Leah Hyde
Leah M. Hyde, 100, of Grand Island died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Wedgewood Care Center.
Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Richard M. Bacon will officiate.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church.
Mrs. Hyde was born on Dec. 14, 1898, at Callaway to Edgar and Ethel (Douglas) Pinnell.
She married
Leo Hyde in 1922 in Central City. Mr. Hyde died in 1986.
Mrs. Hyde was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church.
Survivors include many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Walter Pinnell; and one sister, Charlotte Phelan.
Mary Bock
RAVENNA -- Mary Bock, 100, of Ravenna died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ravenna with the Rev. Steven Schlund officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church. Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Bock was born on Feb. 14, 1899, at Cummings, Colo., to Frank and Anna (Hoegermeyer) Heermann. She was educated in a rural school.
She married
Louis Bock on Jan. 24, 1924, at Pilger. They lived on a farm southwest of Poole. They moved to Ravenna in May 1967. She moved to the Good Samaritan Center in September 1993.
She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two sons, Leo Bock of Burnsville, Minn., and Eldor Bock of Pleasanton; one daughter, Fern Meyers of Polk; 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one son and one granddaughter.
Donald Christensen
ST. PAUL -- Donald Lee Christensen, 69, of St. Paul died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Bob Paulson will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Grand Island City cemetery with graveside military honors by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Peters Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Christensen was born on Aug. 31, 1929, on a farm northwest of Dannevirke to Sophus and Mary (Holt) Christensen. He attended Howard Country District 35 School and Scotia High School. The family moved to a farm near Dannebrog. He graduated from Dannebrog High School in 1946.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955 on the USS Porterfield. Upon his discharge, he moved to Grand Island and worked as an electrical engineering for the city. He went to work for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. in April 1955.
He married
Mary Lou Brunholtz on Dec. 29, 1955, at Cairo. He continued to work as a lineman in unlocated areas of various communities in Central Nebraska. He was promoted to a located crew in McCook in 1958. On Feb. 1, 1959, he was promoted to installer repairman in St. Paul, where he worked until retiring in February 1992 after 37 years of service.
He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, where he held numerous offices; Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul; Platt-Duetsche; Telephone Pioneers of America; Communication Workers of America No. 7401; Dannevirke cemetery Association; Howard County Extension Council; and American Quarter Horse Association. He had been active in 4-H and Boy Scouts.
He enjoyed camping, fishing, dancing and cards.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Pamela (Mrs. Russell) Douglas of Mayetta, Kan.; two sons, Dr. Michael Christensen of Waterloo and Jeffrey Christensen of St. Paul; six grandchildren; and one brother, Richard Christensen of Dannebrog.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Darlene Robertson.
Carmen Gardner
BROKEN BOW -- Carmen Gardner, 93, of Broken Bow died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at her home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Broken Bow. The Revs. Charles Gregory and George Lee Martin will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Gardner was born on Nov. 2, 1905, in Dale Valley near Merna to Harry and Eudora (Frye) Kellenbarger. She attended Michaele District School.
Her family moved to a farm on Cliff Table west of Merna in 1918, and she attended Pleasant Hill District 117 School through the 10th grade. She attended one year of school in Arnold. The family moved to Broken Bow, where she graduated from high school in 1923.
She worked at the Harry Bangs Photography Studio, for an attorney in Broken Bow and at the Berwyn State Bank.
She married
Harley Herbert Gardner on Oct. 17, 1924, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They lived all their married
life in Broken Bow. They operated City Cab Co. for 20 years, except for two years when they lived and farmed with her parents north of Pleasant Hill.
She was a homemaker and an artist. She played the piano and rode horses.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Broken Bow, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Gen. George A. Custer Chapter, a charter founding member of the Broken Bow Saddle Club, a charter member of the Nebraska Arabian Horse Association, the Sodhouse Society, the Custer County Historical Society and Broken Bow Alumni Association.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Harley and Phillip Keith of Broken Bow; and one sister, Marjorie Farmer of Eureka, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Donovan Kellenbarger; and a sister, Eleanor Horn.
Kermit Hultgren
STROMSBURG -- Kermit F. Hultgren, 94, of Stromsburg died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at York General Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.
Dorothy Kramer
CENTRAL CITY -- Dorothy Huxford Kramer, 91, of Central City died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Litzenberg Long-term Care in Central City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Dorothy Ervin will be the reader. Inurnment will be at a later date.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Kramer was born on Sept. 21, 1907, in Central City to J. Eldon and Leonore Blanche (Chandler) Huxford. She attended District 12 and District 4 schools in Merrick County and graduated from Central City High School in 1926.
She worked in New York City as a model until 1930, when she moved to California. She worked as a secretary for Zanuck Film Studios in Hollywood and as a medical and legal secretary for various offices in California. She retired in the early 1970s.
She graduated with a bachelor of science degree in library science from California State University at North Ridge in 1975. She returned to live in Central City in 1980 and moved to Litzenberg Long-term Care in 1995.
Mrs. Kramer was active in the Senior Citizens Center, was an avid reader and had been a volunteer at Long-term Care from 1980 until moving there. She had numerous collections of a vast variety of items.
She was a member of the Church of Christ, Scientist.
Survivors include seven nephews and one niece, including Chris and Paul Wait of Fullerton.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Bill Huxford; and two sisters, Aline Nielsen and Winona Reid.
