Murlin Lindgren
SAN ANSELMO, Calif. -- Murlin W. Lindgren, 81, of San Anselmo, Calif., died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, at a hospital in San Rafael, Calif.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Kleine Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. C. Roger Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mr. Lindgren was born on June 18, 1917, at Giltner. He was the son of Oscar Lindgren. He was raised in Giltner and graduated from high school there.
He married
Marguerite Kelly on Sept. 1, 1940, in San Francisco. They lived in San Francisco and later moved to Marin County, Calif. He worked as a supervisor of the heating and air conditioning repair department of Greyhound Transportation Co. in San Francisco for 40 years.
He was a baseball fan.
Survivors include one son, Randolph "Randy" Lindgren of Vandalia, Ohio; one daughter, Rosanne (Mrs. Hank) Vassaux of Powell, Ohio; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Ethel Burrows of Giltner; and one brother, Larry Lindgren of Redwood City, Calif.
He was preceded in death by two stepsisters and one stepbrother.
Kerry Philmalee
ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Kerry L. Philmalee, 46, of Alexandria, Va., formerly of Albion, was found dead of apparent natural causes on Thursday, July 2, 1998, at his home.
Services are pending with Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Leah Roe
WENATCHEE, Wash. -- Leah Roe, 84, of Wenatchee, Wash., formerly of Sargent, died June 27, 1998, in Wenatchee.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Mount Hope cemetery in Sargent. The Rev. Samm Johnston will officiate.
There will be no visitation.
Rhoad Funeral Home in Sargent is in charge of local arrangements.
Sophia Sampson
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- Sophia Alexandra Sampson, 10 weeks, of Eau Claire, Wis., died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at her home.
Private family services were on Wednesday at Fuller-Speckien Funeral Home in Eau Claire. The Rev. Mark Shulz officiated. Burial was in Forest Hill cemetery in Eau Claire.
Memorials are suggested to the Child and Family Fund, Mayo Children's Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester, Minn.
Sophia was born on April 18, 1998, at Eau Claire to Dave and Paulette (Ives) Sampson. She was baptized on May 2 at Peace Lutheran Church by the Rev. Mark Schulz.
Survivors include her parents; grandparents, Don and Jackie Sampson of Central City and Dick and Karen Ives of Augusta, Wis.; and great-grandparents, Richard and Verna Ives and Leona Volbrecht, all of Augusta.
Garland Stephenson
SUN CITY, Ariz. -- Garland E. Stephenson, 70, of Sun City, Ariz., formerly of Central City, died Thursday, July 2, 1998, at Northeast Regional Hospital in Las Vegas, N.M.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Barbara Hart will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mr. Stephenson was born on June 9, 1928, in Central City to Lewis and Ruth (Klinkman) Stephenson. He graduated from Central City High School in 1946.
He married
Patricia J. Larson on Aug. 19, 1948, in Central City.
He worked for the Nonpareil in Central City and continued with the newspaper after its merger with the Republican. He later purchased the Republican-Nonpareil. He retired from the newspaper in 1990. He moved to Sun City, Ariz., in 1991 and worked part time for the Lakeview Recreation Center at the Lakeview Bowling Alley.
He was a past member of the United Methodist Church in Central City and a current member of the Lakeview United Methodist Church in Sun City. He belonged to the Nebraska Press Association, was a former member of the Central City Chamber of Commerce and the Elks Club. He enjoyed golfing and NASCAR racing.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Randy of Bellevue and Terry of Fort Collins, Colo.; one daughter, Lavinia "Lynne" (Mrs. Todd) Tolliver of Moorpark, Calif.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Judy (Mrs. Larry) Jacobsen of Omaha.
Clarence Windfield
ALBURNETT, Iowa -- Clarence Windfield, 92, of Alburnett, Iowa, formerly of western Merrick County, died June 27, 1998, at his home following a long illness.
Services were on Wednesday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Burial was in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Mr. Windfield was born on June 17, 1906, in western Merrick County to Thomas and Lydia (Wagner) Windfield.
He married
Hanna Helzer on April 12, 1928, at Zion Lutheran Church in Worms. He farmed in the Worms area until 1943, when they moved to Alburnett. They farmed and fed cattle and, through the years, accumulated a large operation. Mrs. Windfield died in 1978.
Mr. Windfield married
Mary Jones on Oct. 22, 1980, in Bassett.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; a son, Loren of Alburnett; two daughters, Ramona Young of Central City, Iowa, and Deanna (Mrs. David) Brown of Meridian, Miss.; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Edgar and Lloyd, both of Grand Island.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Lilly, Myrtle and Mabel.
George Schulz
George William John Schulz, 94, formerly of Burwell, died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell. The Rev. Greg Volzke will officiate.
Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to St. John's Lutheran Church or the Burwell Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. Schulz was born on Oct. 16, 1903, at Yutan to George and Mary (Passo) Schulz. He moved with his family to Burwell in 1909. He attended District 14 School through the eighth grade.
Mr. Schulz then moved to Denver, where he worked in a bakery until 1942. He entered the service on Sept. 2, 1942, and was discharged on March 12, 1943, when he returned to Burwell.
He ran the Standard filling station for a few years before moving back to Denver.
He married
Mildred Morgan on Feb. 26, 1959, in Denver. They lived in Pomona, Calif., until 1972, when they moved to Hobbs, N.M. Mrs. Schulz died in 1975.
Mr. Schulz moved to Parkview Plaza in Burwell in 1978 and lived there until 1991, when he entered the Grand Island Veterans Home.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by one sister, Bernice Brockman.
Albert Gehrman
MERNA - Albert C. Gehrman, 90, of Merna died Sunday, May 3, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Tom Coll will officiate. Burial will be in Cliff cemetery west of Merna.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the Merna Rescue Unit.
Mr. Gehrman was born on Aug. 11, 1907, at Mead to William and Matilda (Conrad) Gehrman. He lived in Saunders County until about 1925, when he and his family moved to Custer County.
He married
Pearl Koening of Stapleton on Dec. 17, 1932. They lived on various farms in Custer County before moving to Merna in 1949.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Shirley (Mrs. Gary) Manning of Glendale, Ariz., and Sharlene Williams of Merna; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mae June of Anselmo.
He was preceded in death by twin children, Doris and Albert; one granddaughter; seven brothers and three sisters.
