James Peterson
COLUMBUS -- James A. Peterson, 67, of Columbus died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at the Columbus Manor.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. A family prayer service will be at 10:10 a.m. The Rev. Richard Bringewatt will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn cemetery at Columbus.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Gass-Haney Funeral Home and one hour before services Thursday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the family's choice.
Mr. Peterson was born on March 3, 1931, at Norfolk to Anton and Alma (Larsen) Peterson. He was educated in the Newman Grove schools.
He married
Phyllis Ann Wilken on July 26, 1953, at Columbus. He was a truck driver for Seward Motor Freight at Seward.
He was honored recently as a 30-year usher at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Lutheran Laymen's League.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Rachel (Mrs. Clem) Mewman of Anchorage, Alaska, and Priscilla (Mrs. Kelvin) Hawthorne of Valentine; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Bill Peterson of Grand Island; and three sisters, Phyllis Schlesinger of Stromsburg, Eunice (Mrs. Howard) Cedar of Central City and Eula Pearson of Columbus.
Barbara Beem
DIKE, Iowa -- Barbara L. Beem, 62, of Dike, Iowa, formerly of Grand Island, died Dec. 13, 1998, at Satori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Services were on Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Dike. The Dike Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Beem had worked at Midwest Insurance Agency in Grand Island before moving to Dike in 1979.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Rance of Dike, Troy of Grand Island and Paul of Denver, Iowa; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one brother, Rodney Snodgrass of North Platte.
Ruby Dority
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Ruby C. Dority, 87, of Oklahoma City, formerly of Albion, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion. The Rev. Frank Baumert will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Almyrta Larsen
SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Almyrta R. Larsen, 81, of Sioux City, Iowa, formerly of Grand Island, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel. The Rev. Leon Pfotenhauer will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Park cemetery in Sioux City.
There will be no visitation.
Mrs. Larsen was born on March 20, 1917, in Grand Rapids, Minn., to Chris and Mabel (Jellison) Baker.
She married
Henry B. Larsen on Aug. 31, 1941, in Grand Rapids, Minn. Mr. Larsen died on Sept. 16, 1962.
She worked as a bookkeeper most of her life for several hotels in Sioux City, Iowa, retiring in 1980 from Howard Johnson. Prior to returning to Sioux City, she spent the past 15 years living in Grand Island.
She was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church and Order of the Eastern Star Rose Croix No. 400.
Survivors include two sons, Brent of Sioux City and Bruce of Harrisburg, S.D.; one daughter, Karen (Mrs. Michael) Giuliano of Morristown, N.J.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Baker of Cohasset, Minn.; and one sister, Edna Watkins of Winston, Ore.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Arthur, Charlie and George; and four sisters, Hazel, Ethel, Mabel and Marguerite.
Jay Williams
ENID, Okla. -- Jay Alva Williams, 80, of Enid, Okla., formerly of Grand Island, died Dec. 13, 1998, at Claremore Regional Hospital.
Services were on Wednesday at Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Chapel. The Rev. Larry Proffit officiated. Burial was in the Lone Elm cemetery in Oklahoma.
Memorials are suggested to the Foyil Alumni Association of Foyil, Okla.
Mr. Williams was born on Sept. 20, 1918, in Wood River. He attended school in Grand Island.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was decorated and received a Bronze Star.
He married
Adelia "Dee" Sallee on Dec. 25, 1958, in Miami, Okla. They lived in Carson, Calif., where he worked as a forger at Alcoa Aluminum in Vernon, Calif. He retired after 32 years.
He enjoyed traveling in his motor home, camping, fishing and doing crafts.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Donna Adams of Dallas and Vicky (Mrs. Lee) Cheek of Twin Falls, Idaho; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Dean, Bill and Orville, all of Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
Carl G. McCullough
Carl G. McCullough, 87, of 2003 N. Huston died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church's chancel remodeling fund.
Mr. McCullough was born on Nov. 29, 1910, in Alda to Tom and Maude (Gibson) McCullough. He grew up and was educated in Alda and graduated from Alda High School in 1929. He began working for the Sears Roebuck Co. in 1930 as a manager of their farm store.
He married
Ivalee Wiechman on April 28, 1934, in Columbus. He joined the U.S. Army on Dec. 11, 1943, at Fort Crook and served as a corporal in the Pacific and Asiatic theaters during World War II. He was discharged on Jan. 11, 1946, in Fort Logan, Colo.
He returned to his job as a farm store manager for Sears and continued until 1965. He owned and operated Hurricane Fence in Grand Island from 1966 until retiring in 1972. After retiring, he continued to help at the store.
Mr. McCullough also volunteered for many years at St. Francis Medical Center and was named Volunteer of the Year in 1991 and in 1995.
He was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, a past church council member and on the building committee for the new church. He was also a member of the Grand Island Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge, Tehama Shrine, Scottish Rite, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Central Nebraska Shrine Club and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include two daughters, Jan (Mrs. Lavern) Grubbs of Grand Island and Karen (Mrs. Darrell) Dunakin of Grand Rapids, Mich.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Ruth Johnson.
His wife died on June 2, 1987. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Ellen Stevens.
Onna Bolich
LOUP CITY -- Onna M. Bolich, 89, of Loup City died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, at St. Paul.
Services are pending at Peters Funeral Home in Loup City.
'Dick' Church
LEXINGTON -- Richard L. "Dick" Church, 37, of Lexington died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, in an accident near Lexington.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington with the Rev. Don Burhman officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Pierce Chapel cemetery in Clarks.
A wake will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to his children.
Mary Lee
SPALDING -- Mary E. Lee, 101, of Spalding died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at Friendship Villa in Spalding.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding. The Rev. Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with rosaries at 4:30 and 8 p.m., Thursday at Dolce Scheef Mortuary.
Mrs. Lee was born on June 21, 1896, at Creighton to Thomas P. and Mary (Moodie) Darcy. She attended St. Luger's Academy in Creighton and St. Angela's Institute in Carroll, Iowa.
She graduated in 1916 and came to Spalding to teach domestic science at Spalding Academy, then called Our Lady of Lourdes. She was in charge of the girls dormitory and their domestic duties. She taught at the academy for two years.
She married
Emmett Lee on July 31, 1918, in Creighton. They lived on the family farm southeast of Spalding. They moved into Spalding in 1949. Mr. Lee died on May 31, 1977. Mrs. Lee moved to Friendship Villa in May 1989.
At the Spalding Academy Alumni Banquet in 1994, Mrs. Lee was recognized as the oldest living teacher from the academy.
Mrs. Lee was a 4-H leader, a member of the Royal Neighbors, St. Anne's Altar Society, Young Ladies Sodality, Catholic Daughters and a study group with the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. She taught catechism classes at St. Michael's Catholic Church
Survivors include four daughters, Margaret Dyson of Amarillo, Texas, Jeanne McMahon of Greeley, Colo., Ann Baer of Cameron Park, Calif., and Claire Kelly of Shingle Spring, Calif.; one son, Robert Lee of North Platte; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, William Charles Darcy of Canyon Lake, Calif.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, William Thomas; a daughter, Patricia Kay; two sisters, Alice Ann Evers and Kathleen Agusta Darcy; and a brother, Robert Michael Darcy.
