Gladys Christensen
GRANITE BAY, Calif. -- Gladys I. Christensen, 87, of Granite Bay, Calif., formerly of Broken Bow, died on Dec. 31, 1998, at the home of her niece, Joyce Allen, in Granite Bay.
Memorial services will be in late spring or early summer in Broken Bow.
Mrs. Christensen was born on July 20, 1911, in a sod house near Broken Bow to William Thomas and Phyllis Katheryn (Govaerts) Haumont. She graduated from Dry Valley High School in 1929. She obtained a teaching degree and graduated from the University of Nebraska. She also earned a bachelor of arts from the University of Wyoming.
She did graduate work at the University of California-Berkeley, University of Denver, University of Colorado and University of Utah.
She married
P.L. "Chris" Christensen on June 7, 1933. Mr. Christensen died in September 1995.
Mrs. Christensen taught for 29 years, both in the primary grades and high school. Most of her teaching was in Ansley, Comstock and Taylor. She and her husband also taught at the Heart Mountain Internment Camp during the war.
After her father's death in December 1965, the couple purchased the Haumont Ranch where she grew up. They lived there for many years. They purchased a home in Broken Bow about 10 years ago to be near her husband's elderly mother.
The couple spent their winters in Scottsdale, Ariz., to be closer to their family. She became an expert at silver smithing. She enjoyed crafts and art and was an expert seamstress. She worked on the genealogy of her family. After her retirement from teaching in 1970, she and her husband traveled the world.
They were members of St. John's Episcopal Church in Broken Bow. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Gen. George A. Custer Chapter. She was also a member of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include a sister, Dorothy (Mrs. "Vern") Gangwish of Casper, Wyo.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Emile L. Haumont.
Glenn Gillham
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Glenn Gillham, 79, of Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of Grand Island, died of a heart attack on Jan. 4, 1999.
Mr. Gillham was born on Feb. 7, 1919, in Bayard and lived in Grand Island and Omaha before he moved to Des Moines.
He was a retired mill work estimator and spent his first working years with the Sothman Co. in Grand Island.
He was a World War II veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Kay; two sons, Steven of Fresno, Calif., and Timothy of Beaver Lake; a daughter, Gloria Follett of Des Moines; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one grandson.
Dale Oakley
LINDSBORG, Kan. -- Dale G. Oakley, 53, of Lindsborg, Kan., formerly of Belgrade, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at the Salina Regional Health Center-Santa Fe Campus at Salina, Kan.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Lindsborg. The Rev. Jeff Waugh will officiate.
Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the Main cemetery at Belgrade. The Rev. Tim Wagner will officiate. Military rites will be conducted.
Visitation with closed casket will be from 2 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Thursday at Hays Funeral Home of Lindsborg, Kan.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Oakley was born on Nov. 19, 1945, in Nance County to Delbert "Pat" and Bessie (Cantral) Oakley. He had lived at Lindsborg for the past 24 years, moving from Belgrade. He was a truck driver for the Schwan's Co.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War.
He married
Wilma Calahan on May 25, 1982, at Las Vegas.
He was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church at Lindsborg and Emil Pinkal American Legion Post 140 of Lindsborg.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bart R. Oakley of Lindsborg and Beau A. Oakley of Marquette, Kan.; two stepsons, Ronald D. Hughes of Denver and Donald F.G. Hughes of Salina, Kan.; a stepdaughter, Michelle R. Hughes of Lindsborg; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; his mother and stepfather, Bessie and Harold Rudman of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Dan L. Oakley of Effingham, Ill., and Robert "Bob" L. Oakley of Genoa; and two sisters, Donna J. Ahlers of Fullerton and Linda K. Oakley of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Betty Parkos
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Betty Ann Parkos of Corpus Christi, Texas, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at her home after a two-year battle with cancer.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.
A rosary, funeral and burial will be in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Parkos was born in Ord to Stanley Sr. and Bessie (Hulinsky) Kovarik. She lived half her life in Corpus Christi, Texas.
She was a member of the Altar Society, parish council, Nueces County Psychological Association and Aggie Moms Club. She was a liturgical minister, marriage tribunal advocate, associate of Incarnate Word Academy and Blessed Sacrament, Nueces County Court mediator, CCD teacher and Literacy Council tutor.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia (Mrs. Clint) Carter of Dayton, Ohio; a son, Mike Parkos of Dallas; her parents, of Burwell; two sisters, Evelyn Kovarik and Marilyn (Mrs. Al) Dempsey, both of Denver; and three brothers, Bob of Anaheim, Calif., Frank of Loup City and Stan Jr. of Burwell.
Margaret Peterson
LINCOLN -- Margaret W. Peterson, 89, of Lincoln, formerly of Stromsburg, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at Eastmont Towers in Lincoln.
Services were on Tuesday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Swede Home. The Rev. Louise Williams officiated. Burial was in the Swede Home Cemetery.
Palmer Funeral Home of Stromsburg was in charge of arrangements.
She was born on Nov. 29, 1909, near Osceola to Henry and Alfreda (Fredrickson) Peterson. She attended District 8 School in Polk County and Luther College in Wahoo before attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she received her bachelor of science degree in education.
She later took correspondence courses from the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of Hawaii. She received her master's degree in arts from UNL.
She began her teaching career in elementary education and music. She taught at numerous schools, including those in Giltner, Atkinson, North Platte, Hastings and Lincoln. She retired in 1974 after 44 years of teaching and lived at Eastmont Towers.
She was a member of the Lincoln Association of Retired Teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma, PEO, Young in Heart, WELCA, Calvary Lutheran Church in Swede Home and the First Lutheran Church in Lincoln. She enjoyed the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra and spending time at the library
Survivors include three nieces, Kathleen Turnbull, Debbie Miller and Pam Smith, all of Colorado; and one nephew, Andrew Peterson of Colorado.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Wilma Peterson and Helen Gustafson; and two brothers, Allen Peterson and James Peterson.
Ellen Powl
Ellen Rebecca Powl, 82, of 2221 W. John died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. John McKinley will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be at a later date in Lancaster, Pa.
Memorials are suggested to the church scholarship fund or Goodwill Industries Foundation.
Mrs. Powl was born on July 7, 1916, in Lancaster, Pa., to Martin Z. and Violet (Troop) Diffenbach. She grew up in Lancaster and graduated from Manheim Township High School in 1934.
She married
J. Frank Powl on March 22, 1941, in Lancaster. They lived in Lancaster until Mr. Powl was transferred to Grand Island as general manager of Sperry-New Holland in 1966. Mr. Powl died on Nov. 1, 1989.
Mrs. Powl was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, PEO Sisterhood Chapter CK and Rotary Anns. She was also a volunteer for the American Red Cross and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Survivors include two daughters, Diane (Mrs. John) Brownell of Grand Island and Barbara (Mrs. James) Sahling of Lincoln; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Mollie Singleton and Audrey Hauser, both of Lancaster.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Norma.
