Charles 'Rick' Dickson
Charles R. "Rick" Dickson, 55, of Grand Island died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, as a result of a traffic accident near Gothenburg.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 3, 1998, at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. John Douglas Russell will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Dickson was born on May 28, 1943, at Callaway to Charles and Mary (Bruhn) Dickson. He was raised and educated in Grand Island.
He married
Lois Ryan in 1963 in Grand Island. He lived in Grand Island and was self-employed as a manufacturer's representative.
He was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, the Platt-Duetsche Society and the Saddle Club.
Survivors include two sons, Lonnie and Monte, both of Lincoln; three grandchildren; his mother, of Grand Island; a brother, David of Rapid City, S.D.; three sisters, Shirley (Mrs. Bill) Stockton of Kansas City, Kan., Barbara (Mrs. Don) Young of Papillion and Becky (Mrs. Larry) Weak of Springfield; and a special friend, Sue Anderson of North Platte.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Ricky; and his father.
Keith Franke
Keith R. Franke, 77, of Grand Island died Monday, June 29, 1998, at St. Francis Memorial Health Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. John Douglas Russell will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Hospice Program, St. Pauls Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Franke was born on Aug. 26, 1920, at Pleasanton to John and Dora (Reiseland) Franke. He was educated in Wood River and graduated from Wood River High School in 1937 as valedictorian. He worked for various area farmers growing up. He went to work for the railroad in 1940 in Los Angeles and Grand Island.
He married
Gertrude Opp on Jan. 16, 1944, at Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island. He worked for National Cash Register for 25 years as an accountant and office administrator. He then started Franke's Laundrorama and operated it until 1997.
He was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, the Liederkranz and the Eagles. He enjoyed cars, golfing and bowling.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Steve Franke of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a daughter, Sherry (Mrs. Bernard) Geis of Leawood, Kan.; four grandchildren; and one brother, Robert Franke of Grand Island.
Sallymae Hawkins
Sallymae Hawkins, 80, of 9 Navajo Drive died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, at St. Francis Skilled Nursing Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Don Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m., with a rosary service at 7 p.m., Thursday at the church.
Kleine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hawkins was born on May 24, 1918, to August and Katherine (Persak) Stenka. She grew up and was educated in Loup City.
She married
Joe Baker on Jan. 26, 1933, at Loup City. They farmed near Loup City and Ashton. They moved to Ravenna several years before Mr. Baker died.
She married
Francis V. Hawkins on Dec. 30, 1967, at Ravenna. They lived south of Mason City and at Ravenna, Kearney and Litchfield before settling in Grand Island in 1970.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Rosary Sodality of St. Josaphat's Catholic Church at Loup City.
Survivors include her husband, Francis; three sons, Donald Baker of Columbus, Larry Baker of Grand Island and Rick Baker of Plano, Texas; two daughters, Delores (Mrs. Alvin) Slobaszewski of Rockville and Jane Chambers of Grand Island; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Pauline Eurek of Loup City.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Louie Stenka; and two sisters, Helen Eurek and Frances Mandyk.
Alfred Olsen
Alfred T. Olsen, 81, of Grand Island died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at his home.
Services are pending with Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
John Collins
LINCOLN -- John E. Collins, 89, of Lincoln died Monday, June 29, 1998, at Gramarcy Hill Retirement Home in Lincoln.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Island. The Rev. Larry Nothstine will officiate.
Memorials are suggested to the Wood River Methodist Church or the Wood River Ball Association.
Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Collins was born on Dec. 1, 1908, at Meadow Grove to Andrew and Klulu (Rouse) Collins. He graduated from Meadow Grove High School in 1927.
He married
M. Marie Nelson in 1931 at O'Neil. He worked for Standard Oil in Winside from 1929 to 1939, then returned to Meadow Grove.
He moved to Wood River in 1942 and worked as a guard at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. He purchased a gas station in 1947 and retired in 1969. The couple moved to Lincoln in 1996.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Patsy (Mrs. Scott) Moore of Lincoln, Betty (Mrs. George) Halbeisen of Lake St. Lewis, Mo., and Nancy (Mrs. Gene) Collins of Gonzales, Texas; two sons, John of Joshua, Texas, and Dan of Tucson, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth Botsford of Meadow Grove.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters.
Mabel Fastenau
BERTRAND -- Mabel Fastenau, 90, of Bertrand died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, in the Bertrand Nursing Home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hope Lutheran Church in Smithfield. The Rev. Kevin Mackey will officiate. Burial will be in Hope Lutheran cemetery in Gosper County.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Sandstrom Funeral Home in Bertrand.
Mrs. Fastenau was born on Jan. 1, 1908, on a farm south of Smithfield in Gosper County to August Peter and Minnie May (Wahl) Lavene. She attended rural Detenbeck District 12 School south of Smithfield on Turkey Creek.
She married
Fred Fastenau on Oct. 27, 1927, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They lived on a farm four miles north of Bertrand, which his father homesteaded in 1892. They lived there until March 1967, when they moved into Bertrand.
She was an active, lifelong member of Hope Lutheran Church. She established Junior Lutherans, was active in the Bertrand Senior Center and was a past president of Ladies Aid.
She loved to travel.
Survivors include three daughters, Wauneta (Mrs. Samuel) Stroup of Holdrege, Rogene (Mrs. Robert) Stroup of Dannebrog and Loretta (Mrs. LeRoy) Kuck of Bertrand; one son, Keith Fastenau of Bertrand; 14 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Valva (Mrs. Don) York of Joplin, Mo., and Rosella (Mrs. Eugene) Wilken of Bertrand; a brother, Paul Lavene of Bertrand.
Her husband died in 1987. She was preceded in death by a great-grandson; three sisters, Ethel, Ruth and Myrtle; and three brothers, Albert, Lloyd and George.
