Helen D'Avis
Helen J. D'Avis, 70, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Martin Egging will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mrs. D'Avis was born on May 24, 1927, at Grand Island to Clarence and Hazel (Scott) Alter. She grew up and attended school in Grand Island in Salt Lake City.
She married
Ralph D'Avis on Dec. 12, 1965, at Kansas City, Mo. Mr. D'Avis died in August 1981. Shortly after his death, Mrs. D'Avis moved back to Grand Island.
She worked as a care technician at the Nebraska Veterans Home until ill health forced her to retire in 1994.
She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, the Eagles Auxiliary and the Saddle Club.
Survivors include two sons, Jack Perkins of Seattle and Jerry Perkins of Kansas City, Mo.; two grandchildren; and one sister, Esther Highland of Grand Island.
Anne O'Brien
Anne T. O'Brien, 69, of Grand Island died Monday, Feb. 10, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. Harry Kurtenbach will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m., Thursday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Cathedral or the donor's choice.
Mrs. O'Brien was born on Sept. 29, 1928, at Mount Pleasant, Mich., to John and Lillian (Gannon) Hackett. She grew up and received her education in Mount Pleasant, graduating from high school in 1946. She graduated from Central Michigan University in 1950.
She married
George P. "Pat" O'Brien on July 18, 1953, in Dallas. The couple moved to Grand Island in 1956.
She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral. She enjoyed playing golf and bridge. She was active in the Nebraska Women's Amateur Golf Association.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Jim O'Brien of Bethlehem, Pa., and Steve O'Brien of Lincoln; a daughter, Maureen Weber of Grand Island; three grandchildren; two brothers, Pat Hackett of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Tom Hackett of Detroit; and three sisters, Mary Valliere, Rose Nanzig and Kathleen Rainer, all of Grand Rapids, Mich.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Jim, Edward and Frank Hackett.
Evelyn Bartunek
LOUP CITY -- Leah Evelyn Bartunek, 91, of Loup City died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at Community Care of Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Loup City. The Rev. Heidi Revelo will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery in Loup City.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Higgins Funeral home in Loup City.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or donor's choice.
Mrs. Bartunek was born Oct. 11, 1906, at Loup City to Samuel and Elvira (Goodwin) Daddow. She grew up and attended Loup City Schools.
On June 18, 1925, she married
James Bartunek at Loup City. She worked in various places in Loup City, the last at the Loup City Medical Clinic as a receptionist for several years before retiring. They spent 14 winters in Pharr, Texas.
She was an 81-year member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Lois Ritz and Ruth Czaplewski, both of Grand Island, and Marion (Mrs. Earl) Hancock of Loup City; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and thee great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers, Alonza "Lonnie," Frank and Earl; and three sisters, Pearl Baliman, Edna Smalley and Mabel Rowe.
'Wick' Dethlefs
ROCKVILLE -- Edwin C. "Wick" Dethlefs, 80, of Rockville died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Church of Christ in Rockville. The Rev. Fred Gardner will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Loup City.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna.
Mr. Dethlefs was born on Dec. 23, 1917, in Sherman County to Charles and Minnie (Hankins) Dethlefs. He was a graduate of Rockville High School.
He married
Mae Ann Krakowski on May 28, 1941. The couple lived on a farm near Rockville. He worked at the Sherman Dam, Ravenna Cheese and the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. He retired from farming in 1980.
He was a member of the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department and the Elks Lodge in Ord. He served on the rural school board for Rockville and Loup City for more than 35 years.
He enjoyed playing cards.
Survivors include a son, Gerald "Buzz" Dethlefs of Omaha; four daughters, Karen Wilson of Ord, Patty Moritz and Denise Wardyn, both of Grand Island, and Cindy Ash of Arcadia; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Georgene; a grandson; two brothers and two sisters.
Kimberly Donner
GLENVIL -- Kimberly Kay Donner, 30, of Glenvil died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Howser-Fillmer Mortuary in Norfolk. The Rev. Jack Nitz will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park cemetery at Norfolk.
Mrs. Donner was born Dec. 2, 1967, in Norfolk to Layton R. and Diana J. (Carlson) Doffin. She graduated from Norfolk Senior High School in 1985.
She married
Leon Donner at Hastings on Dec. 5, 1985. They lived in Glenvil.
Survivors include her husband; her mother, Diana Doffin of Pierce; a sister, Rynda L. (Mrs. Jeff) Gerdes of Pierce; a stepdaughter, Dustina Donner of Hastings; stepson, Kevin Donner of Omaha; and a step grandson.
She was preceded in death by her father.
David Epp
Stromsburg -- David D. Epp, 31, of Stromsburg died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.
Virginia Hunter
BROKEN BOW -- Virginia Hunter, 88, of Broken Bow died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Cliff Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
Mrs. Hunter was born on April 25, 1909, at Hazard to Joseph and Roxanna (Haddix) Miller. She attended school at Hazard and graduated from Hazard High School in 1929. She lived in the Sandhills and cooked on various ranches.
She married
Oscar Hunter on May 1, 1937, at Rushville. They lived in the Sandhills and worked on ranches. They moved to Broken Bow in 1969 to be near their daughter, Ann, and her family. She did baby-sitting for many young children in Broken Bow. Mr. Hunter died in 1985. Mrs. Hunter lived in her home until 1994, when she became a resident of Sandhills Manor Nursing Home.
Survivors include her daughter, Ann (Mrs. Kenneth) Nelson of Broken Bow; two grandchildren; and one sister, Lois Miller of Rushville.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by one granddaughter in 1964, two brothers and four sisters.
