Clifford Barnes
CLARKS -- Clifford Barnes, 83, of Clarks died Friday, May 8, 1998, at Aurora Memorial Community Care.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Clarks Methodist Church. The Rev. LaQuita McKibbins will officiate. Burial will be in Pierce Chapel cemetery near Clarks.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.
Dale Philbrick
ORD -- Dale Allen Philbrick, 81, of Ord died Thursday, May 7, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Mr. Philbrick was cremated.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Ord Christian Church. The Rev. Michael Chase will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars at the church. A private inurnment will be at the Ord City Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Philbrick was born on March 8, 1917, at the family farmstead northeast of Ord to Dudley and Julia (Spiedel) Philbrick. He was educated at Dry Cedar Country School and worked on the family farm.
He married
Wilma Horner on Feb. 19, 1941, at Ord. Six days later, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was in the first group drafted from Ord. He served in the Pacific theater during World War II. He was discharged on Aug. 28, 1945, and returned to Ord.
The couple farmed in Valley County until 1959, when they moved into Ord. He worked as a mechanic and a patrolman, operated his own commercial corn sheller and had a tree service for nearly 30 years in Ord. Mrs. Philbrick died on Aug. 11, 1990.
Mr. Philbrick was a member of the Ord Christian Church and the Ord VFW. He enjoyed model airplanes, guns, making clocks, woodworking, photography, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include one son, Dennis Philbrick of Ord; one daughter, Sharene Mohler of Kearney; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Warren and Robert, both of Ord; and two sisters, Mary (Mrs. Leon) Klanecky of Ord and Barb (Mrs. Ken) Collins of Ord.
Harold Scarborough
ST. PAUL -- Harold F. Scarborough, 89, of St. Paul died Friday, May 8, 1998, at the Howard County Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Rosalie Anderson and Ellen Campbell will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Rose Hill cemetery at Palmer.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the hospital or the church.
Mr. Scarborough was born on Feb. 13, 1909, in the Gage Valley area of Howard County to Charles and Ida (Stone) Scarborough. He attended rural District 73 School in Howard County. Later he farmed with his father and worked for other farmers and neighbors. As a young man, he played on the Gage Valley baseball team and enjoyed attending local games.
He married
Beulah Ross on May 24, 1939, at St. Paul. The couple lived on the family farm in the Gage Valley area until 1948, when they purchased a farm in Merrick County between Palmer and Archer.
In addition to farming, he worked part time for Bahensky Well Drilling and LeRoy Seim Well Drilling. They retired from the farm in 1974 due to poor health and moved into St. Paul.
He enjoyed baseball, farming and traveling. He was especially interested in the World Series.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Eugene of Grand Island; one granddaughter; two great-grandsons; and one sister, Ruby Robinson of Denver.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clifford and Harry; and four sisters, Esther Vincik, Viola Weber, Lottie DeMoss and Alverta Bader.
'Clem' Steines
HASTINGS -- Brother Clemens "Clem" John Steines, O.S.C., 83, died Thursday, May 7, 1998, of renal failure at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion in Hastings.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Crosier Monastery with the prior, the Very Rev. James G. Moeglein, O.S.C., officiating. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home. Further visitation will be from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 8:30 to 10 a.m. Monday at the monastery.
Memorials are suggested to the Crosier Fathers and Brothers of Hastings.
He was born on July 9, 1914, in Rose Creek, Minn., to Mathias A. and Katherine (Hensen) Steines. He attended St. Joseph's Grade School in Stratford, Wis., and Maryhurst Normal in St. Louis. He became a Crosier postulant in Onamia, Minn., in 1933, entered the Crosier novitiate in Hastings in 1934 and made his first profession of vows on Feb. 22, 1935. Brother Clem was one of the founding Crosiers of the monastery in Hastings.
He worked the monastery farms in Hastings, Fort Wayne, Ind., and Onamia, Minn., between 1934 and 1945. He went to school in 1945 and learned to cook. He was in charge of the kitchen at the monastery/seminary in Onamia, Minn., and Fort Wayne, Ind., from 1945 to 1965.
He started to work in the donation office in Onamia in 1965 and came back to Hastings in 1969 to work with the Rev. Leo Shedivy in the donation office. In addition, he was the kitchen manager at Hastings from 1978 to 1986. Brother Clem retired from active work at the monastery in 1986.
Brother Clem was known for his work with the senior citizens at Good Samaritan Village in Hastings and at the Haven Home in Kenesaw. He also did volunteer work with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program in Hastings.
He celebrated his diamond jubilee of religious profession on Feb. 22, 1995.
He is survived by one sister, Dorothy Kolb of Stratford, Wis.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray and the Rev. Aloysius Steines, O.S.C.; and two sisters, Cecilia Adams and Marcella, who died in infancy.
Zella Weldon
ST. EDWARD -- Zella Mae Weldon, 79, of St. Edward died Thursday, May 7, 1998, at Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist-Presbyterian Church in St. Edward. The Rev. Mike McInnis will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in St. Edward.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward.
Mrs. Weldon was born on March 3, 1919, at St. Edward to Edward and Jenny (Hazlitt) Iverson. She was educated at a Boone County school southwest of St. Edward and graduated from St. Edward High School. She worked as a cook at Kiefer's Cafe.
She married
William E. "Bill" Weldon on April 25, 1950, in Omaha. She was a homemaker. She lived in St. Edward her entire life. Her husband died on Oct. 22, 1988.
Mrs. Weldon was a member of the St. Edward United Methodist-Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two sons, Gary Weldon and Ron Weldon, both of St. Edward; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Frank Iverson of Omaha and Richard Iverson of Clay Center.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Everett, Robert, Andy and Leonard Iverson; and one sister, Charolett Iverson.
Kalen Townsend
Kalen Townsend, nine months, infant son of Cory and Leah Townsend of Grand Island died Friday, May 7, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Services are pending with Kleine Funeral Home.
Marv Richardson
FULLERTON -- Marv Richardson, 49, of Fullerton died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Peters Catholic Church. The Rev. Don Cleary will officiate. His body will be donated to the anatomical society following services.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday with a 7 p.m. scripture service followed by Knights of Columbus rosary, all at St. Peters Catholic Church.
Palmer's Funeral Home of Fullerton is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Richardson was born Oct. 10, 1949, to Charles and Janet (Corry) Richardson at Rock Island, Ill. He grew up in Van Buren County, Iowa. He graduated from Harmony High School at Farmington, Iowa, in 1967. He then graduated from Dana College at Blair in 1971.
He married
Susan Jensen on Aug. 14, 1971, at Blair. They lived in Bonaparte, Iowa, where he was associated with the family business, Corry Machine & Tool. In 1989, they moved to Fullerton where he was administrator of the Fullerton Hospital. In 1991, he started working at Behlen in Columbus as management of purchasing until his death.
He enjoyed his family, golf, hunting, fishing and people. He coached girls softball and also played softball. He was a Husker fan.
He was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the Lions Club where he had served as a state director. He was a former first responder and fireman in Iowa and was instrumental in starting Bonaparte Senior Citizen Housing. He served on the Van Buren County Development Association and was a certified purchasing agent and past president of the National Association of Purchasing Management of Central Nebraska, 1997-1998.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Molly of Omaha, Jill of Lincoln, and Heidi and Ellie, both at home; his mother, Janet Richardson of Bonaparte; one brother, Jim of Mount Pleasant, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
