U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Albin Carkoski

LINCOLN -- Albin J. Carkoski, 85, of Lincoln, formerly of Grand Island, died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, in Lincoln.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Michael Houlihan officiating. A rosary will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park.

Butherus-Maser and Love Mortuary of Lincoln is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Mr. Carkoski was a retired shop foreman for the Department of Roads. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Survivors include one son, Myron of Lincoln; one daughter, Ruth (Mrs. Max) Engler of Omaha; one brother, Sylvester Carkoski of Green Bay, Wis.; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Richard Clark

STERLING, Colo. -- Richard Clark, 46, of Sterling, Colo., died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at Sterling after a battle with lung cancer.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Sterling. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Tennant Funeral Home in Sterling with a 7 p.m. vigil and rosary.

Mr. Clark was born April 18, 1951 in San Antonio, Texas, to John and Helen Guri Clark. He was a 1969 graduate of Hastings High School and a 1973 graduate of the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. He was a certified public accountant since 1972, starting his career with Touche Ross & Co. He joined Pyle and Associates in 1976. He currently worked for McGladrey & Pullen.

His entire career was based in Sterling. He was president of the Northeast Chapter of CPAs and a member of the American Institute of CPAs and the Colorado Society of CPAs. He was a certified CPA in Colorado and Nebraska.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, camping, golf, classic car restoration, training his hunting dogs and woodworking. He was involved in the Game and Fish Club of Northeast Colorado; secretary of the Colorado Flatlanders; member of Sterling Chapter of Pheasants Forever; treasurer for the Sterling Chapter of Ducks Unlimited; Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation; National Wildlife Foundation; Colorado Wildlife Federation; National Rifle Association; United Sportsman Council and Red Hill Gun Club.

He was active in the Elks Club, Sterling Noon Lions Club, Sterling Country Club, Urban Renewal Committee and Sterling Downtown Improvement Committee.

Survivors include his wife, Pam; one son, Tim; one daughter, Becky; his parents, Jack and Helen Clark of Allentown, Pa.; two brothers, John Clark of Sutton, Mass., and David Clark of Carbondale, Colo.; and one sister, Cindy Metzger of Severna Park, Md.

Edith Iona Fleek

CENTRAL CITY -- Edith Iona Fleek, 85, of Central City died on Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Central City Cemetery.

Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Fleek was born on July 14, 1913, in Shell Rock, Iowa, to Richard C. and Clara (Lincoln) Riley. She grew up and attended school in Merrick County.

She married Harry Fleek on Oct. 4, 1939. Mr. Fleek was killed in an automobile accident on Oct. 8, 1939.

Mrs. Fleek lived in Idaho for many years and was active in the Mormon Church there. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting and made many afghans and quilts.

She returned to Central City in the late 1970s to be near her family. She moved to Integrated Health Services Nursing Home in Central City in 1998.

Survivors include a nephew, Jerry King of Kearney; and a niece, Florence Reinmeth of Gering.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Bethel King, Mable Cummings, Emma Holcomb and two infant sisters; and a brother, Marian Riley.

Verne Glenn

CAIRO -- Verne H. Glenn, 70, of Cairo died Tuesday, April 6, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Gollaher Chapel at Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Thursday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the church or the Cairo Quick Response Team.

Mr. Glenn was born on July 12, 1928, at Grand Island to Mark C. and Gladys (Davidson) Glenn. He grew up in the Wood River and Cairo areas. He attended District 14 School in Wood River before graduating from Grand Island Senior High in 1947.

He entered the U.S. Army on Oct. 17, 1950, and served during the Korean War. He earned the Army Occupation Medal for service in Japan, the United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star. After his discharge on Aug. 16, 1952, he returned to the Hall County area and worked for Lewis Nursery and on their combining crew.

He began running the maintainer for the county Department of Roads on Dec. 1, 1961. He retired on March 9, 1993.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Cairo American Legion Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1340 in Grand Island. He enjoyed building models and hunting.

Survivors include one nephew, Steve Glenn of Wolbach; and four nieces, Nancy Ugarte of Palm Bay, Fla., Susan Hammontree of Summerville, N.C., Evelyn Glenn of Drayton, N.D., and Kathryn Grzadzielewski of Grafton, N.D.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth.

Willard Hollister

STROMSBURG -- Willard "Bill" C. Hollister, 75, of Stromsburg died Tuesday, April 6, 1999, at York General Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg. The Rev. Jeff Thurman will officiate. Burial will be in Hoffer Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.

Mr. Hollister was born on July 2, 1923, on a farm east of Stromsburg to William Lloyd and Emma (Westenius) Hollister. He attended Liberty Country School, Victor Country High School for two years and graduated from Stromsburg High School in 1940.

He married Dorothy Dahlgren on Aug. 21, 1949, in Osceola. He farmed with his father east of Stromsburg and later with his brother, Kenneth. Mr. Hollister's son Roger later joined the family farming business.

He enjoyed traveling and fishing.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Roger of Stromsburg and Steve of Lincoln; and four granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Willard; and one brother, Kenneth Lloyd.

Dan Ross

ST. PAUL -- Dan Ross, 56, of St. Paul died March 25, 1999, at his home.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Laura Bartels will officiate. Inurnment will be in Elmwood cemetery at St. Paul.

There will be no visitation. Mr. Ross was cremated.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Ross was born on Dec. 22, 1942, on a farm northwest of St. Paul to Adam and Esther (Anderson) Ross. He attended District 2 School and St. Paul Public School, where he graduated in 1961. He attended Milford Technical School for one year. He moved to Lincoln and worked for Pegler, Brunswick and Sutherland Lumber Co.

He married Carol Hamm. He was later transferred to Sutherland's in Denver and then to Corpus Christi, Texas. He was an accomplished finished carpenter and excelled in furniture building.

He married Patrica Gray Bellefeuille. He returned to Nebraska in April 1990 after his mother's death. He worked in construction as a carpenter and builder and did concrete work until ill health forced him to retire.

Survivors include two daughters, Sheila Oakeson-Kline of Oakland and Lori Lee Ross of Missoula, Mont.; two brothers, James of St. Paul and Willard of Grand Island; and three sisters, Mavis Gagner of Lincoln and Ramona (Mrs. Dave) Fredrick and Darlene Brahatcek of Ashton

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Marvin, Wilmer, Everett and Max; and a sister, Mary Dell Henderson.
