Emma Senkbile
CENTRAL CITY -- Emma Darlene Senkbile, 58, of Central City died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at Park Place Health Care and Rehab Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Charles Pollard will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
DeWitt Whaley
KEARNEY -- DeWitt T. Whaley, 75, of Kearney died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at his home.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Kearney Church of Christ. The Rev. Ed Lee will officiate. O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to hospice or the church.
Mr. Whaley was born on Dec. 1, 1923, in Trinidad, Colo., to Guy and Laura (Elliot) Whaley. He graduated from high school in 1942.
He entered the Navy in June 1942 and served during World War II. After returning to Kearney, he moved houses for Grass and Sons. Other occupations included working five years for Nims Skelly Service and 20 years for the Northwestern Public Service Co.
He married
Willa Jean Brisbin on Oct. 10, 1948. He was a member of the Church of Christ and served as an elder for several years.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ken of Kearney and Tim of Waverly; one daughter, Sandra of Kearney; four granddaughters; one great-grandson; four brothers, Edward of Kearney, Harry of Napa, Ore., Emory of Stockton, Calif., and Robert of Grand Island; and one sister, Margorie Carmen of Imperial.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Virginia Downing
ELM CREEK -- Virginia L. "Ginger" Downing, 73, of Elm Creek died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Holdrege.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Kearney Cemetery. The Rev. Dan Cleveland will officiate.
There will be no visitation. O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Elm Creek Fire and Rescue Unit.
Mrs. Downing was born on May 30, 1925, at home in Overton to John W. and Elizabeth (Cross) Wilson. She lived in the Overton and Elm Creek areas all her life and graduated from Overton High School.
She married
Merle Wells on Jan. 22, 1944, in Overton. Mr. Wells died in March 1966.
She married
Harry Downing on March 6, 1972, in Kearney. She worked as a waitress and cook in restaurants and farmed in the Elm Creek and Overton area.
She enjoyed crossword puzzles, sewing, fishing, camping, boating and reading the newspaper.
Survivors include four daughters, Kathy Gene (Mrs. Harry) Spotanski of Loup City, Wilma "Lee" (Mrs. Michael) Cunningham of Orange, Calif., Elizabeth Wells of Elm Creek and Susan (Mrs. Darren) Anderson of Holdrege; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, George Wilson of Elm Creek; and one sister, Jackie Friederich of Herndon, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husbands.
Martha Glebe
HARVARD -- Martha M. Glebe, 93, of Harvard, formerly of Scotia, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at Harvard Rest Haven.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Brand Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings. The Rev. Tom Murray will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and until service time Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Scotia ambulance or Nebraska Diabetes Association.
Mrs. Glebe was born on Oct. 15, 1905, at Scotia to Louis and Christina (Suck) Wegner. She grew up on the family farm and was educated at a rural school.
She married
Arthur Meyer on March 18, 1926, and they farmed in the Fish Creek area until they moved to Scotia in 1947. Mr. Meyer died on Aug. 20, 1948.
She married
Edward Glebe on July 19, 1954, and they lived at Blue Hill. Mr. Glebe died on Aug. 11, 1975.
She moved to Good Samaritan Village in Hastings on June 1, 1976 and moved to Harvard Rest Haven in 1995.
She was a member of the Salem Evangelical Church in Fish Creek east of Scotia and played the piano for the services there for many years. She attended the All Saints Chapel in Hastings and did many hours of volunteer work. She enjoyed playing cards and playing the piano.
Survivors include one stepdaughter, Darlene (Mrs. LaVerne) Cornelius of Omaha; one stepson, Donald Glebe of Houston; seven step grandchildren; nine step great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ella Kraus of Pleaston, Calif.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Bill, Henry, Dan and George Wegner; and two sisters, Esther Dunkelburger and Ann Smith.
Norman Lempke
Norman T. Lempke, 77, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Don Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery at St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., with a vigil recited at 7 p.m., Friday at the church.
Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Emily Niemann
Emily L. Niemann, 72, of 320 N. Carey died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with the Revs. Don Larmore and Marty Egging officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m., with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. and a Scripture rosary at 7 p.m., Friday at Kleine Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Niemann was born on March 28, 1926, at Albia, Iowa, to Gus and Edith (Coons) Anderson. She received her education there.
She worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant and took Aunt Mary Club photographs at Lumbard-Leschinsky Studio in Grand Island. She served school lunches at Walnut Junior High.
She married
Joseph Niemann on Aug. 25, 1947, at Grand Island. They lived in Grand Island.
She liked helping others and enjoyed her poodles.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Robert of Grand Island; two daughters, Margo (Mrs. Tom) Galles and Pam (Mrs. Jay) Harders, both of Grand Island; eight grandchildren; and three brothers, John Anderson of Grand Island, Gus Anderson of Alma and Owen Anderson of Oxford.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank and Max Anderson and an infant brother; and one sister, Betty.
'Doug' Lewis
BURWELL -- John Douglas "Doug" Lewis, 74, of Burwell died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Burwell with the Rev. Roger Gillming officiating. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Ulysses cemetery in Ulysses, Kan.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Post 298 Chair Lift Fund in Burwell or Nebraska Christian School in Central City.
