Clara Harris
Clara R. Harris, 89, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at Park Place Health Care and Rehab Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Grand Island City Cemetery. The Rev. Jose Chavez will officiate. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Cathedral.
Mrs. Harris was born June 1, 1909, to Nicholas and Veronica (Mendick) Kowalski at Elba. She grew up and received her education at St. Libory.
On Feb. 14, 1930, she married
Janeral E. Harris of Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island where she worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. After working there for four years, she then became a homemaker and mother.
She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral. She was active in the Altar Society there. She was also a member of the Eagles.
Survivors include one son, Janeral "Jay" Harris; one daughter, Elladien Petty of Florida; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and three grandsons.
Katherine Hansen
Central City -- Mary Katherine Hansen, 85, of Central City, formerly of Aurora, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in the long-term unit of Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Aurora Cemetery. The Rev. Dale Sallans will officiate.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mrs. Hansen was born on Nov. 8, 1912, at Aurora to Harve and Lyda (Barbee) Grosvenor. She grew up at Aurora, where she was educated and graduated from Aurora High School in 1930. Following graduation, she worked for Iowa-Nebraska Gas Co. in Aurora.
She married
Cecil Hansen on Aug. 31, 1947, at North Platte. They lived in Aurora, where she worked as a bookkeeper for Grosshans International and later as a billing clerk for the Aurora Water Department. Mr. Hansen died on July 8, 1960.
Mrs. Hansen helped operate the Aurora Senior Citizens Center. She moved in 1972 to Central City, where she was senior citizen director until retiring in 1978.
She was a member of the Central City Presbyterian Church and the Aurora American Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed working with ceramics.
Survivors include one son, Jim of Central City.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, David; a sister, Margaret; and an infant brother, Harold.
Grace McDonald
CENTRAL CITY -- Grace McDonald, 90, formerly of Grand Island, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, at Community Care in Central City.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Grand Island City cemetery with the Rev. Debra Tompsett-Welch officiating.
There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Community Care.
Solt Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of arrangements.
Sam Spitler
DUNNING -- John Samuel "Sam" Spitler, 86, of Dunning died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Spitler was cremated.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Church of Christ in Dunning. The Rev. David Hansen will officiate. Burial will be in the Greeley Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. Govier Brothers Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Spitler was born on Dec. 29, 1911, at Burnt Prairie, Ill., to William Clarence and Lilly (Penrod) Spitler. At the age of 7, he moved with his family to Oklahoma. He had to drop out of school after the eighth grade to help raise his brothers and sisters.
He moved from Oklahoma to Nebraska in 1929 and lived in the Sandhills area. He worked as a cowboy and ranch hand, rodeoed and broke horses.
He married
Jennie Landen on Oct. 30, 1937, at Ord. They lived on the Double S Ranch near Dunning. They moved into Dunning in 1951 and purchased the Spitler Store. They operated the store until May 1988.
Mr. Spitler attended the United Church of Christ in Dunning. He had been in the National Guard and had also worked as a brand inspector.
He had been a 4-H leader, president of the Blaine County Fair Board for 16 years, co-founder of the Kids Rodeo in Blaine County and was known as the "official local vet."
Survivors include his wife; one son, Don Spitler of Northway, Alaska; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Sadie Cole of Phoenix, Ariz.; and one brother, Leonard Connley of Porter, Okla.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie and Bob; and four sisters, Hazel, Emma, Clara and Ruth.
Patricia Zaruba
FULLERTON -- Patricia A. Zaruba, 79, of Fullerton died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at her son's home in Albion.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peters Catholic Church in Fullerton. The Rev. Don Cleary will officiate. Burial will be in Fullerton Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. scripture service at Palmer's Funeral Home in Fullerton.
Judge Robert Flory
FREMONT -- Judge Robert Lehr Flory, 80, of Fremont died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at the Fremont Area Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Lattin-Dugan-Chambers Funeral Home in Fremont. The Rev. Robert Flory will officiate.
Memorials are suggested to the Fremont Area Medical Center Foundation.
Margaretta Bonneau
BOULDER CITY, Nev. -- Margaretta "Betty" Bonneau, 80, of Boulder City, Nev., formerly of Grand Island, died Sept. 29, 1998, at a Boulder City hospital.
Services will be on Saturday at Palm Mortuary in Henderson, Nev. Burial will be in Palm Cemetery.
Mrs. Bonneau was born on June 29, 1918, at Albuquerque, N.M. She grew up in California and Pennsylvania. She moved to Grand Island in 1960 and remained until May of this year.
Survivors include one daughter, Bonnie Bonneau of Taos, N.M.; three sons, Will of Omaha, David of Chicago and John of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and six grandchildren.
Max Moses
Max E. Moses, 94, of Riverside Lodge died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at the lodge.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. The Rev. Jose Chavez will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. rosary, at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Cathedral.
Mr. Moses was born July 12, 1904, to E. Lewis and Clara (Van Wie) Moses in Norfolk. He was raised and attended school in Grand Island, graduating from Grand Island Senior High School in 1924.
He married
Eleanor Curten on Aug. 30, 1938, in Grand Island. Since 1947, they lived in Grand Island, where he was district court clerk for 32 years, retiring in 1979. Mrs. Moses died on Nov. 7, 1992.
He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral and U.C.T. Association. He was an avid Nebraska football fan.
Survivors include one son, Robert of Bristow, Okla.; three granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; one nephew, Keith Skeels of Grand Island, and one niece, Marilyn Rank of Grand Island.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Blanche Copp and Goldie Skeels and two half brothers, Earl and Merle McKillips.
