Robert Wheeler
Robert "Bob" W. Wheeler, 65, of Grand Island died Saturday, May 29, 1999 at his home.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Abundant Life Christian Center with the Rev. Steve Warriner officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Abundant Life Christian Center Nursing Miniseries, The First Church of the Nazarene or Abundant Life Christian Center.
Mr. Wheeler was born July 3, 1933 to Muriel and Juanita (Grove) Wheeler in Norfolk. He grew up and was educated in Grand Island. He began working for the Island Supply Co. in 1949. He entered the U.S. Army in 1953, serving during the Korean conflict.
On Jan. 24, 1954 he married
Carolyn "Carol" Nelson in Kenesaw. The couple made their home in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and then moved to Grand Island after Mr. Wheeler was discharged from the service in 1955.
He then returned to work at The Island Supply Co., where he spent 47 years, and also attended the Detroit Diesel School.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn of Grand Island; one daughter, Sherry Sorensen of Fairfield; three sons, Robert of Verdon, David of Olathe, Kan., and Dennis of Miami; his mother, Juanita; nine grandchildren; and one sister, Betty (Mrs. Walter) Jaeschke of Arcadia.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Leslie, and his father.
Jack Keezer
ANSLEY -- Jack Keezer, 67, of Ansley died Sunday, May 30, 1999 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with Rev. Dale Cummins officiating. Burial will be in the Ansley cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Maudie Schneller
BROKEN BOW -- Maudie Schneller, 94, of Broken Bow, formerly of Ansley, died Sunday, May 30, 1999 at the Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Funeral service are pending with Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Ruth Thomas
GIBBON -- Ruth G. Thomas, 88, a former Gibbon resident, died Saturday, May 29, 1999 at the Mother Hull Home in Kearney.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Gibbon Riverside cemetery with Andy Vega offering words of comfort. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Thomas was born Nov. 9, 1910 in Shelton to Raymond and Gertrude (Washburn) Thomas. She grew up and received her education in Shelton. She worked at the Shelton Cafe for a number of years, and later as a health care giver at the Kearney hospital and Kearney nursing homes.
On Aug. 1, 1931, she married
William "Bill" Thomas in Kearney. The couple made their home in the Gibbon area. She enjoyed being a member of numerous card clubs.
In 1992 she moved to Kearney Manor and in 1996 to the Mother Hull Home.
Survivors include three sons, Billie of Wood River, Bob of Shelton and LeRoy of Georgetown, Tex.; two daughters, Anna (Mrs. Lloyd) Tavenner and Joan (Mrs. Keith) Green, both of Kearney; two brothers, Roger Zimmerman of Las Vegas, Nev., and Raymond Zimmerman of Mesa, Ariz.; 17 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, one grandson, one brother and a sister.
Dan Vincent
STROMSBURG -- Dana A. "Popcorn" Vincent, 55, of Stromsburg died Friday, May 28, 1999 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg with the Rev. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.
Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Vincent was born Dec. 17, 1943 to Dana and Alberta (Irvine) Vincent in Pittsburgh, Pa. In the late 1950s his father retired in Stromsburg, and Mr. Vincent attended Stromsburg schools. He graduated from Stromsburg High School in 1962.
During his school years he worked at the Stromsburg Theatre where he got his nickname, "Popcorn."
After graduation he moved to Dallas and attended mortuary school for a short time. He then began his career as a professional musician along with working in the food service industry as a chef.
He traveled throughout the United States but spent most of his time in Arizona and South Dakota.
He returned to Nebraska where he lived for the past four years and was most recently employed at Woody's Steakhouse in Central City.
Mr. Vincent still played his instruments on a regular basis. His other hobbies included model railroad equipment.
He was a member of the Model Railroad Association and the United Methodist Church of Stromsburg. He also enjoyed cooking and spending time with his son.
Survivors include his wife, Tammy of Clarks and one son, Jason.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
'Grandpa' Meyer
Alfred "Grandpa" Meyer, 87, of Grand Island died Thursday, May 13, 1999, as a result of a traffic accident north of Grand Island.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church. The Rev. Daniel Bremer will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Meyer was born on May 31, 1911, at Barbrake, Hanover, Germany, to Herman and Anna (Bormann) Meyer. He came to live in the United States with his parents and five brothers and sisters in 1913. They landed at Ellis Island. He was raised in Burwell and attended a country school.
He married
Evangeline Schwarz on March 30, 1933, at Grand Island. He became a naturalized citizen on Jan. 11, 1943, in Grand Island. He lived in the Palmer area most of his married
life. They moved to a farm south of Grand Island in 1963 and into Grand Island in 1976. He continued to farm until his death.
He enjoyed playing cards. He was a member of the Platt-Duetsche Society and Grace Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two sons, Dennis Meyer of Central City and Paul Meyer of Alda; two daughters, Delores (Mrs. Marion) Omel and Charlene (Mrs. Clarence) Hiegel, both of Grand Island; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two brothers, Martin Meyer of Palmer and Herman Meyer of Doniphan; and three sisters, Rosa Hoback of Grand Island, Sophia Kinsey of Mineral Wells, Texas, and Freida DeHart of Lakewood, Colo.
His wife died in 1988. He also was preceded in death by one son, LeRoy; one grandson; one great-grandson; three brothers; and three sisters.
Irwin Underberg
Irwin Otto Underberg, 82, of the Grand Island Veterans Home, formerly of Broken Bow and Norfolk, died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Norfolk.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Norfolk Home for Funerals.
Glenn Groshans Sr.
HASTINGS -- Glenn Groshans Sr., 73, of Hastings died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Parkview cemetery in Hastings.
A rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Brand-Wilson Chapel in Hastings. The family will greet friends before the rosary.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from noon until the rosary Sunday at Brand-Wilson Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Groshans was born on Oct. 31, 1925, on a farm near Davenport to Harry and Mary (Waldmeier) Groshans. His family later lived near Deshler. He graduated from the eighth grade at District 50 School. He graduated from Deshler High School in 1943. He worked at the lumber yard and the Deshler Hotel and enlisted in the Navy in March 1944.
He married
Florence Genzmer on May 13, 1944, at Smith Center, Kan. He was a signalman on a merchant ship and was discharged in February 1946. He began working at Rural Gas. In 1952, he went to work for Farm Service, which was later sold to Consumers Service Co., where he was assistant manager. He semi-retired in 1990.
He was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Jackie (Mrs. Steven) Carl of Hastings, Mary (Mrs. Randy) Smith of Grand Island and Toni Woodard of Lincoln; five sons, Glenn Jr. of Hastings, Dennis, Daniel, Steve and Fred, all of Lincoln; 18 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Florence Richardson of Augusta, Ga.; and one brother, Donald Grosshans of Deshler.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael.
