U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

David Epp

STROMSBURG -- David D. Epp, 31, of Stromsburg died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stromsburg. Chaplain Dick Bauer will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.

There will be no visitation.

Palmer Funeral Home of Stromsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Epp was born on Jan. 27, 1967, at Lincoln to Theodore J. and Margaret F. (Dawson) Epp. He graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School in 1985. After high school, he took part in a carpentry course offered at Chadron State College by the Nebraska Job Corps.

He lived in Omaha for a short time and then moved to Lincoln, where he lived from 1988 to 1993. He moved to Stromsburg in 1993.

Survivors include his fiance, Candy Etherton of Stromsburg; two daughters, Carolyn and China, both of Stromsburg; his parents, of Lincoln; one brother, Todd Epp of Lincoln; and two sisters, Kristi Epp of Lincoln and Andrea (Mrs. Greg) Steffers of Charleston, S.C.

Iva Janitscheck

TAYLOR -- Iva Janitscheck, 82, of Taylor died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Revs. Don Dennison and Mike Bratchley will officiate. Burial will be in the Taylor Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Sargent Nursing Center Activity Room.

Mrs. Janitscheck born on May 25, 1915, in the Kent community east of Taylor to J. Phillip and Nora B. (Campain) Lewis. She attended Kent School through the 10th grade and graduated from Taylor High School in 1932.

She married Elmer L. Janitscheck on March 1, 1934, in Burwell. They lived on farms their entire life until moving into Taylor. She moved to Burwell in 1993 and had lived at the Sargent Nursing Center since May 1997.

Survivors include one son, Rudy Janitscheck of Taylor; two daughters, Carole (Mrs. Jim) Squiers of Grandview, Mo., and Nancy (Mrs. Dave) McIntyre of Mead, Colo.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and five sisters, Etta Lewis of Burwell, Marie Harris of Fort Collins, Colo., Alma Payton of Taylor, Fern Janitscheck of Ravenna and Mildred Fales of Burwell.

She was preceded in death by her husband; five brothers, Robert, Lawrence, Irvin, Albert and Earl Lewis; and four sisters, Violet Berkheimer, Della Beckett, Pearl Matousek and Retta Lewis.

Victor Johnson

ALBION -- Victor Davis Johnson, 55, of rural Albion died after a long illness Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. The Rev. Brian Bergum and seminary intern Annette Minderman will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Albion.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.

Mr. Johnson was born on April 22, 1942, on a farm near Boone to M. Davis and Helen E.C. (Gustafson) Johnson. He attended Boone County District 74 School and graduated from Albion High School in 1960.

He married Janet L. Palmer on Dec. 1, 1963, at Wheeler Memorial Presbyterian Church in Omaha. They lived west of St. Edward for 13 years, then lived at the Johnson home place west of Boone for 21 years. He farmed and raised stock cows.

He was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church. He was an active member of the Boone County District 66 Board of Education, which he served as secretary for several years; and the District 74 Board of Education, which he served as president for several years.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Eric D. Johnson, Andrew D. Johnson and Adam D. Johnson, all of Albion; one daughter, Deana L. Johnson of Albion; and one sister, Bonnie (Mrs. R.D.) McAllister of Murfreesboro, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Gloria.

Fern Kuhn

LOUP CITY -- Fern I. Kuhn, 92, of Loup City died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City.

Services are pending with Peters Funeral Home of Loup City.

Eugene Scott

TAYLOR -- Eugene F. Scott, 76, of Taylor died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.

Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Calvary United Methodist Church in Taylor. The Rev. Jim Miller will officiate.

Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Burwell is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Taylor Ambulance Fund.

Mr. Scott was born on Oct. 17, 1921, in Akron, Ohio, to Floyd and Lottie (Wonn) Scott. He worked as a police officer in Akron. He walked a beat and also patrolled on a motorcycle. He moved to California in 1952.

He married Frela Hay on May 30, 1953, in Yuma, Ariz. They lived in California. Mr. Scott was an officer in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department from 1953 until 1974, when he retired. He continued to work as a security officer at two community colleges. They moved to Taylor in 1983.

He was a past member of the Los Angeles County Employees Association. He enjoyed riding motorcycles.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Randy of Taylor, Jeffery of North Hills, Calif., and Eugene of Akron, Ohio; one daughter, Carol (Mrs. Rick) Mullins of Akron, Ohio; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and two sisters, Harriet (Mrs. Charles) Burnum of Akron, Ohio, and Pauline Williams of Canton, Ohio.

Arthur Schweitzer

FULLERTON -- Arthur Schweitzer, 74, of the Fullerton Manor died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at the Boone County Community Hospital in Albion.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Fullerton Manor. The Rev. George McQuinn will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery.

Palmer's Funeral Home in Fullerton is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schweitzer was born on Nov. 26, 1923, in Curtis. He was placed in various foster homes. He attended school at Frontier County and Curtis.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a spotlight operator in the South Pacific.

He married Deta Puls on Jan. 25, 1947, in Norton, Kan. They had three sons and two daughters. They divorced in 1969.

Mr. Schweitzer worked as a guard, ranch hand, driller, press operator and warehouse stocker. He lived at the Fullerton Manor from Oct. 23, 1997, until his death.

Survivors are unknown.

Don Shoup

CENTRAL CITY -- Don Francis Shoup, 74, of Central City died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Fridhem Lutheran Church in Hordville. The Revs. Elwood Hipple and Fred Wolff will officiate. Burial will be in the Hordville Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Mr. Shoup was born on March 6, 1923, in Pawnee City to Vernon and Hannah (Rinne) Shoup. He attended rural schools near Pawnee City and his first year of high school at Barnston High. His family moved to Central City, and he graduated from Central City High School in 1941.

Mr. Shoup worked in Iowa, California and Oregon before returning to Nebraska to farm near Hordville.

He married Darlene Larsen on March 26, 1944, in Hordville. They lived in the Hordville area and farmed from 1944 to 1987, when Mr. Shoup retired. They then moved to Central City. Mrs. Shoup died in 1994.

Mr. Shoup was a member of the Fridhem Lutheran Church in Hordville and Masonic Lodge 311 in Polk. He had served on the Hordville school board and the United Co-op Elevator board. He enjoyed doing repair work and working on tractors. He enjoyed all sports, football in particular.

Survivors include two sons, Ron Shoup of Central City and Gary Shoup of Hampton; three daughters, Donna (Mrs. Harold) Ortegren of Marquette, Vicki (Mrs. Garth) Scism of Kearney and Jodi (Mrs. Don) Urban of Lincoln; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Emmett Shoup of Hordville and his twin brother, Dean Shoup of Sutherland, Ore.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Tammy Shoup; one brother, Norman Shoup; and two sisters, Luella Curtis and an infant sister.
