev. James Warner will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. rosary, Wednesday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the Ord Alumni Scholarship Fund.
Mr. Papiernik was born on Nov. 18, 1905, in a sod house west of Ord in the Michigan Township of Valley County to Jacob and Anna (Furtak) Papiernik. When he was 15, the family moved to California, where they lived for two years. They returned to Valley County and lived west of Ord for a short time before moving to a farm northeast of Elyria. He was a 1924 graduate of Ord High School.
He married
Barbara Suminski on Oct. 19, 1926. The couple moved to a farm west of Ord, where they lived for 16 years. They continued to farm north of Ord until 1965, when they moved into Ord. He moved into the Valley County Nursing Home in November 1997.
He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and the Elks Lodge. He served on the District 12 school board, was assistant county assessor and took land measurements for Triple A.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Don of Ord; two daughters, Evelyn (Mrs. Adrian) Kusek of Burwell and Elva (Mrs. Martin) Shonka of Schuyler; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one great-grandson; four brothers, including an infant brother; and two sisters.
Bernice Templin
BROKEN BOW -- Bernice G. Templin, 73, of Broken Bow, formerly of Berwyn, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. The Rev. Cliff Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be in the Janesville cemetery near Berwyn.
Mrs. Templin was born on Sept. 12, 1925, at Kearney to Hans Leo and Millie May (Godfrey) Boysen.
She married
Martin O. Templin on Nov. 24, 1948. They lived on the family farm at Elm Creek. They moved to Berwyn in 1959. Mr. Templin died on June 16, 1991.
Survivors include three sons, Martin of Louisville, Colo., John of Berwyn and Ronald of Broken Bow; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Leland Bleck of Beatrice.
Diana Medley
HARVARD -- Diana L. Medley, 49, of Harvard died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at Hilltop Estates Nursing Home in Gothenburg.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Brand-Wilson Chapel in Hastings. The Rev. Larry Viter will officiate. Burial will be in Parkview cemetery at Hastings.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 a.m. to service time Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Medley was born on June 23, 1949, at Hastings to Raymond and Valdean (Sentock) Perkins. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1967. She worked at Dutton Lainson.
She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Harvard.
Survivors include three daughters, Dena Favinger of Cozad, Jessica Whelan of Grand Island and Valoree Smock of Harvard; one son, James Smock of Omaha; four grandchildren; one sister, Penny Sanders of Hastings; and one brother, Raymond Perkins of Hastings.
She was preceded in death by her parents and stepmother, Eva Perkins.
