David Fairbanks
David Robert Fairbanks, 7-month-old son of David Robert Fairbanks and Cathy W. Salinas of Grand Island, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 1998, at the Childrenšs Hospital in Omaha.
Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Kenneth Garner
Kenneth S. Garner, 84, of Grand Island died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, while undergoing tests at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Jerry Quandt will officiate. Burial of the cremains will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Garner was born Nov. 8, 1915, in Grand Island to Elmer and Pearl (Barbee) Garner. He was raised in Aurora and attended and graduated from the Nebraska School for the Deaf.
He spent much of his adult life in Grand Island, where he worked as a cement finisher and worked throughout the United States. His last years of work were with the Speltz-Schultz Lumber Company.
He enjoyed watching and participating in sports.
Survivors include one brother, Elmer of Otsego, Mich.; and one sister, Dorothy Edmonds of Ft. Pierce, Fla.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Don and Duane; and one sister, Maxine.
Khammanh Oythavixay
Khammanh Oythavixay, 58, of Grand Island died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island. Mr. Oythavixay will be cremated following the service.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Oythavixay was born Oct. 20, 1940, in Pakse, Laos, to Oy and Soy Oythavixay. He was raised in Laos.
He moved to the United States in 1980. He was employed at the Monfort Meatpacking Plant.
Survivors include his wife, Bounnhou of Laos, and one sister, Vone Keoprasuth of Holland, Mich.
Maxine Chelewski
LOUP CITY - Maxine Chelewski, 84, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at Rose Lane Home in Loup City.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church. The Rev. Reginald A. Urban will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Loup City.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the church. There will be a wake at 7:30 p.m. at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Chelewski family.
Mrs. Chelewski was born May 12, 1914, in Ashton to Joseph and Veronica (Maciejewski) Peters. She grew up and attended school in Ashton.
She first worked for the Fairmont Creamery in Loup City and later was a clerk for the Loup City Livestock Commission.
She married
Paul Chelewski on Aug. 17, 1936, in Rockville. They farmed together and he later worked as a livestock buyer. After 49 years of marriage, he died in 1985.
She was a member of St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City.
Survivors include a daughter, Judith (Mrs. John) Guthard of Litchfield; five grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister; three brothers; and a great-granddaughter, Meagan Smith.
Bill Svoboda
ST. PAUL - William E. "Bill" Svoboda, 93, of St. Paul died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at Community Care of America in Palmer.
Services are pending with Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul.
Robert McGuire
LEXINGTON - Robert J. McGuire, 71, of Lexington died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington. The Rev. Ray Kosmicki will officiate. A wake service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.
Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery in Lexington.
Mr. McGuire was born Jan. 12, 1927, in Grand Island to Paul and Lois (Schick) McGuire. He moved to Lexington from Wood River in 1933. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1945 and from Regis College in Denver in 1950.
Following college, he worked as the office manager for Alfalfa, Inc., in Audubon, Iowa, and then managed the office for Haymaker Feeds at Darr, Neb., from 1950 to 1952.
In 1952, he joined Chiles and Company as a registered representative. From 1952 to 1960 he was a resident manager of the Lexington office. From 1961 to 1970, he was the assistant vice president and office manager of the Lexington office for Chiles Heider and Company.
He was active in Boy Scouts. He has served the scouts as a Boy Scout, an Eagle Scout, scoutmaster and vice president of finance for the Overton Trails Council. He was currently serving on the board of directors.
He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, serving on many committees throughout the years. From 1960 to 1965, he was a member of the National Catholic Committee on Scouting.
He was past president of the Lexington Community Concert Association, past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, past president of the Lexington Lions Club and a former Rotarian, past president of the Lexington Arts Council, past vice president of the Lexington Foundation and a board member of the Dawson County Historical Society and Museum.
Survivors include a brother, Michael of Chicago; three sisters, Sister Mary Alice McGuire of Denver and Jane Earnest and Kay (Mrs. Jim) Bain, both of North Platte; and a cousin, Mary Ann Richards of Grand Island.
Tony Svoboda
DEWEESE - Anton "Tony" Svoboda, 78, of Deweese died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lawrence. The Rev. Dennis Hunt and Rev. Frank Machovec will officiate. Burial will be in the Sacred Catholic cemetery in rural Lawrence.
Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. at the Klawitter-Price Funeral Home in Nelson.
Mr. Svoboda was born Jan. 2, 1920, on a farm near Deweese to Joseph F. M. and Stella (Karmazin) Svoboda. He lived on the family farm his entire life. He attended Star School and Deweese Public School.
He married
Mildred Drudik on Oct. 18, 1949, in Lawrence. Together they farmed and raised three children.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Nelson.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert of Lincoln and Ron of Kenesaw; one daughter, Marlene Hilderbrand of Grand Island; five grandchildren; one brother, Irvin of Deweese, and one sister, Julia Svoboda of Hastings.
Steven Ohlsen
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa - Steven Eric Ohlsen, 47, of West Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of Grand Island and Hastings, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at Bergan Mercy Medical Center in Omaha.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island. The Rev. John Douglas Russell will officiate. A private family burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
