Alfred Derner Jr.
BURWELL -- Alfred J. "Butch" or "Budge" Derner Jr., 85, of Burwell died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burwell. The Rev. Bernard Berger will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell.
Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Burwell Ambulance Supply Fund or the family.
Mr. Derner was born on March 1, 1913, in Butte to Alfred Sr. and Katherine (Tiefenthaler) Derner. He grew up and was educated in the Butte area.
He married
Vera M. Stahlecker of Naper on April 21, 1938, in Burke, S.D. They farmed in the Butte area until moving to a ranch west of Burwell in 1943. Upon retiring in 1974, they lived in town. They moved to Parkview Plaza in 1993.
He enjoyed fishing, camping and playing cards. He served on the Cail school board for many years. He was also an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burwell.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Ronald of St. Paul, Donald of Burwell and Dennis of Bartlett; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Theresa Stoltenberg of Atkinson.
She was preceded in death by one great-grandchild, one brother and seven sisters.
John Krueger
ST. EDWARD -- John S. Krueger, 83, of St. Edward died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Edward Catholic Church. The Rev. Edward Gill will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesday at the Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward, with a 7:30 p.m. wake. Visitation will resume from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Krueger was born June 20, 1915, on a farm south of Ithaca to John A. and Gladys L. (Soland) Krueger. He received his elementary education at School District 102 in Saunders County. He then attended 9th and 10th grades at School District 50 at Ithaca.
From 1934 to 1937, he owned and operated a trucking business in Ithaca. He also helped his father farm. In 1938 he moved to a farm east of Petersburg. In 1941 he moved to Los Angeles, Calif., and was employed at the Douglas Aircraft Factory in Santa Monica, Calif.
On Aug. 8, 1942, he married
Bernice L. Koenig in Los Angeles, Calif. They moved to Ithaca and farmed land at the Mead Ordnance Plant at Mead. They moved to Boone County in 1947 where they farmed in the St. Edward and Albion areas until 1950 when they moved into St. Edward.
He did custom machine work and raised livestock. In 1983, he retired but continued raising livestock. Mrs. Krueger died Dec. 29, 1990.
He was a member of the St. Edward Catholic church and the St. Edward Saddle Club. He enjoyed horses, fishing and hunting and working on old gas engines.
Survivors include three daughters, Sheila (Mrs. Martin) Vetick of Grand Island, Marilee (Mrs. Terry) Clark of Fort Collins, Colo. and Caroline Campbell of Omaha; two sons, Ken Krueger of Omaha and Marvin Krueger of Grand Island; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mona (Mrs. Clifford) Hansen of Los Angeles, Calif., Donna (Mrs. Jack) Cruise of Houston, Texas, and Polly (Mrs. Frank) Kiolbasa of Grand Island; and four brothers, Keith of Houston, Texas, Raymond of Omaha, Jim of Houston, Texas, and Bob of Dallas, Texas.
Marcia McClay
CENTRAL CITY -- Marcia Lois McClay, 85, of Central City died at Community Care in Central City on Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Revs. Debra Tompsett-Welch and Bob Neben will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church.
Mrs. McClay was born Oct. 27, 1913, in rural Merrick County to William and Mary Whittemore. She graduated in 1931 from Central City High School.
She married
John W. McClay on Aug. 23, 1936, in Central City. Mrs. McClay worked at Wilder's Cafe for 25 years, at the Central Cafe, and at the Nixon Hotel.
She had been living at Community Care for the last several years. Mr. McClay died Sept. 29, 1991.
She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church and had belonged to the Rebekah Lodge for 25 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary (Mrs. Raymond) Beal and Florence Zetah, both of Central City; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by one son, Paul McClay; one grandson; and four brothers, Paul, Francis, Harold and Herbert Whittemore.
Robert Miller
KEARNEY -- Robert D. Miller, 54, of Kearney, formerly of Grand Island, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, at Kearney.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Metz Chapel in York. Cremation will follow the services. Private family burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be at the Metz Mortuary in York.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Miller was born March 14, 1944, at Ashland, Mont., to Frank and Marie (Buller) Miller. He was employed by the State Department of Roads at Kearney. He was formerly York County Sheriff, a 4-H Leader, former memer of the York Trail Riders and was an avid outdoorsman.
On Sept. 13, 1963, he married
Margaret Kilgore at York.
Then he was married
to Ruther Hester on Dec. 19, 1981, at Nashville, Tenn.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Michelle (Mrs. Ed) Weldon of Bradshaw; one grandson; one brother; and three sisters.
He was preceded in death by his mother, first wife, one daughter and one brothers.
Steve Papiernik
ORD -- Steve J. Papiernik, 93, of Ord died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Rev. James Warner will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. rosary at the Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church or the Ord Alumni Scholarship Fund.
Thomas Williams
ORD -- Thomas "Buck" Williams, 90, of Ord died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Ord United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jim Miller will officiate. Concluding services will be conducted by the Ord Masonic Lodge 103 A.F. and A.M. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Ord High School Alumni Association.
Mr. Williams was born Nov. 22, 1908, at Elliott, Iowa to Thomas and Hannah (Neuschwanger) Williams. At a young age he moved with his family to Burwell.
He began his education in country school near Burwell. In 1919 he moved to Ord where he continued his education at Ord High School. He worked for the Ord Public Schools for over 40 years.
He married
Garnette Jackman on Dec. 2, 1939, at St. Paul. Mrs. Williams died March 26, 1994. He continued to live at Ord until November 1997 when he moved to the Hamilton Manor.
He had been a member of the Ord. United Methodist Church, the Ord Masonic Lodge 103 A.F. & A.M. and the Ord Elks Lodge 2371.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching sports, playing cards and his dogs.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas of Billings, Mont., and James of Amesbury, Mass.; one daughter, Kathryn (Mrs. Max) Mankin of Aurora; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife he was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Karolyn Jarvis
COZAD -- Karolyn Jarvis, 70, of Cozad, formerly of Taylor, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at the Cozad hospital.
Private family services will be held.
Berryman Funeral Home of Cozad is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Jarvis was born on May 2, 1928, at Taylor to Carroll and Blanche (Hyde) Bohy. She graduated from Taylor High School in 1945. She attended Wesleyan University and graduated from Kearney State Teachers College with a degree in education.
She married
Jerry Jarvis on Feb. 9, 1952. She had taught special education and physical education and coached at Central City, Omaha and Taylor. The couple moved to Cozad in 1977 from Taylor, and she had worked for Paulsen Inc.
She was a member of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Jerolyn (Mrs. Michael) Brown of Mansfield, Texas; two grandchildren; and her mother, of Burwell.
She was preceded in death by her father and a grandson.
