Irwin Underberg
Irwin O. Underberg, 81, of Grand Island, formerly of Norfolk and Broken Bow, died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Norfolk with the Rev. George Tarsis officiating. Burial will be in Crown Hill cemetery in Madison with Masonic Rites by Mosaic Lodge 55 AF & AM.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Home for Funerals in Norfolk.
Mr. Underberg was born July 23, 1917, in Ceresco to Ross and Mattie (Davis) Underberg. He graduated from Norfolk High School.
He married
Leota Auble on May 4, 1937, in Papillion. They moved to Ord where Mr. Underberg started learning the watch makers trade at Aubles Jewelry. He then enrolled in the Elgin Watch Makers School in Elgin, Ill. and worked for the company. He also played for dance bands on the weekends.
During World War II he was in the Army Air Force and was a factory inspector for Army Aircraft precision instruments in Waukegan, Ill.
After leaving the service, he returned to Madison and opened Underberg's Jewelry and Appliance in 1946, a store he owned and operated with his wife.
In 1951 the couple moved to Broken Bow where they operated Underberg's Jewelry. In 1960 they moved to Norfolk where Mr. Underberg worked for Tom's Music House selling pianos and organs. He also entertained with his music at many social events in the Norfolk area.
Mr. Underberg moved in the past year to the Grand Island Veterans Home.
He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Norfolk, a 50-year member of the Elks Lodge, a past Exalted Ruler of the Norfolk Lodge, a 50-year member of Mosaic Lodge 55 AF & AM of Norfolk, Sesostris Shrine Temple of Lincoln, American Legion, Rotary and Cosmopolitans, and other civic service organizations.
Survivors include a daughter, Connie (Mrs. Gene) VanWie of Grand Island; a son, William of Grand Haven, Mich.; a brother, Dean Underberg of Oconomowoc, Wis.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and an infant sister.
'Grandpa' Meyer
Alfred "Grandpa" Meyer, 87, of Grand Island died Thursday, May 13, 1999, as a result of a traffic accident north of Grand Island.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church. The Rev. Daniel Bremer will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Meyer was born on May 31, 1911, at Barbrake, Hanover, Germany, to Herman and Anna (Bormann) Meyer. He came to live in the United States with his parents and five brothers and sisters in 1913. They landed at Ellis Island. He was raised in Burwell and attended a country school.
He married
Evangeline Schwarz on March 30, 1933, at Grand Island. He became a naturalized citizen on Jan. 11, 1943, in Grand Island. He lived in the Palmer area most of his married
life. They moved to a farm south of Grand Island in 1963 and into Grand Island in 1976. He continued to farm until his death.
He enjoyed playing cards. He was a member of the Platt-Duetsche Society and Grace Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two sons, Dennis Meyer of Central City and Paul Meyer of Alda; two daughters, Delores (Mrs. Marion) Omel and Charlene (Mrs. Clarence) Hiegel, both of Grand Island; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two brothers, Martin Meyer of Palmer and Herman Meyer of Doniphan; and three sisters, Rosa Hoback of Grand Island, Sophia Kinsey of Mineral Wells, Texas, and Freida DeHart of Lakewood, Colo.
His wife died in 1988. He also was preceded in death by one son, LeRoy; one grandson; one great-grandson; three brothers; and three sisters.
Margaret Chramosta
RAVENNA -- Margaret Chramosta, 77, of Ravenna died Saturday, May 15, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with the Rev. Rod Pruss officiating. Christian wake services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in the St. Wenceslaus cemetery south of Ravenna.
Rasmussen Mortuary of Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Earl Ramm
ALBION -- Earl W. Ramm, 66, of Albion died Friday, May 14, 1999, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion with the Rev. Brian Bergum officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Albion with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 162.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Mr. Ramm was born May 10, 1933, in Pilger to William and Edith (Weichenthal) Ramm. He received his elementary education at Pilger Public Schools and graduated from Pilger High School in 1951.
He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1952 and worked as an airplane maintenance programmer. He was stationed at various bases in California, Kansas, Iceland, Nevada, and New Hampshire. He was honorably discharged in 1962.
He married
Marilyn Fink on April 10, 1953, in Wausa.
Mr. Ramm was instrumental in opening the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Callaway and served as the first administrator there. In 1964 the family moved to Albion where Mr. Ramm worked as administrator of the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center for 12 years.
In 1981 he began working as the conservation technician at Lower Loup Nebraska Public Resource District. He retired in 1996.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of Albion; two daughters, Sandy Cloeter (Mrs. Steve) of Albion and Linda Cloeter (Mrs. Dennis) of Duncan; four grandchildren; and one half-sister.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert Ramm.
'Art' Rowedder
ANSLEY -- Arthur "Art" Rowedder, 69, of Ansley died Saturday, May 15, 1999, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services are pending with Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Emily Sands
BROKEN BOW -- Emily V. Sands, 102, of Broken Bow died Friday, May 14, 1999, at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Govier Brothers Mortuary Chapel in Broken Bow. Dr. Charles Gregory will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.
Memorials have been established to the Heart Association or to the donor's choice.
Miss Sands was born Dec. 10, 1896, in the Custer Center community near Broken Bow to Ben and Eva (Pershall) Sands. She attended the Tappan Valley country school, and at age 15 moved to Dedham, Wis. She also attended business school in Minnesota.
She worked at an electric company in Pine City, Minn., and later transferred to Amery, Wis., where she lived for 12 years. She later moved to Oakland, Calif., where she lived for 33 years, and retired in 1973.
She returned to Broken Bow in 1987.
Miss Sands enjoyed gardening, sewing, needlework and ceramics.
Survivors include one brother, Gerald Sands of Denver, Colo.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Frank; and one sister, Belle Southwick.
Tony Savage
CENTRAL CITY -- Tony S. Savage, 90, of Central City, died Saturday, May 15, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
