Bill Schaffitzel
Bill G. Schaffitzel, 74, of 2010 W. Stolley Park Road died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at the Skilled Care Unit of St. Francis Memorial Health Center.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Jerry Quandt will officiate.
There will be no visitation. Mr. Schaffitzel's body was cremated.
Mr. Schaffitzel was born on April 19, 1923, in Republic, Mo., to Albert and Dorthea (Harrington) Schaffitzel. He grew up in Springfield, Mo., and graduated from Springfield High School in 1941.
He entered the U.S. Air Force on Jan. 13, 1943. He served as an airplane gunner and received the Good Conduct Medal, Air Medal and Victory Medal. He served in the American Theater and European-African-Middle Eastern Theaters and received the Bronze Star. He was a prisoner of war for 141/2 months. He was discharged as a staff sergeant on Nov. 15, 1945.
He married
Betty Davis on July 12, 1945, in Springfield, Mo. They moved to Grand Island in 1947. He worked for Watson Brothers and Bee Line Motor Freight. He retired in 1980.
He and his wife enjoyed traveling with their recreational vehicle, fishing and sports.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Linda Moore of Amarillo, Texas, and Pam (Mrs. Sam) Cain of San Diego; and one granddaughter.
Donna Anderson
CLARKS -- Donna Louise Anderson, 36, of Clarks died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Clarks. The Rev. Kenneth Vavrina will officiate. Burial will be in the Clarks Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. rosary, Friday at the church.
Solt Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Anderson was born on Aug. 29, 1961, in Albion to Raymond and Clareen M. (Nienbauer) Prothman. She attended St. Michael's School in Albion and graduated from Albion High School in 1979.
She married
Robert C. "Bob" Anderson on Aug. 2, 1980, in Albion. They lived in Albion until 1987, when they moved to Clarks. She had worked at Red Cedar Products and Luanna's in Clarks.
She loved to crochet, make crafts, refinish furniture, read and go shopping.
She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Clarks and the Altar Society.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Staci Louise and Melissa Margaret, both at home; her parents, of Albion; two brothers, Dan Prothman and Dave Prothman, both of Albion; five sisters, Arlene (Mrs. Scott) Neidhardt of Albion, Jane (Mrs. Mike) Roesler of Malcolm, Lori (Mrs. Steve) Wagner of Pierce, Carol (Mrs. Roger) Kotas of Wilber and Nancy (Mrs. Dale) Gasper of Columbus; and her grandmother, Margaret Nienaber of Lindsay.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Judy and Elaine Prothman; and her grandparents, Tony Nienaber and Albert and Pauline Prothman.
Edmund Kershaw
SPALDING -- Edmund R. "Junior" Kershaw, 70, of Spalding died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, in the Boone County Health Center after a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding. The Rev. Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with rosaries at 4:30 and 8 p.m., Thursday at the church. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Dolce-Scheef Funeral Home of Spalding is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Kershaw was born on Jan. 23, 1928, in Genoa to Edmund "Ned" and Lillian (Imus) Kershaw. The Kershaws moved to a farm southeast of Spalding in 1929. He attended country grade school and then farmed with his father.
He married
Carol Pfeifer on Feb. 15, 1950, in Spalding. They farmed southwest of Primrose in Boone County until August 1964, when they moved to the Kershaw homestead south of Spalding.
The Kershaws moved into Spalding in 1979. Mr. Kershaw continued to farm and work for Spalding Co-op Elevator until his retirement in 1993.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of St. Michael's Men's Club and the Spalding EMTs.
Survivors include his wife; six daughters, Vickie Connelly, Jerri Ray, Becky Buettner and Tami Keber, all of Spalding, Sandy Kershaw of Ashland and Jeannie Lantz of Bennington; one son, Edmund R. "Rocky" Kershaw of Grand Island; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and five sisters, Pauline Hemmingsen of Primrose, Pearl Fitzsimmons of Cedar Rapids, Cecil DeFreece of Columbus, LaJean Kelly of Omaha and Jackie Smith of Bartow, Fla.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Donald.
Naomi Sohrweid
ORD -- Naomi Sohrweid, 87, of Ord died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ord. The Rev. Roger Leavitt will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Family Life Center Building Fund at the church.
Merna Hoage
AUSTIN, Texas -- Merna M. Hoage, 65, of Austin, Texas, formerly of Wood River, died Feb. 18, 1998.
Services were at Beck Funeral Home Chapel in Austin. The Rev. Elmer Holtman officiated.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Cameron cemetery near Wood River.
Mrs. Hoage was born on July 28, 1932, in Wood River to Everett and Ruby (Dubbs) Vogel. She grew up and attended school in Wood River and graduated from Wood River High School in 1949. She attended Kearney State College.
She married
Frank Hoage on April 15, 1955, in Grand Island. She was a bookkeeper for many years. The couple lived in many places, including Germany, due to her husband's Army career. At the time of her death, she was a bookkeeper at Westwood High School in Austin.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Wade and Anthony "Tony" Hoage, both of Austin; and two sisters, Ramona Hadenfeldt of Fort Collins, Colo., and Cheryl Tyler of Wood River.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Franklin Vogel.
Gerald Klinginsmith
DODGE CITY, Kan. -- Gerald L. Klinginsmith, 66, of Dodge City, Kan., formerly of St. Paul, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Mid-Plains Hospital in Dodge City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Rosalie Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery in St. Paul, with military graveside rites by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the Lymphoma Research Foundation of America or Hospice of the Prairie.
Mr. Klinginsmith was born on Oct. 21, 1931, in St. Paul to Ellis and Gertrude (Kasson) Klinginsmith.
He moved to Dodge City, Kan., in 1963 from St. Paul. He operated Mammel's Grocery Store in Dodge City and built the A&W; and Dodge House Restaurant and Holiday Inn of Dodge City. He purchased Havlic's Grocery Store, later known as St. Paul Jack & Jill. He owned the Jack & Jill stores in Ord and McCook, Comanche Beverage Outlet and Gunsmoke Arabians in Dodge City.
He married
Nancy Tennant on Aug. 23, 1993, in Dodge City. The couple continued to live in Dodge City. He had served in the U.S. Air Force.
He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1714 in Dodge City, Elks Lodge and Dodge City Chamber of Commerce. He was past president of the St. Paul Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Mark of Lincoln; three daughters, Debra Klinginsmith of Wichita, Kan., Kimberly Benesh of Genoa and Lona Klinginsmith of Ord; two stepdaughters, Dayna Williams of Sparks, Nev., and Gay Klassen of Andover, Kan.; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, Russel of Garden Ridge, Texas, and Rex of Grand Island; and three sisters, Opal Gartland and Doris Voorhees, both of Grand Island, and Ruby Steffey of St. Paul.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Jim; and two sisters, Evelyn Jones and Francis Bragg.
Edna Wichmann
Edna Wichmann, 92, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997, at Community Care of America in Palmer.
Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
