Everett Quaring
SHELTON -- Everett Quaring, 87, of Shelton died Friday, May 21, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church north of Shelton. The Rev. Jack Heck will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mr. Quaring was born on Feb. 24, 1912, in Buffalo County to Joseph and Anna (Klinkacek) Quaring. He was educated at District 61 School in Buffalo County. He farmed north of Shelton.
He married
Erma L. Moss on Feb. 20, 1940, at Zion Lutheran Church north of Shelton. They lived on a farm north of Shelton.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jerry of Shelton and Darrell of Ravenna; four grandchildren; two sisters, Mabel Waddington and Elsie Moss, both of Cairo, and one brother, Emmett of Dannebrog.
Vina West
LOUP CITY -- Vina West, 90, of Loup City died Friday, May 21, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Arrangements are pending at Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna.
Leo Bowlby
YORK -- Leo Bowlby, 92, of York, formerly of Hordville, died Friday, May 21, 1999, at Hearthstone Nursing Home in York.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora. The Rev. Al Duminy will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
Mr. Bowlby was born on Nov. 14, 1906, on a farm in Loup County to Joseph and Maude (Greathouse) Bowlby. He grew up in rural Loup County and attended a country school there.
He married
Fern Lytle on July 29, 1930, in Ord. They lived in Burwell, where he farmed and ranched until 1945. They then moved to Pueblo, Colo., for one year. In 1946, they moved to Hordville, where they operated Bowlby's Café until 1975, when they retired and moved to Aurora.
He enjoyed gardening in his spare time.
Mrs. Bowlby died in 1989, and Mr. Bowlby lived with two of his daughters, Beth Andreasen and Luana Wall, for a time before moving the Hearthstone in York.
Survivors include four daughters, Beth Andreasen of Bradshaw, Garnet Carlson of Escalon, Calif., Mildred Nadeau of Aurora, Colo., and Luana Wall of Aurora; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Erma of Westminster, Colo.
Other than his wife, he was preceded in death by a grandchild; a great-grandchild; three brothers, Arthur, Glen and Eldon; and one sister, Marie.
Robert Costello
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Robert Leo Costello, 85, of Greensboro, N.C., formerly of Grand Island, died May 7, 1999.
Memorials are suggested to the Hospice at Greensboro, N.C.
Mr. Costello was born in Grand Island to Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence P. Costello. He graduated from St. Mary's Central Catholic in 1931. He attended Georgetown University and graduated from Catholic University of America in 1939.
He moved to Greensboro in 1941 to work for A.M. Pullen and Co. Returning to Greensboro after service in the U.S. Army, he opened the certified public accounting firm of R.L. Costello and Co. in 1949. He retired from Costello, Hill and Co. in 1989.
He was a charter member and former treasurer of the Summit Rotary Club and a Paul Harris fellow. He served on the Hospice at Greensboro board of directors from 1988 to 1992 and was president from 1990 to 1992.
He was also active with the American Red Cross, served as an officer of the National Conference of Christians and Jews and was on the advisory council of Maryfield Nursing Home.
Survivors include his wife, Maria Briscuso Costello; four sons, Dr. Lawrence Costello of Frederick, Md., Robert Costello Jr. and Kevin Costello, both of Greensboro, and Stephen Costello of Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Mary Anne Costello of New York City and Patricia Costello of Orlando, Fla.; four grandchildren; and a brother, James of Granite City, Ill.
Ethel J. Dettman
MARION, Iowa -- Ethel J. Dettman, 64, of Marion, Iowa, formerly of Central City, died Friday, May 21, 1999, at Mercy Medical Center following a short illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in her name.
Mrs. Dettman was born on March 9, 1935, at Hordville to McKinley and Faye (Campbell) Land.
She married
Louis E. Dettman on Oct. 25, 1952, in Central City. She worked at Eagle Summit in patient services for many years, retiring in 1997.
Survivors include two daughters, Cindy (Mrs. Rodney) White of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Lou (Mrs. Roy) Dettman of Marion, Iowa; one son, Robert of Hannibal, Mo.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Wendell Land of Grand Island; and five sisters, Maxine Beckstrom of Stromsburg, Donna Spires of Exeter, Betty Person of Grand Island, Jeanelle Britton of Plymouth, Ind., and Patricia Gottuso of Simi Valley, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Alan Dale and Michael; three brothers and three sisters.
Gertrude Fricke
Gertrude E. Fricke, 77, of Grand Island died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at Lakeview Rehab/Nursing Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Worldwide Church of God in Grand Island. The Rev. Everett McDowell will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. CDT Monday in the Ogallala cemetery with Don Fricke officiating.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Fricke was born on July 3, 1921, at North Loup to Glenn and Irena (Young) Trump. She was educated and grew up in the Comstock area.
She married
Carl E. Fricke Sr. on July 3, 1939, at Brewster. The couple lived at Comstock for 35 years before moving to Ogallala in 1963. Mr. Fricke died in 1969. Mrs. Fricke moved to Grand Island in 1970.
She was a member of the Worldwide Church of God and the Spokeswoman Club. She played the Autoharp and enjoyed gardening and music.
Survivors include two daughters, Charlotte (Mrs. Harry) Carey and Shirley Osborne, both of Grand Island; one son, Carl E. Fricke Jr. of Grand Island; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Charles Trump of Lodgepole, Robert Trump of Rapid City, S.D., and Everett Trump of Ord; and one sister, Betty Massara of Pompano Beach, Fla.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by one grandson; four brothers, Duane Trump, Darrel Trump, Cecil Trump and Eugene Trump; and a baby sister.
Betty Koch
BANNING, Calif. -- Betty Jean Koch, 72, of Banning, Calif., formerly of Grand Island and St. Paul, died May 14, 1999, at her home.
Aaron Cremation and Burial Services of Loma Linda, Calif., was in charge of arrangements.
She was born on Jan. 28, 1927, at St. Paul. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Ronald Wondra; one daughter, Rona Sheehan of Grand Island; and four grandchildren.
Tracy Rathbun
DENVER -- Memorial services for Tracy E. Rathbun, 74, of Denver will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
The Rev. James B. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Mr. Rathbun died on Feb. 16, 1999, after a lengthy illness. He was cremated.
Mr. Rathbun was born on June 30, 1924, in Ord to Mel and Elsie (Haught) Rathbun. He grew up in Ord and attended school there, graduating from Ord High School in 1942. His family moved to Rapid City, S.D., in 1955. He worked for Johnson Machine and retired from J.C. Penney's.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Madden and Susan (Mrs. Richard) Rust, both of Denver; five grandchildren; one sister, Genevieve Pierson of Arcadia; and one brother, Richard Rathbun of Salinas, Calif.
