Gretchen Wells
SARGENT -- Gretchen Wells, 86, of Sargent died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at the Sargent Nursing Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Samm Johnston will officiate. Burial will be in the Gates cemetery west of Sargent.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
'Mira' Curren
Mesa, Ariz. -- Anna Lamira 'Mira' Curren, 97, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Albion, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, in a Mesa nursing home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Albion. The Rev. Eric Biehl will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Albion.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Mrs. Curren was born on April 7, 1900, at Schuyler to William Dexter and Anna Centennial (Marrill) Cox. She graduated from Schuyler High School. She worked as a telegraph operator, managing the Kearney office until her marriage.
She married
Joseph Nathan Province in 1922. They moved to Albion in 1923.
She married
Jesse Allen Curren in 1930. They lived in Albion until moving to Carmichael, Calif., in April 1990. She was a homemaker and had worked at various jobs.
Mrs. Curren had been a member of the Methodist Church since 1912 and was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
Survivors include two daughters, Janice (Mrs. Jerry) Hintzman and Dorothy (Mrs. Paul) Hayhurst, both of Mesa, Ariz.; two stepdaughters, Ruby Dority and Catherine DePiano; 19 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Bernice (Mrs. Cox) Merten of Battle Lake, Mich.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Robert Province and William Curren; two stepsons, James and John Curren; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Eva Cox; and two brothers, Roland Cox and an infant brother.
John Buettner
John L. Buettner, 42, of 904 N. Wheeler died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, of natural causes at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Marty Egging will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home, with a rosary at 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Buettner was born Dec. 16, 1956, to Frederick and Roseanne (Rea) Buettner at Grand Island. He grew up and attended school in Grand Island, graduating from Grand Island Senior High in 1975. He worked in construction.
He was a member of Platt Duetsche Society. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Survivors include his mother; one brother, Thomas of North Platte and two sisters, Patti and Pamela Stout, both of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Harold Clark
Harold O. Clark, 71, of Grand Island died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, at Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home chapel in Grand Island. The Revs. Dean Hanson and Gary Clayton will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family receiving friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Clark was born Feb. 6, 1927, to Orville and Velma (Herrick) Clark at Clay Center. He grew up in Nuckolls County. He attended a rural school in Nelson. At age 15, he moved to Grand Island with his family and attended school there. He left school to join the U.S. Army and served during World War II.
After his discharge, he married
Darlene Weaver on Feb. 4, 1956, at Robinson, Ill. The couple lived in Illinois for 10 years where he had a milk distributorship and later was a supervisor for Heath Dairy. They moved back to Grand Island in 1965 where he co-owned Clark Brothers Sanitation.
After retiring in 1981, he concentrated on the fur business he started in 1965.
He was a member of First Christian Church and the Eagles. He enjoyed fishing and trapping.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Doreen (Mrs. Curt) Fenster of Chapman, Janet (Mrs. Jim) Ummel of Loup City and Cynthia (Mrs. Norman) Erickson of Pleasanton; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Ronald of Grand Island and one sister, Gayle Lukaszewski of Mesa, Ariz.
Daniel Panowicz
Daniel S. Panowicz, 59, of 7551 N. Webb Road died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at St. Francis Skilled Care Unit.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Donald Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with a rosary at 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the church.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Panowicz was born Sept. 29, 1939, to Stanley and Victoria (Chelewski) Panowicz at St. Paul. He moved with his family to Grand Island in 1949, where he grew up and graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1956. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1957 to 1961.
He married
Elaine Bogus on Nov. 24, 1962, at St. Paul. The couple lived on a farm north of Grand Island, where he farmed and worked for Cargill's feed division. Failing health forced his early retirement last November.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Liederkranz. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, Nebraska football and traveling.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Richard of Omaha; four daughters, Lori (Mrs. Tim) Vinton of Hyannis, Sandy (Mrs. Chris) Moser of Clearwater, Susie (Mrs. John) Kasparek of Lincoln and Amy Panowicz of Fremont; five granddaughters and one brother, Al of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Gary; his parents and one sister, Leona Albright.
'Scud' Scudder
Willa "Scud" Scudder, 76, of Grand Island, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Glenn LaBrie
DONIPHAN -- Glenn Albert LaBrie, 81, of Doniphan died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Doniphan. The Rev. John Hawkins will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar View cemetery at Doniphan.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. A rosary service will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Crosier Monastery in Hastings or St. Ann's Catholic Church.

Mr. LaBrie was born Sept. 7, 1917, to Albert J. and Clara (Bassett) LaBrie at Hastings. He grew up near Trumbull, attending Salem Country School. He graduated from Trumbull High School in 1934.
He married
Lurye Rader on Sept. 7, 1938, at Giltner. He farmed near Giltner for 41 years and did carpentry work and custom harvesting before moving to Doniphan to retire.
He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Crosier Apostolate and a charter member of Giltner Lion's Club.
Survivors include his wife; seven sons, Robert "Jody", Francis and Jeff, all of Doniphan, David of Minden, Richard of Giltner, Tom of Grand Island and Tim of Burlington, Colo.; three daughters, Margaret (Mrs. Loren) Baxa of Doniphan, Donna (Mrs. Donald) Simcoe of Dunedin, Fla. and JoAnne (Mrs. Tom) Lambert of Giltner; 28 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Koenig and Thelma Gergen and one grandson, Bartt LaBrie.
