Gerald Thiem
Gerald M. Thiem, 74, of Grand Island died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Faith United Methodist Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Richard Karohl will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Mr. Thiem was born March 4, 1924, at Humphrey to John and Mary (Loeffler) Thiem at Humphrey. At age 4 he moved with his parents to Boone County near Petersburg, where he received his schooling at District 56, St. John's Catholic School and District 48 schools.
After his education he farmed and in 1945 he became a mechanic. He entered the U.S. Army on May 17, 1946, and served in Japan and was discharged on Oct. 21, 1947.
He married
Vera Brengelman on July 19, 1946, at Norfolk. After is discharge they lived in Kearney, Hastings and later Grand Island where he was director of Services for Nebraska Truck Center. He retired in 1989.
He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church and an Amateur Radio Operator. He received his Ham Radio License in 1952, his call sign was KØOPC. He was also a member of the Grand Island Amateur Radio Society.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Lynn Thiem of Lincoln and Tim Thiem of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Rhonda Carlson of Castro Valley, Calif. and Gail Ingledew of Casper, Wyo.; nine grandchildren; three step grandchildren; one brother, Duane Thiem of Columbus and one sister, Lucile Thieman of Albion.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Marjorie Church
ELM CREEK -- Marjorie Church, 86, of Elm Creek, formerly of Clarks, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at Good Samaritan Skilled Care in Kearney.
Services are pending for 10 a.m. Saturday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. LaQuita McKibbin will officiate.
Maurice Fellers
GENOA -- Maurice O. Fellers, 81, of Genoa died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at the Genoa Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton. The Rev. Ken McQueen will officiate. Burial will be in the Main cemetery at Belgrade.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Fellers was born Feb. 6, 1917 to Arthur and Inez (Cravath) Fellers in Fullerton. He attended Fullerton and Belgrade Schools. He farmed in the Belgrade and North of Palmer areas.
On Sept. 12, 1951, he married
Eileen Hagmann at Belgrade. He worked at Sokol's for 12 years in production work. He also painted and did mechanic work. He retired in 1983 from Lindsay Manufacturing.
In 1982 he moved to Genoa and lived till his death.
He enjoyed typing, writing stories and diaries. He was a former member of the Belgrade Methodist Church and a lifetime member of Auctioneer.
Survivors include two sons, Jeff of Palmer and Jim of Genoa; two daughters, Jackie (Mrs. Jim) Riley of Grand island and Janet (Mrs. Arlen) Moody of Genoa; one brother, Arthur Fellers of Columbus; one sister, Margaret Schmidt of Columbus; 20 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his wife; one son, John; one brother, John; one sister, Ruth Fyfe; and an infant sister, Mary.
Rexford Ferris
CENTRAL CITY -- Rexford Lee Ferris, 85, of Central City died at his home on Tuesday, May 26, 1998.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Fairview United Methodist Church near Central City. The Rev. Barbara Hart will officiate. Burial will be in the Burke Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Solt Funeral home in Central City.
Memorials are suggested to the Fairview Church, Palmer Rescue Squad or donor's choice.
Mr. Ferris was born March 15, 1913, in Merrick County to Lee J. and Evaline A. (Hathaway) Ferris. he attended District 23 school and graduated from Central City High School in 1931. After completing school, he farmed with his father until his marriage to Donna Severance on March 9, 1937. Mr. and Mrs. Ferris than began their own farming operation and were innovators in mechanical and agricultural technology. Mr. Ferris retired in 1980, but continued to take an active interest in the farming operation until his death.
Mr. Ferris was a 75-year member of Fairview United Methodist Church, he was named the 1981 Stockman of the Year by Lone Tree Rodeo Association, served on District 51 School Board, was a member of the Merrick County Noxious Weed Board, a member of the Merrick County Fair Board, was a 4-H leader, belonged to a pinochle group for 40 years, enjoyed woodworking, fishing, traveling and bowling.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, David Ferris and Stanley Ferris, both of Central City and Steve Ferris of Lincoln; one daughter, Julie (Mrs. Richard) Bringelson of Grand Island; two brothers, Elwin Ferris of Central City and George Ferris of Archer; two sisters, Vivian (Mrs. David) Sander of Stillwater, Okla. and Iris Metz of Morton, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one infant sister, Mary Ferris and triplet siblings.
Emily Lothrop
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. The Rev. Jim Warner will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. rosary at the Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church or Home Health.
Mrs. Lothrop was born July 14, 1913, in the Geranium Township of Valley County to Joseph and Rose (Polak) Novotny. She attended the Manderson Country School through the eighth grade and graduated from Ord High School in 1931. She then attended the St. Paul Business School for two years.
She married
Jason Lothrop on June 4, 1934, at the Geranium Catholic Church west of Ord.
They lived in Fullerton for one year before moving back to Ord. In the 1930s she worked for Dr. George Parkins. She then began to work at the Nebraska State Bank in December 1942.
She worked for the bank for 35 years and had held the office of vice president. She retired in 1978. Mr. Lothrop died Dec. 26, 1994. She continued to make her home at Ord until her death.
She was a member of Our Lady of perpetual Help Catholic Church at Ord; the Altar Society; American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and the Valley County Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include a brother-in-law, Dillo Troyer of Ord; a nephew, Alan Troyer of Albuquerque, N.M.; and a niece, Mary Beth Parker of Ord.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Anne Peterson and Alyce Troyer and a brother, Ernest Novotny.
Alma Wilson
LOUP CITY -- Alma P. Wilson, 87, of Loup City died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at St. John's Good Samaritan Center in Kearney.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Loup City. The Rev. Lawrence Garland will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery at Loup City.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Peters Funeral Home in Loup City.
Memorials are suggested to the church, the Sherman County Historical Society or the I Believe In Me Ranch of Kearney.
Lorine Paine
Lorine J. Paine, 93, of Grand Island, a former high school teacher, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at the Community Care Center following a long illness with Alzheimer's disease.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Paine was born on Aug. 5, 1905, at Duncan to the Rev. Bernhard and Gertrude (Monsees) Johansen. She lived in various Nebraska towns where her father was a Methodist minister. She graduated from high school in Papillion in 1922.
She attended Central Wesleyan College in Warrenton, Mo., and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1926. She received her master's degree in English literature from Northwestern University at Evanston, Ill.
Mrs. Paine was a high school English teacher for 30 years. She taught for two years at Pierce, eight years at Lexington and at Grand Island Senior High from 1936 until her retirement in 1956.
She was married
to Bayard H. Paine Jr. on June 11, 1941, in Cincinnati by her father. The couple lived in Grand Island throughout their marriage. They observed their golden wedding anniversary on June 11, 1991.
Mrs. Paine was a member of the HMC Sewing Circle, served on the first Grand Island Planning Commission, was director of the YWCA and participated in the Little Theater. She was widely known for her book reviews.
She was a member for more than 60 years of Trinity United Methodist Church and sang in the choir for many years. She also was past president and a 60-year member of PEO, Chapter EH. She was a 60-year member of Andrew Chapter 41, Order of the Eastern Star; and a member of the Grand Island Woman's Club and Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer.
Survivors include her husband.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul B. Johansen, who died in infancy, and Walden M. "Jo" Johansen.
