Vernon Shears
BROKEN BOW -- Vernon P. Shears, 89, of Broken Bow died Tuesday, April 13, 1999, at his home.
Services are pending at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
George Stroup
ST. EDWARD -- George Roland Stroup, 80, of St. Edward died Monday, April 12, 1999, at Fullerton Manor.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward. The Rev. William Jacobson will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in St. Edward.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Stroup was born April 13, 1918, in Boone County to Ralph and Minnie (Daigh) Stroup. He received his education at a rural Boone County school in the Bradish area.
He worked as a truck driver for Werner Trucking of St. Edward. He retired from trucking in 1980.
Survivors include two nephews, Ron Van Meter of St. Edward and Darrell Van Meter of O'Neill and two nieces, Donna Doncheski of McAllen, Texas and Mildred (Mrs. Ken) Kinzie of Wilbur.
Deborah Woznick
LOUP CITY -- Deborah J. Woznick, 47, of Loup City died Tuesday, April 13, 1999, at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. The Revs. Reginald Urban and Tom Ryan will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery at Loup City.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City and from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with a 7:30 p.m. wake service there.
Memorials are suggested to American Legion baseball or St. Josaphat's youth.
Mrs. Woznick was born on Aug. 8, 1951, at Denver to Marjorie (Greger) Peterson.
She graduated from Denver West High School in 1969. She then attended the University of Northern Colorado.
She married
Richard "Butch" Woznick on April 27, 1974, at Loup City.
The couple lived in Loup City, where she served as religion education director at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church for six years.
Mrs. Woznick was a member of St. Josaphat's Catholic Church and the local planning commission and a former member of Outward Bound, a recreational group at UNC. She also was an active Girl Scout troop leader.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Paul, Kevin and Richard, all of Loup City; one daughter, Karen of Loup City; and four sisters, Patricia (Mrs. John) Forje of Denver, Kathleen Evans of Las Vegas, Jacqueline Evans of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Diannia Peterson of Los Angeles.
She was preceded in death by her mother.
Evert Nowak
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Evert F. Nowak, 66, of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of St. Paul, died Friday, April 9, 1999, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Nowak was born on Oct. 18, 1932, at St. Paul to Bert and Gertrude (Koslicki) Nowak. He graduated from Elba Consolidated High School in 1950.
After graduation, he joined the United States Navy. He then worked as a computer application analyst for the Federal Reserve System board of governors in Washington, D.C., from 1970 through 1985. He moved to Lakeland, Fla., in 1989.
Survivors include two brothers, Ray Nowak of Elba and Don Nowak of Donald, Ore.; and one sister, Burdette Jacobsen of Elba.
Edgar Stettner
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Edgar Stettner, 86, of Springfield, Mo., died April 3, 1999, at his home.
Services were on April 7 at Greenlawn Funeral Home North in Springfield. The Rev. Andrew Spallek officiated. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Stettner served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his discharge, he farmed and later drove a truck for Bennetts Greenhouse in Springfield, Mo.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Brent; two granddaughters; one sister, Virginia Gilmore of Lees Summit, Mo.; and two brothers, Franklin Stettner of Central City and Dean Stettner of Sidney.
He was preceded in death by one son, Bruce; one grandson; and one sister, Edna Rehrs.
"Corky" Larson
Courtney William "Corky" Larson, 81, of 2811 Circle Drive died Friday, May 28, 1999, at Park Place Nursing Home.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Parkview cemetery in Hastings. The Rev. Howard B. Franzen will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Brand-Wilson Mortuary in Hastings. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Larson was born June 15, 1917, to Robert W. and Olga (Peterson) Larson at Jamestown, N.Y. He grew up in Jamestown and entered the U.S. Navy in 1934, serving until 1938.
He married
Ruth Evelyn "Evy" Sanders in 1940. He worked numerous jobs, retiring from Hastings Regional Center in 1980.
He was a member of Eagles and American Legion, both in Hastings.
He enjoyed gardening and the New York Yankees.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Terry of Hastings; two daughters, Pat Pederson of Hastings and Cyndie Larson of Grand Island; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one brother, Kenneth of Florida.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Robert W. and Billie Ray and one grandaughter.
Kenneth Pugh
Kenneth D. Pugh, 53, of 1621 N. Elm died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Kleine Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the family receiving from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Pugh was born Aug. 5, 1945, to Myron and Mamie (McGinnis) Pugh at Alliance. He lived in Ravenna in his early years, then moved with his family to Alliance, where he attended school. He attended Kearney State College, then moved to Grand Island.
He married
Judi Burmood at Hastings. He worked Hansen Wholesale Co. in sales and delivery, then worked at Wood River Rural High School as a custodian. He worked at Wedgewood as a custodian at the time of his death.
He is a member of the Christian faith.
He enjoyed being with his grandchildren and Nebraska football. He never missed his son Rick's high school and college track meets.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Rick Nickerson of McCook; two daughters, Julie (Mrs. Henry) Mayer and Michelle (Mrs. Dale) Williams of Grand Island; four grandchildren; one brother, Dean Hugh of Grand Island and four sisters, Bonnie (Mrs. Don) Graff and Rosalie (Mrs. Bob) Chrystal, both of Grand Island, Marge (Mrs. Wayne) Clark of Alliance and Delores Guzman of Scottsbluff.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dale and two sisters, Marilyn Musil and Darlene Waldron.
Gary Stobbe
Gary T. Stobbe, 48, 712 W. 13th, died Friday, May 28, 1999, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. Thomas Ryan will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home, with a rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Stobbe was born April 21, 1951, to Eldon and Lillian (Peters) Stobbe at Loup City. He moved with his family to Grand Island in 1952. He attended Grand Island Public Schools, graduating from Senior High in 1969.
He married
Melody Judy on Sept. 19, 1970. He entered the U.S. Army in 1971 and served in Vietnam until his discharge in 1972. After the military, he was a bricklayer and later worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads until his health forced him to retire last year.
Survivors include two sons, Shane Stobbe of Omaha and Brian Stobbe of Central City; three daughters, Stephanie Stobbe of Omaha, Kylie Ward of Greeley and Jaimie Ward of Grand Island; six grandchildren; his mother; three brothers, Ted and Allen, both of Grand Island and Don of Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters, Sheila Krolikowski and Roxie Zoucha, both of Grand Island; and a special friend, Sue Ward of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his father and two infant brothers.
