Paul Newsome
HASTINGS -- Paul W. Newsome, 78, of Hastings died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at Perkins Pavilion.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Butler-Volland Chapel in Hastings. The Rev. James Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday, 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to service time Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Cedar Home for Children.
Mr. Newsome was born on March 5, 1920, in Kansas City, Kan., to Thomas H. and Maude (Karr) Newsome. He attended school in Kansas City and, at an early age, went to work for General Mills in Kansas City, Mo. He was drafted into the U.S. Air Force in 1941 and served in Central Burma and India.
He married
Doris P. Bailey on March 28, 1942, in Belton, Mo. He returned to General Mills in 1946. He graduated from the School of Milling in Manhattan, Kan. He moved to Fremont in 1953 and worked for Consolidated Blenders. He moved to Hastings in 1968 to work for Morrison Quirk. He worked for Morrison Enterprises until his retirement in 1995.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the America Alfalfa Processors Association.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Carl Newsome of Omaha and Gary Newsome of Hastings; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a sister, Helen Vest of Grandview, Mo.
He was preceded in death by one sister.
Laura Huffman
LINCOLN -- Laura Huffman, 38, of Lincoln, formerly of Fullerton, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Fullerton. The Rev. Jim Howland will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church.
Palmer's Funeral Home of Fullerton is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Huffman was born on July 23, 1960, at Fullerton to Dick and Wilma Russell.
She grew up in Fullerton and graduated in 1978. She graduated from the University of Nebraska Associate Nursing Program in 1980. She worked at Lincoln General and Bryan Hospital and for Dr. Gary Millius.
She married
Dr. Michael Huffman on March 21, 1987, at Lincoln.
She was a volunteer at her daughter's school, Rousseau and PEO. She was also a member of Alpha Ze Delta sorority and the Lancaster Medical Hospital Auxiliary.
She loved Nebraska football, the Stars hockey games, reading, crafts, collecting bears, especially Beanie Baby bears, and attending the Nance County Fair every year.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Mallory of Lincoln; her parents, of Fullerton; two brothers, Scott of Fullerton and Kirk of Grant; one sister, Jan (Mrs. Harold) Danley of Raymond; and her grandmother, Grace Russell of Fullerton.
Ruby Ellis
Ruby Irene Ellis, 88, of Grand Island died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at Edgewood Vista in Grand Island.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Richard Bacon will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church.
Mrs. Ellis was born on Nov. 30, 1910, at Grand Island to Herman and Anna (Schwartz) Schutt. She grew up and was educated in Hall County. She attended District 13 School and Grand Island public schools.
She married
John Ellis on June 11, 1929, at Bridgeport. Mr. Ellis owned Sanitary Garbage Services, where Mrs. Ellis worked as a bookkeeper and office manager. Mr. Ellis died on June 12, 1965.
Mrs. Ellis sold the business in 1965.
She worked at Hested's from 1965 to 1967, Parkside Manor from 1967 to 1968 and Delicious Foods from 1968 to 1976.
She also worked at Platter Restaurant and the Holiday Inn for one year each. She worked at Greyhound from 1978 until her retirement in 1985.
She was a member of the First Christian Church.
Survivors include five daughters, Marilyn Lif, Lavonne Hansen and Linda Eilts, all of Grand Island, Beverly Darnall of Hill City, S.D., and Karen Alcorn of Estes Park, Colo.; one son, Addren "John" Ellis of Hastings; 21 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Arthur; three grandsons, four brothers and three sisters.
Robert Holt
Robert C. Holt, 58, of 1812 N. Huston died on Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Mr. Holt was cremated. Inurnment will be in Restland Memorial Park in Dallas.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Assembly of God Church in Mesquite, Texas. Pastor LeRoy Butts will officiate.
Further memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Calvary Assembly of God Church in Grand Island. Pastor Terry Brown will officiate.

Mr. Holt was born on Feb. 17, 1940, at Rock Island, Okla., to Charles A. and Sonora (Fullen) Holt. At the age of 12, he moved with his family to Dallas, where he attended school.
He joined the U.S. Air Force on March 20, 1961, and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and Germany as a personnel specialist. After his discharge on April 5, 1965, he came to Grand Island.
He married
Janice Bruhn on June 20, 1965. They moved to Texas for one year and then came back to Grand Island. He received his degree in elementary education from Kearney State College.
He taught at Engleman Elementary, rural Howard County District 16 and Merna public schools before returning to Okinawa, Japan, for four years as a missionary teacher at Neighborhood Full Gospel School. He came back to Grand Island and received his master's degree in school administration from Kearney State College.
The family moved to Dallas, where he taught for 17 years at Mount Auburn Elementary before ill health made it impossible to continue. He retired in 1995 and moved to Grand Island in 1998.
He was a member of the First Assembly of God in Mesquite, Texas, and the Texas State Teachers Association. He attended Calvary Assembly of God.
He enjoyed working on his computer, card games, tutoring students in reading and Bill Gaither videos.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Camilla R. Holt of Grand Island and Candice L. Holt of Kearney; five sisters, Bernice Holt and Pat (Mrs. Don) Maxfield, both of Garland, Texas, Charlene (Mrs. Ed) Walton of Plano, Texas, Helen (Mrs. M.C.) Johnson of Clarksdale, Miss., and Judy (Mrs. David) Neal of Rowlett, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Emma Jean Parker; and two brothers, Jack Thomas and James William Holt.
Theodore Kane
Theodore L. Kane Jr., 90, of Grand Island died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Alma Stueven
Alma Anna Stueven, 90, of Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at Wedgewood.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Messiah Lutheran Church. The Rev. Gretchen Diers will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Stueven was born on Oct. 8, 1908, at Emerald in Lancaster County to Herman and Louisa (Nobbmann) Busboom. She moved to Grand Island when she was 1 year old. She grew up and was educated in Grand Island.
She married
William C. Stueven on March 3, 1926, in Grand Island. They lived on a farm west of Grand Island until 1956, when they moved into Grand Island. She worked for Schuff's Cafeteria for 17 years and for Fred and Mary Todson for 10 years. Mr. Stueven died on Feb. 7, 1969.
Survivors include three children, LaVern Stueven of Grand Island, Delbert Stueven of Alda and Joan (Mrs. Don) Jensen of Newton, Iowa; five grandchildren, three step grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Alvin Busboom; and one sister, Nelda Gosda.
