Kenneth Nicholson
LINCOLN -- Kenneth J. Nicholson, 55, of Lincoln died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at St. Elizabethis Regional Medical Center in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Plains Baptist Church in Lincoln. The Rev. Dan L. Inman will officiate. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Greeley Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday at Metcalf Funeral Home in Lincoln. Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mr. Nicholson was born on April 2, 1943, at Clarksburg, W.Va., to Robert and Nell (Binegar) Nicholson. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.
He married
Judith Wagner. He worked for Lincoln General Hospital as a stationary engineer for 17 years and Meadow Gold for seven years.
He was a member of Plains Baptist Church in Lincoln.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Kenneth Jr. of Lincoln; and four sisters, Ethel Mae Johnson of Greeley, Doris (Mrs. Dwight) Johnson of Albion and Iris Meadows and Ardis Wellington, both of Lincoln.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his foster parents, Rester and Eva Burrows.
'Bob' Lewis
ALEXANDRIA, La. -- Robert Allen "Bob" Lewis, 81, of Alexandria, La., formerly of Burwell, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, in Dugspur, Va.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Church in Alexandria. Graveside services were on Monday at Dickens cemetery in Carroll County, Va. Hillsville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1115 provided military rites.
Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the family.
John Kramer and Son Funeral Home in Alexandria was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Lewis was born on Sept. 4, 1917, in Nemaha to Ben and Gladys Rose (Williams) Lewis. His family later moved to Burwell, where he was raised.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran and had been a salesman for Southern Chevrolet in Alexandria for 23 years.
He served as a Mason and Shriner.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria; one son, Robert Ben Lewis of Alexandria; two daughters, Suzanne L. Randow of Alexandria and Christine L. Wiggins of Dugspur, Va.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
William Hoffer
William M. Hoffer, 68, of 2828 Brentwood Blvd., died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at Wedgewood Care Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. C. Roger Nelson officiating.
Mr. Hoffer's body will be cremated. His ashes will be interred in the church columbarium.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church or St. Francis Hospice.
Mr. Hoffer was born on Aug. 13, 1930, at Lancaster, Pa., to Paul and Frances (Maley) Hoffer. He grew up in Millersville, Pa., and graduated from Penn Manor High School in 1948. He attended Fullerton Junior College in Fullerton, Calif., and graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering.
He married
Carol Pulley in Downey, Calif., in 1952 and worked for Douglas Aircraft in California before returning to Lancaster, Pa. He worked there at the DeWalt division of Black and Decker and later at Sperry New Holland.
He maintained his membership in Charles M. Howell Masonic Lodge No. 469 in Millersville, Pa., and in the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Lancaster. For many years, he was an active member and office holder in the Society for the Advancement of Management and other professional organizations.
He married
Ann (Brenneman) Harris in 1974.
In Lancaster, he was active at St. James Episcopal Church and served on the vestry. He managed the annual prime rib dinner served to hundreds during the city's Harvest Days.
In 1980, the family moved to Columbus, Neb., where he helped establish the Ford New Holland plant there. He was named production manager at Ford New Holland in Grand Island in 1982, a position he held until he was disabled in 1987.
He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church. He served on the board of directors for the Salvation Army and was a volunteer with the Literacy Council.
Survivors include his wife, Ann; three sons, Paul of Millersville, Pa., Joseph of Chicago, Ill., and Kevin of Grand Island; three grandchildren; one brother, Edward of Easton, Pa.; two sisters, Elizabeth Cartin of Annapolis, Md., and Jonne Fleming of Middleton, Wis.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Robin Lea Michitsch; and a sister, Barbara Koeng.
Nellie Applegarth
BROKEN BOW -- Nellie V. Applegarth, 96, of Broken Bow, formerly of Comstock, died Saturday, February 13, 1999, at the Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Rhoad Funeral Home Chapel in Sargent. Fred Cram will officiate. Burial will be in the Douglas Grove cemetery at Comstock.
There will be no visitation. The casket will be open for viewing before services.
Memorials are suggested at the family's choice.
Eleanor Nice
BROKEN BOW -- Eleanor Nice, 88, of Broken Bow died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Robert L. Hoeft officiating. Burial will be in Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 8 a.m. to service time Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to Our Savior Lutheran Church in Broken Bow.
Mrs. Nice was born on March 26, 1910, at Murdock to Charles E. and Johanna (Woitzel) Stroy. She grew up at Murdock and attended two years of college in Lincoln. After her schooling, she moved to western Nebraska to teach.
She married
Aaron D. Nice on Dec. 27, 1933, at Custer, S.D. He worked for the railroad, and they lived in several small towns. They moved to Broken Bow in 1943. She worked as a clerk at the Custer County Courthouse in Broken Bow for 23 years. Mr. Nice died in August 1966.
She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Broken Bow and the Jolly Coffee Club.
Survivors include one son, Roger Nice of Fayetteville, N.C.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Hubert Stroy of Peoria, Ill., and Elbert Stroy of Murdock.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, DeLane Nice; one brother, Walter; and two sisters, Amanda and Irene.
Leendert Vermeulen Jr.
Leendert "Leo" Vermeulen Jr., 83, of 3013 W. Stolley Park Road No. 79 died Dec. 26, 1998, at his daughter's home in Wichita, Kan.
Mr. Vermeulen was cremated.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. C. Roger Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery.
Downing and Lahey Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Lions Club, the church or the Salvation Army.
Mr. Vermeulen was born on July 15, 1915, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Leendert and Nicoline Vermeulen. He lived in Indonesia and the Netherlands. He graduated from the Academy of Liberal Arts in 1936 with a degree in architecture.
He worked for Clayton and Associates, Benjamin Engineering and the Hall County Roads Department. He lived in Grand Island for 37 years.
He was an active member of the Lions Club for many years and served as deputy district governor. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. He was also a member of the Platt-Duetsche Society and the Grand Island Saddle Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Marijke Klahn of Wichita, Kan.; one son, Hank Vermeulen of Doylestown, Pa.; three grandchildren; and a special friend, Charleen Frerichs of Hildreth.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maria; his brother, Pieter Johannas; and a sister, Johanna Nicoline.
