Norman Hoft
IONIA, Kan. -- Norman D. Hoft, 62, of Ionia, Kan., died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in West Cedar cemetery north of Agra, Kan. The Rev. Nancy Harris will officiate.
The Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg, Kan., is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hoft was born on Dec. 2, 1936, in Phillips County, Kan., to Herman H. and Martha I. (Smith) Hoft.
He was a mill operator in a feed mill.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include two sons, Rodney and Rusty, both of Cawker City, Kan.; two daughters, Jerre Hughes of Glen Elder, Kan., and JoEllis Abram of Beloit, Kan.; and six grandchildren.
Velma King
Velma J. King, 80, of 1123 W. 10th St. died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. David Bendickson will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. King was born on June 29, 1918, in Broken Bow to Alonzo and Amy (Smith) Cason. She grew up in Broken Bow and graduated from Broken Bow High School.
She married
Reynolds "Sye" King on Oct. 28, 1941, at Stapleton. They lived in Broken Bow until 1956, when they moved to Golden, Colo. They moved to Grand Island in 1965.
She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and was involved in many volunteer projects. She was active in the Adult Day-Care Center in Grand Island.
Survivors include a son, Jack of Grand Island; two sisters, Irene M. James of Broken Bow and Juanita "Betty" Luallen of Vasalia, Calif.; and one brother, Robert Cason of Hot Springs Village, Ark.
Her husband died in 1993. She also was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruby Wattles, Florence Kennedy and an infant sister, Dorothy; and one brother, Edward Cason.
Vernon Kumm
Vernon G. Kumm, 71, of 1915 W. 11th St. died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at St. Francis Skilled Care.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Kleine Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert Harms will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m., with family receiving friends from 3 to 4 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Trinity Lutheran Hour or to the donor's choice.
Mr. Kumm was born on March 19, 1927, at Osmond to Ludwig and Nellie (Opkis) Kumm. He was educated at Osmond Parochial School, Meadow Lark School, Fairfield School, Creighton School and Plainview High School.
He entered the U.S. Marine Corps on Sept. 25, 1945, and was discharged on Sept. 25, 1946, as a private first class.
He married
Berneice Rafert on June 17, 1951, at Amherst, Colo. They lived in Holyoke, Colo., where he worked at Highline Electric, and later lived in Fort Morgan, Colo., where he worked for Hamlin Electric as a journeyman lineman for 10 years. He returned to Nebraska and lived in the Wausa and Norfolk area before coming to Grand Island in 1969 as a local union carpenter.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 53.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Steven of Chandler, Ariz., and David of Thornton, Colo.; four daughters, Faye (Mrs. Tom) Conlon of Grand Island, Linda Hokanson of Lakewood, Colo., Susan (Mrs. Barry) Crume of Fort Collins, Colo., and Melanie Kumm of Lincoln; five grandchildren; one step grandchild; one brother, Leonard of Bloomfield; and two sisters, Rose Jensen of Wausa and Hilda Buhrman of Pierce.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Rudolph and Reinhold; and four sisters, Lucy Kumm, Lillian Christensen, Mildred Marks and Lois Kapperman.
Vera Struble
Vera A. Struble, 85, of Grand Island died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at Tiffany Square Care Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. John M. Hayes will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Grace Baptist Church.
Mrs. Struble was born on Aug. 31, 1913, at Boelus to Charles and Martha (Dethlefs) Tockey. She grew up and was educated at Boelus.
She married
Francis Struble on Jan. 12, 1935, at Central City. They lived in Ravenna until 1951, when they moved to Grand Island. Mr. Struble died on Feb. 12, 1992.
Mrs. Struble was a member of the Grace Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Charles of Grand Island; one granddaughter; and two sisters, Marguerite Roberts of Hawthorne, Calif., and Sylvia Barnes of Truth or Consequences, N.M.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Mable Hill; and six brothers, John, Art, Fred, George, Charles and Tag Tockey.
'Gerry' Wingert
Geraldine E. "Gerry" Wingert, 89, of Grand Island died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at Lakeview Rehab/Nursing Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. Harry Kurtenbach will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m., Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Arthritis Foundation.
Mrs. Wingert was born on Oct. 27, 1909, at Elm Creek to Clarence E. and Mae (Purdey) Fisher. She lived for a short time in Texas before her family moved to Grand Island in 1915. She graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1929.
She went to work for Model Laundry in 1931 and worked there through the Depression.
She married
Ralph Wingert on May 25, 1939, in Grand Island. Mr. Wingert died in 1966.
Mrs. Wingert worked for F.W. Woolworth and Co. for 18 years, retiring in 1975 at the age of 65.
She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral and the Altar Society. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, reading and music.
Survivors include one son, Michael of Loveland, Colo.; two daughters, Eileen (Mrs. Bob) Tesmer of Grand Island and Jerrilyn Dammann of Wabasha, Minn.; one stepdaughter, Roberta (Mrs. Dale) Willey of Grand Island; one stepson, William Ralph Wingert Jr. of Golden Valley, Minn.; 22 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Wanda (Mrs. Robert) Borgaard of Minden.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren and one brother.
Robert McClure
ORD -- Robert Thomas McClure, 69, of Ord died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at his home.
Mr. McClure was cremated. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ord Memorial Chapel. Following services, the Ord Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion will conduct military rites.
Inurnment will be at a later date in Memory Land cemetery at Anakarko, Okla.
