Marie Pedersen
Marie E. Pedersen, 64, of 630 E. Eilenstine Road died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Church of the Nazarene. She will be cremated after the services.
Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Kleine Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Delbert Alder
BURWELL -- Delbert D. Alder, 88, of Burwell died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at the Sargent Nursing Center in Sargent.
Services are pending with Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Harry Cockerill
SPALDING -- Harry Cockerill, 72, of Spalding died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding with the Revs. Frank Hoelck and James Murphy officiating. Military burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Monday with rosaries at 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church. Dolce-Scheef Mortuary of Spalding is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Cockerill was born on May 18, 1926, at Omaha to Franklin and Catherine (Melia) Cockerill. He grew up in Springfield and graduated from Springfield High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army from September 1944 to November 1946. After returning home, he farmed with his father in Springfield.
He married
Patricia McManaman at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding on Sept. 3, 1949. They lived in Gretna and moved to Spalding in March 1950. They ranched and farmed until his death.
He was a member of St. Michael's Men's Club, American Legion, V.F.W. and Knights of Columbus. He served 33 years on the Cornhusker Public Power Board, 29 years on Nebraska Electric Generation and Transmission Co-op and 23 years on Midwest Electric Consumers Association. He was presented the Spalding Citizenship Award on March 2.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia; four sons, Ed of Clarks, Richard of Albion, Mark of Spalding and Brian of Lincoln; five daughters, Ann (Mrs. John) Long and Karen (Mrs. Mike) Seim of Kearney, Janet (Mrs. Roger) Walker and Jennifer Cockerill of Omaha and Maureen (Mrs. Bill) Thome of Spalding; 16 grandchildren; four brothers, James and Frank of Gretna, Bob of Omaha and Bill of Springfield; two sisters, Francis Wall of San Gabriel, Calif. and Norell Stonebraker of Seattle, Wash.
He was preceded in death by one son, Daniel; one brother, Thomas; and two sisters, Marjorie Dunning and Patricia Kriefels.
'Kitty' Henion
SHELTON -- Catherine "Kitty" Henion, 69, of Shelton died Friday, April 16, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon with the Rev. Richard Macjewski of Shelton officiating. Burial will be in the Shelton Cemetery.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon.
Memorials are suggested to the Shelton Emergency Unit or Fire Department.
Mrs. Henion was born on July 31, 1929, at Milburn to Harley and Julia (Nelson) Hughes. She grew up in the area and graduated from Sargent High School in 1946.
She married
Chester C. Henion on June 2, 1946, at Sargent. They lived in Broken Bow until moving to Shelton in 1952, where he operated a service station for several years.
She enjoyed her family, friends, fishing, crossword puzzles and helping others.
Survivors include one son, Terry of Omaha; one brother, David Hughes of Washington; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1994, two brothers and a sister.
Donald Thompson
NORTH LOUP -- Donald W. Thompson, 74, of North Loup died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler, Texas.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cotesfield Methodist Church with the Rev. Martha Voigt officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery at Scotia. Reuben Beck American Legion Post No. 150 of Scotia will conduct military rites.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Mr. Thompson was born on Aug. 7, 1924, at Cotesfield to Walter and Goldie (Bradley) Thompson. He attended North Loup-Scotia Public Schools and graduated in 1942.
He married
Shirley Sample at North Loup on June 25, 1950. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from October 1950 to October 1951.
When he returned from the service, he and his wife farmed and lived in Greeley, Valley and Howard counties. He worked for Wells Ranch for 32 years. They owned and operated a cafe in Elba from 1972 to 1981. They moved to North Loup in 1992 and operated a restaurant. Mrs. Thompson died on March 22, 1997. He continued to live in North Loup.
He was a member of Cotesfield Methodist Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed military reunions, selling scrap iron and going to auctions.
Survivors include one daughter, Darcy Lee (Mrs. Willis) Cronk of Ord; three sons, Neill of North Loup, Darren of Cotesfield and Gale of Scotia; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Floyd of North Loup and Dale of Larned, Kan.; and four sisters, Betty Barber of Grand Island, Bernice Mitchell of Morrill, Avis Zauha of Greeley and Cora Watts of California.
He was preceded in death by his wife, one great-grandchild; one sister, Carol Ferguson; and one brother, Kenneth Thompson.
John Mattson
John L. Mattson, 36, of 223 E. 20th died Sunday, April 4, 1999, at Lakeview Rehab/Nursing Center after a bout with cancer.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kleine Funeral Home. The Rev. Fred Weiss will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Mattson was born on June 17, 1962, at Hastings to Jack and Jeannie (Cole) Mattson. He grew up in Grand Island and was educated here, graduating from Grand Island Senior High in 1980.
He worked at Skagway and for various construction companies in Grand Island. He raised pigeons, was an avid fisherman and enjoyed black-powder rifles.
Survivors include his parents, of Grand Island; one sister, Jodie (Mrs. Brian) Wormuth of Grand Island; and his grandparents, Nina Cole of Grand Island and Clarence Cole of York.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandmother, Margaret Clay.
Joe Bowden
DONIPHAN -- Joe L. Bowden, 71, of Doniphan died Sunday, April 4, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Doniphan United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bill Hunter will officiate. Burial will be in Cedarview cemetery in Doniphan.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Doniphan Quick Response Unit.
Mr. Bowden was born on May 25, 1927, on the family farm south of Doniphan to John and Georgia (Harrell) Bowden. He grew up and was educated in the Doniphan area. He attended District 60 School south of Doniphan and graduated from Doniphan High School in 1946.
He entered the Merchant Marine and then served in the U.S. Army in Korea.
He married
Mary Ann Denman on June 30, 1948, in Doniphan. Mr. Bowden worked for Great Lakes Pipeline in Doniphan. The couple then moved to Derby, Kan., and Mr. Bowden worked for Boeing Aircraft of Wichita for three years.
The couple then returned to Doniphan, where Mr. Bowden worked for Leon Plastics for 22 years.
He was a member of the Doniphan United Methodist Church, Doniphan American Legion Post 300, the Platt-Duetsche and the Grand Island Saddle Club.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Dan of Doniphan and Kirt and Scott, both of Grand Island; one daughter, Patti Moeller of Doniphan; 10 grandchildren; one sister, Gertrude Peabody of San Diego; and one brother, Tom Bowden of Hastings.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Fletch and Leo "Bub."
