Marvelle Hawkins
Marvelle Hawkins, 60, of Grand Island, a former Custer County and Central City resident, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at St. Francis Skilled Care.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. David Kunze will officiate. Burial will be in the Ansley Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
'Sue' Bassham
LOUP CITY -- Walterena "Sue" Bassham, 59, of Loup City died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at Rose Lane Home in Loup City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Loup City. The Rev. Heidi Revelo will officiate.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City.
Private cremation will follow the services.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Elinor Johns
BURWELL -- Elinor E. Johns, 61, of Burwell died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at St. Francis Skilled Care Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Burwell with the Rev. Roger Gillming officiating. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the Wishing Well Foundation for children with cancer.
Mrs. Johns was born on Jan. 23, 1938, at Burwell to John and Mildred (Butcher) Ehresman Jr. She married
George L. Plock on June 9, 1957, in Oregon.
She was active as a mother, a Girl Scout leader and a 4-H leader for several years while her children were growing up. She worked as a school teacher, secretary and bookkeeper. She worked at Burwell City Hall for 23 years as deputy city clerk, city clerk and treasurer.
Mr. Plock died on Sept. 27, 1983.
She married
Thomas Johns on Aug. 23, 1986, at Burwell.
She was a member of the Methodist Church. She enjoyed crafts, quilting, garage sales and shopping. Their Lake Ericson cabin was her stress release.
Survivors include her husband, Tom of Burwell; two daughters, Shawnee (Mrs. Larry) Golka of Goddard, Kan., and Kendra Plock of Lincoln; two grandchildren; three step-children, Tonya (Mrs. Dale) Sutter of Ridgefarm, Ill., Cindy (Mrs. Larry) Williamsen of Kansas, Ill., and Tommy Johnson of Rock Springs, Wyo.; seven step-grandchildren; and one brother, Dwayne Ehresman of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George, and her son, Gregg, on July 17, 1993.
Everett Johnson
GIBBON -- Everett Johnson, 73, of rural Gibbon died Monday, April 26, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon with the Rev. Robert Flynn officiating. Burial will be in Gibbon Riverside cemetery with military graveside rites by the Gibbon American Legion.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Fund.
Kyle Karschner
KEARNEY -- Kyle L. Karschner, 19, of Kearney, died from an undiagnosed congenital heart defect on Saturday, April 24, 1999, shortly after being admitted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. The Rev. Michael McDonald will officiate. Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney. There will be a 7:30 p.m. prayer vigil Tuesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Karschner was born March 18, 1980, in Kearney to Larry and Pam (Conroy) Karschner. He attended school at Kenwood Elementary, Horizon Middle School and graduated from Kearney High in 1998. He was a student at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He worked for the Game and Parks Commission at Fort Kearny.
His ambition was to go into law enforcement as an officer or game warden.
He was an Eagle Scout. He was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Kearney and the Boys Scouts of America.
Survivors include his parents of Kearney; one sister, Kara of Kearney; paternal grandfather, Harold Karschner of Republican City; maternal grandparents, Paul and Bette Conroy of Oconto.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Jane and great-grandmother, Ethel.
Henrietta Redfern
RAVENNA -- Henrietta Redfern, 71, of Ravenna died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Congregational Church in Ravenna with the Rev. Doug DeNeui officiating. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery in Ravenna. Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna.
Memorials are suggested to P.E.O.
Mrs. Redfern was born on May 24, 1927, at Grand Island to Henry and Esther (Slette) Larson. She was educated in Ravenna. She attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and Kearney State College.
She married
Bill Redfern on Dec. 14, 1947, at Ravenna. They lived in Ravenna. She taught in Ravenna from 1967 until 1991. She was a member of the Congregational Church and P.E.O.
Survivors include her husband of Ravenna; one son, Rand of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Joan Moore of Ravenna; one sister, Thelma Adamson of Ravenna; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by twin infant brothers.
Marvin Steenson
GREELEY -- Marvin Steenson, 83, of Greeley died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at the Howard County Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley. The Rev. Gerald Carlson will officiate.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with the rosary at 7 p.m. at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Mr. Steenson was born on March 1, 1916, at Wolbach to James and Ernestine (Connor) Steenson. When he was 4 years old, the family moved to O'Connor. He attended school at St. Joseph's and graduated in 1936.
He married
Mary Frances O'Connell in April 1950 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. They farmed until 1978, when they moved into Greeley. While living in Greeley, he was caretaker of Sacred Heart cemetery and also was a salesman for Palmer-Scheffel Monuments in Grand Island until 1990, when ill health forced him to retire.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Gerard Steenson of Greeley; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant son and an infant daughter.
Virgil Vaughn
OMAHA -- Virgil E. Vaughn, 74, of Omaha, formerly of Hastings, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Omaha.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Jim Miller officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Cedarview cemetery in Doniphan. Visitation is from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Vaughn was born on March 9, 1925, in Beattie, Kan., to Virgil V. and Christine (Heleker) Vaughn. He graduated from Beattie High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from July 26, 1943, to April 5, 1946.
He married
Margaret Farabee on March 27, 1947, at the United Methodist Church in Doniphan. He worked for Hastings Industries and retired in 1987.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hastings, A.A.R.P. and Umpire Association in Omaha. He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 300 in Doniphan, a Boy Scout leader and past secretary of International Association of Machinists.
After retiring, he did crafts with his wife and daughters. He lived in Hastings from 1968 until 1998, when he moved to Omaha.
Survivors include his wife of Omaha; three daughters, Marylin Wolken , Colleen (Mrs. Don) Bender and Penny Davis, all of Omaha; one son, Virgil "Loren" Vaughn of Bellevue; six grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Dick Vaughn of Central City; three sisters, Mildred Hoffman of Grand Island, Mary Baldwin of Arkansas and Bette Goetsch of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
