Robert Burns
MASON CITY -- Robert G. "Jeff" Burns, 72, of Mason City died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Mason City. The Revs. John Lewis and Henry Duerksen will officiate. Burial will be in the Mason City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the Alzheimer's Association.
Mr. Burns was born on July 4, 1926, at Mason City to Glen and Edith (Smith) Burns. He lived in the Mason City area all his life. He attended country grade school and graduated from Mason City High School in 1944.
He worked on the railroad and at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant in Grand Island. He entered the U.S. Army in December 1945 and served most of his time in Korea. After his discharge from the service in 1947, he joined his older brother, Joel "Ike" Burns, in the filling station and tank wagon business in Mason City.
He married
Vivian Fox on June 17, 1950, and they lived at Mason City. Mr. Burns farmed and raised livestock.
Mr. Burns was a member of the Mason City school board for more than 25 years, serving most of that time as president. He was a member of the Algernon Township Board, a lifetime member of Legion Post 142 at Mason City and a member of the Broken Bow Elks Lodge.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Steve Burns of Alexandria, Va., Byron Burns of Litchfield and Mark Burns of Kearney; two daughters, Theodocia Fitch of Des Moines, Iowa, and Kimberley Burns of Houston; three grandchildren; and one sister, Pat Nelson of Broken Bow.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Joel "Ike" Burns; and one sister, Shirley Cox.
Doug Maw Sr.
FULLERTON -- Doug Maw Sr., 55, of Fullerton died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, as a result of a traffic accident near Osceola.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton. The Rev. Timothy Wagner will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Marie Strong
ST. PAUL -- Marie V. Strong, 89, of St. Paul died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at Integrated Health Services in Palmer.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Martha Voigt will officiate. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Monday in Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Island.
Visitation will be prior to services Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family or to Integrated Health Services.
Mrs. Strong was born on Feb. 3, 1910, at Weissert to Nels and Marie (Johnson) Johnson. She grew up in Broken Bow and attended school there, graduating from in 1925.
She married
George Dudley on Sept. 24, 1926, at Omaha. The couple lived in Broken Bow and moved to Grand Island in 1943. She worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant during World War II. She then worked as an interior designer at Geer Mobile Homes in Grand Island until her retirement. She moved to Dannevirke in 1980 and to Palmer in 1996.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Grand Island and a church circle.
Survivors include one daughter, Katharine (Mrs. Eldon) Donohue of St. Paul; three grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Andrew Johnson of Grand Island.
Her husband died in 1961. She also was preceded in death by one son, George Jr.; three brothers, James, Arthur and Hank Johnson; and three sisters, Emma Govier, Dora Okerstrom and Esther Majer.
Dennis Krewson
OMAHA -- Dennis S. Krewson, 47, of Omaha, formerly of Shelton, died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at University of Nebraska Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital in Omaha.
Services are pending with O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home of Wood River.
Charles Kuncl III
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Charles F. Kuncl III, 66, of Spartanburg, S.C., died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, in Spartanburg.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Mount Hope cemetery in Scotia.
Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Bert McGee
Bert McGee, 95, of Grand Island died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at St. Francis Memorial Health Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested Trinity United Methodist Church, the Make A Wish Foundation or the donor's choice.
Mr. McGee was born Dec. 14, 1903, at Omaha to Hiram and Addie (Decker) McGee. He grew up and received his education in the Sargent area.
He married
Agnes Kment on Dec. 24, 1929, at Sioux City, Iowa. They lived in the Grand Island area since 1943. Mr. McGee became employed by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1938 and retired as an engineer in 1969.
Mr. McGee was an avid baseball fan. As a young man, he was a catcher for a number of traveling teams. He began coaching when he no longer played. He remembered following the home run record quest of Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. In recent years he enjoyed following the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs.
He was affiliated with Trinity United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, the Eagles and the Platt-Duetsche Society.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Donna (Mrs. Jack) Madsen of Las Vegas, Nev., Pat (Mrs. Robert) Wilson of Edmond, Okla. and Anne (Mrs. Ted) Kelsey of Rockville; two sons, M.E. "Bud" McGee of Denver, Colo. and Dennis McGee of Grand Island; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Clinton MCGee of Berlin, Wis., Keith McGee of Pedersen, Iowa, Roy MCGee of Columbus and Paul McGee of Bloomfield; and three sisters, Linda Lindner of Aurora, Martha Smith of Sioux City, Iowa and Mary Slegal of Julesberg, Colo.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Elsie; four brothers, Earl, Clyde, Ben and Merle; and an infant granddaughter.
Verna Bosley
HASTINGS -- Verna Marie Bosley, 97, of Hastings died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Hastings. The Rev. Earl Higgins will officiate. Additional services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Palisade United Methoist Church at Palisade. Burial will be in Palisade Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services Friday at the First United Methodist Church. Further visitation will be one hour prior to services Saturday at First Palisade united Methodist Church at Palisade.
Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings and Herrmann Funeral Home of Palisade are in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Auxiliary-child welfare program.
Mrs. Bosley was born Dec. 15, 1901, in a sod house in Hayes County to Doctor Franklin and Nellie Mae (Smith) Gruver. After graduating from Palisade High School, she attended Grand Island Business School for two years.
She married
Charles M. Bosley on Jan. 1, 1920. She moved from Palisade to Hastings in 1975. She was a homemaker and a member of Palisade United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, American Legion Auxiliary for 76 years and 8 & 40.
Survivors include one daughter, Nadine B. McCreary of Loveland, Colo.; two sons, Robert C. Bosley of McCook and Dr. Warren G. Bosley of Grand Island; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and one granddaughter.
