Agnes Austin
BROKEN BOW -- Agnes Austin, 88, of Broken Bow died Tuesday, April 13, 1999, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Doug Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery at Sargent.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.
Mrs. Austin was born on April 10, 1911, in the Round Valley community in Custer County to William H. and Guro (Ottum) Smets. She graduated from Berwyn High School in 1927.
She married
Boyd Austin on Aug. 14, 1936. Mrs. Austin graduated from Kearney State College in 1967. She taught school for 26 years, worked at Broken Bow State Bank, Production Credit Association in Broken Bow for many years and at Meston Ford in Broken Bow.
She attended Round Valley Lutheran Church and was a past member and president of the Broken Bow Does.
Survivors include her husband; one brother, Howard Smets of Anselmo; and one sister, Addie Turner of Ogallala.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Herb, Tex, Bill and Bob; and three infant sisters.
Neville Cargill
SCOTIA -- Neville Dale Cargill, 88, of Scotia died Monday, April 12, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Scotia Baptist Church. The Rev. Wayne Rouse will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery at Scotia.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Scotia Rescue Unit or the church.
Mr. Cargill was born on Dec. 6, 1910, in Greeley County to Ezra and Cytha (Iburg) Cargill. He grew up north of Scotia in Greeley County. He attended Parnell Rural School until the 10th grade and graduated from Scotia High School in 1929. He taught for one year at Amity Rural School.
He married
Mildred Maxine Acker on May 20, 1937. He then began farming with his father north of Scotia. Mr. Cargill continued to farm throughout his life. Mrs. Cargill died on March 27, 1978. Mr. Cargill continued to live on the farm.
He was a charter member of the Ord Evangelical Free Church and attended the Scotia Baptist Church. He was active in the churches and had taught Sunday school. He was a past member of the Parnell school board.
Survivors include one son, Ronald of Scotia; three daughters, Joan (Mrs. Don) Jensen of Greeley, Janis (Mrs. Dale) White of Beatrice and Anita (Mrs. Vernon) Moody of Scotia; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one brother, Keith of Scotia; and two sisters, Beth Stanger of St. Paul and Bernice Grantham of Scotia.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jean Kathleen; one brother, Perry; and two sisters, Faye Hamer and Aletha Wozniak.
Emma Radil
ORD -- Emma Radil, 99, of Ord died Tuesday, April 13, 1999, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ord Memorial Chapel. The Rev. James Warner will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood cemetery at Burwell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Valley County Hospital or the Valley County Rescue Unit.
Florence Reardon
ST. EDWARD -- Florence Laura Reardon, 90, of St. Edward died Tuesday, April 13, 1999, at Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Edward's Catholic Church. The Rev. Edward Gill will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m., with a 3 p.m. family rosary, Friday at Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward. Visitation will continue at 7 p.m. Friday with a wake service at the church. Visitation will resume from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Reardon was born on March 1, 1909, at Cornlea to John and Mary (Connelly) Headley. She graduated from Lindsay Holy Family Schools in 1926.
She married
Bernard "Barney" Reardon on March 4, 1930, at Lindsay Holy Family Catholic Church. They lived west of Boone and farmed in the Boone and Platte County area. She worked as a secretary at St. Edward Public School and later worked at the St. Edward Public Library for five years.
She entered Cloverlodge Care Center in December 1998.
She was a member of the St. Edward's Catholic Church, the Altar Society and Legion of Mary. She also served as a eucharistic minister. She taught religion classes for 49 years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the library board, which she served as treasurer.
Survivors include three sons, Norman, Tim and Tom, all of St. Edward; one daughter, Celine (Mrs. Joe) Klassen of Papillion; 36 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Ann Polzin of Omaha and Sister Collette Headley of Yuma, Ariz.; and one brother, George Headley of Platte Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1987; two sons, Dr. William Reardon in 1980 and Daniel Reardon in 1987; and two brothers, Sam and Norman Headley.
Vernon Shears
BROKEN BOW -- Vernon Paul Shears, 89, of Broken Bow died Tuesday, April 13, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Revs. Stanley Morrison and Dan Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest cemetery at Thedford.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Prairie Pioneer Center, Custer County Hospice and the Custer Care Center.
Mr. Shears was born on June 13, 1909, at Vinita, Okla., to William Aaron and Mary Celalia (Gambill) Shears. At the age of 3, he moved with his family to their homestead in Cherry County near Mullen.
After completing the eighth grade, he began working on his own as a cowboy. He was a rancher near Mullen and Thedford until moving to Broken Bow 44 years ago. He also did hay contracting from Merna to Alliance in the summertime. He was one of the last "old-time cowboys."
He married
Cornelia Jean Flores on Feb. 28, 1942, at Hyannis.
He was a member of the Custer Grange.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Marion (Mrs. Jon) Holmes of Miller, Laverna (Mrs. Ted) Trotter of Broken Bow, Nellie (Mrs. Duane Sr.) Owen of Brule and Tammy (Mrs. Ritch) Banfe of Strasburg, Colo.; two sons, Claude of Broken Bow and Jerry of Alda; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a twin brother, Verl; two other brothers, Kenneth and Billy Jo; and two sisters, Dorothy Moran and Nellie Jean Weidner.
Keith Franke
Keith R. Franke, 77, of Grand Island died Monday, June 29, 1998, at St. Francis Memorial Health Skilled Care.
Mr. Franke will be cremated. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. John Russell will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday.
Memorials are suggested to hospice, the American Cancer Society or St. Pauls Lutheran Church.
Sallymae Hawkins
Sallymae Hawkins, 80, of 9 Navajo Drive died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, at St. Francis Skilled Care.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with the Rev. Don Larmore officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church with a rosary service at 7 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
