Louis Pishna
BURWELL -- Louis Joseph Pishna, 82, of Burwell died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Mr. Pishna was cremated. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Burwell. The Rev. Roger Gillming will officiate.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the Burwell Firemen Equipment Fund.
Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Burwell is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Pishna was born on Feb. 7, 1916, in Pauline to Anton and Isabelle (Holland) Pishna.
He married
Doris Jeffres on May 21, 1938, in Loup City. They farmed for five years and moved into town in 1946. Mr. Pishna worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads as a mechanic for 34 years before retiring in 1981.
Mr. Pishna enjoyed woodworking and dancing. He was a past member of Elks Lodge.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Sam Pishna of Burwell and Vernon Pishna of Denver; one daughter, JoAnn Nekuda of Taylor; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, James Vance Pishna; one great-grandson, four brothers and three sisters.
Beverly Hayman
OGDEN, Utah -- Beverly M. Hayman, 62, of Ogden, Utah, formerly of Grand Island, died Nov. 4, 1998, at McKay-Dee Hospital following a battle with breast cancer.
Services were on Monday at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary. Bishop Wayne Crosby officiated. Burial was in Lindquist's Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch.
Memorials are suggested to the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah.
Survivors include her husband, Arnold of Ogden; one son, Steven Hayman of Ogden; four daughters, Teri Hayman of Ogden, Lori (Mrs. Casey) Frazier of Salt Lake City, Utah, Lisa (Mrs. Kent) Gomm of West Haven, Utah, and Linda (Mrs. Russell) Jensen of Roy, Utah; her father, Robert G. Meyer of Grand Island; her mother, Wanda Borgaard of Minden; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert T. Meyer of Nebraska; and one sister, Cindy Hartzell of Nebraska.
Alvira Martin
Alvira A. Martin, 83, of Grand Island died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Tim Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Martin was born on April 26, 1914, at Grand Island to John and Minnie (Stuhr) Cornelius. She was educated in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1932.
As a young woman, she worked at Wolbach's Department Store.
She married
Joseph Martin on May 15, 1937, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Grand Island.
She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and Girl Scouts and was a Brownie leader.
Survivors include her husband; one son, John R. Martin of Fort Collins, Colo.; two daughters, Ruth Ann (Mrs. Byron) Skeen of Grand Island and Margaret "Sue" (Mrs. Robert) Cordes of York; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Maxine Shirley of Albany, Calif.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, one great-grandchild and five sisters.
Walter Olson
Walter C. Olson, 91, of the Grand Island Veterans Home died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at the home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the All Faiths Chapel at the veterans home. The Rev. George Wheat will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the veterans home.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Olson was born on April 13, 1906, at Sturgeon Lake, Minn., to Charles and Olga (Walgreen) Olson. He grew up in Sturgeon Lake and attended grade school there. He received further education at Moose Lake, Minn.
He entered the U.S. Navy in 1921 and served until November 1945. After his discharge, he worked as a civilian employee of the military in Washington state. He retired in 1962 and came to Grand Island in 1972.
Mr. Olson was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Moose Lake.
Survivors include three sisters, Lillian Edin of Hinkley, Minn., Ethel Medjo of Grand Island and Alice Olson of Pine City, Minn.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Ethel Buck
ST. EDWARD -- Ethel Viola Buck, 93, of St. Edward died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at the Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Methodist-Presbyterian Church in St. Edward with the Rev. Mike McInnis officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in St. Edward.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward.
Mrs. Buck was born on Sept. 18, 1904, on a farm east of St. Edward to Carl. C. and Johanna (Thompsen) Jacobsen. She was educated at District 65 School in Platte County northeast of St. Edward.
She married
Christian Andreasen on Aug. 22, 1922, in Columbus. They lived and farmed in Platte County east of St. Edward until 1931, when they moved to a farm west of St. Edward. They farmed there until 1946, when they moved into St. Edward. He died on Jan. 14, 1960.
She married
Emery Buck on May 10, 1961, in Columbus. They lived on a farm in Boone County north of St. Edward until 1967, when they moved to St. Edward. He died on Nov. 29, 1973. She moved to the Cloverlodge Care Center in April 1974.
She was a member of the Ansgar Lutheran Church, where she was church pianist as a young woman. She joined the Methodist-Presbyterian Church when she moved to St. Edward.
Survivors include one daughter, Ramona (Mrs. Donald) Sivers of Deming, N.M.; one son, Ardett Andreasen of Guthrie Center, Iowa; three stepdaughters; one stepson; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by one son, Eldred; one daughter, Eloise Willard; two grandsons, three sisters and two brothers.
Neal Hartford
CENTRAL CITY -- Neal Hartford, 92, of Central City died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, at Memorial Hospital Long-Term Care in Aurora.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Barbara Hart will officiate. Burial will be in Rosehill cemetery near Palmer.
Memorials are suggested to the Merrick Foundation.
Mr. Hartford was born on Feb. 1, 1905, on the Hartford homestead near Palmer to Cornelius and Nellie (Washburn) Hartford. He attended rural Howard County school and helped on the family farm as a young man.
He married
Agnes Mary Fay on July 5, 1926, at St. Libory. They moved to Merrick County in 1929. They lived in the Central City area and farmed and ranched for 62 years.
Mr. Hartford was a charter member of the Merrick County Saddle Club, was awarded the Stockman of the Year Award in 1974 by the Merrick County Agricultural Society, served on the Merrick County Board of Supervisors for 12 years and served on the Central Platte Natural Resources District board for seven years. He rode in the Pony Express re-enactment in June 1949 and in the Nebraska wagon during part of the Bicentennial Trail Ride in 1976.
He loved horses and was an avid rider and trainer for many years, continuing to ride and help local ranchers with their cattle operations well into his 70s.
Survivors include a son, LaVern Hartford of Central City; four grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Hazel Helzer of Thomasville, Ga., and Maude Jones and Dorothy (Mrs. Jerry) Mudge, both of Cortland, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his wife; one grandson; two sisters, Margaret DeMoss and Edith Horn; and two brothers, Raymond Hartford and an infant, Gerald Lee Hartford.
