Wanda Biram
OCONTO -- Wanda L. Biram, 75, of Oconto, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington after a short illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Larry Klein officiating. Burial will be in the Oconto Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Oconto Cemetery.
Mrs. Biram was born on Oct. 3, 1922, in Oconto to Fred and Anna (Buckner) Thurman. She grew up and was educated in the Lomax community, and graduated from Eddyville High School. She attended Kearney State Teachers College and taught rural school for one year. She then worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years.
She married
Ted Biram on July 12, 1950, at Valentine. Following her retirement from the postal service, the couple worked as custodians at Oconto Public Schools.
She continued her yardwork and care of the Oconto Cemetery, both of which were important to her.
Survivors include her brother, Dr. Glen Thurman of Albuquerque, N.M.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Wilma Ruge
CENTRAL CITY -- Wilma Ruge, 69, of Central City, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at Community Care in Central City.
Services are pending with the Solt Funeral Home in Central City.
Mabel Smith
ALBION -- Mabel L. Smith, 91, of Albion, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Home in Albion.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Albion with the Rev. Eric Biehl officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset cemetery at Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Connie Walkup
NORTH LOUP -- Connie Walkup, 64, of North Loup, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the North Loup United Methodist Church with the Rev. Melanie Adams officiating. Her body was cremated, and burial will be at a later date at Hillside cemetery in North Loup. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the North Loup Rescue Unit.
Mrs. Walkup was born on Aug. 26, 1933, at North Loup to George and Erma Mae (Smith) Eberhart. She was educated at North Loup and graduated from North Loup High School in 1951.
She married
Neil Layer on June 17, 1951. They farmed in the Mira Valley area of Valley County for a few years. The couple then lived in England, Newfoundland, New Mexico and Kansas for 15 years while he served in the U.S. Air Force. In New Mexico, they owned and operated a convenience store. He died in 1985, and she moved back to North Loup. She married
Gordon Dean Walkup on May 14, 1988, and the couple made their home in North Loup.
She enjoyed flowers and plants, gardening and crocheting.
Survivors include her husband of North Loup; one son, Robert Layer of Ruidosa, N.M.; two daughters, Sharon (Mrs. Ken) Miles of Burlingame, Kan., and Julie (Mrs. Keith) Davis of Emporia, Kan.; three stepdaughters, Vivian Walkup of Ord, Patricia Walkup of Scotia and Joy (Mrs. Richard) Krohnlom of Springfield; two stepsons, Gregory Walkup of Oxnard, Calif., and Carl Walkup of Ozark, Mo.; seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Jolene Bugay of Columbus, Gwen Lockhart of North Loup and Darlene Schwieger of North Loup.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; an infant son; a sister, Sharon Loften; and an infant sister.
Henry Wit
Henry A. Wit, 81, of Grand Island died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at Park Place Health Care and Rehab Center.
Services are pending with Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Emil Dlugosh
ORD -- Emil Dlugosh, 90, of Ord died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Mr. Dlugosh was cremated. Memorial services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Ord Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Mark Maresh will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Additional services will be conducted by Ord Odd Fellows Lodge 90.
Memorials are suggested to the Corner Cottage or the Valley County Hospital Foundation.
Mr. Dlugosh was born on Nov. 9, 1907, at Stuart to John and Mary (Knebel) Dlugosh. He moved to Valley County with his family at a young age. He attended school at Ord and graduated from Ord High School in 1927.
He married
Ruth Footwangler on Sept. 14, 1931, at Seward. They lived and farmed in the Mira Valley area of Valley County throughout their marriage. Mrs. Dlugosh died on Dec. 27, 1991. Mr. Dlugosh continued to live on the farm south of Ord until moving to the Corner Cottage at Ord.
He was a member of the Ord Elks Lodge and the Ord Oddfellows Lodge. He was a member of the Vinton school board for a number of years.
Survivors include a son, Larry Dlugosh of Lincoln; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a brother, Edward Dlugosh of Kingman, Ariz.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Betty; an infant son, Donald; and four brothers, Earnest, Leonard, John and Joseph.
Floyd Hackett
BURWELL -- Floyd F. Hackett, 82, of Burwell died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Assembly of God Church in Burwell. The Rev. Mike Blatchley will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell.
Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mr. Hackett was born on Jan. 9, 1916, in Burwell to Ira and Ella Hackett.
He married
Lillian Van Pelt on Aug. 31, 1935, in Taylor. He worked as a meat cutter for the Burwell Butter Factory for many years.
He served in the U.S. Army from May 1945 to March 1946. He moved to Davenport, Iowa, in 1955 to work as a government meat inspector at Oscar Mayer Co. He retired in 1981 and moved back to Burwell.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ray of Taylor and Don of Le Claire, Iowa; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Leo of Torrington, Wyo.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sandra Kay; and four sisters, Gladys Nelson, Dorothy Henderson, Alice Palmer and Frieda Hackett.
Nellie Hall
BROKEN BOW -- Nellie Mae Hall, 89, of Broken Bow died Monday, July 20, 1998, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Broken Bow Cemetery. The Rev. Doug Jones will officiate.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Mrs. Hall was born on Oct. 10, 1908, at Westerville to Clarence Elbridge and Mae (Hammond) Evans. She grew up in the Westerville area and attended Cherryville Country School.
She married
Victor Hall on March 19, 1927, at Glenwood, Iowa. They lived on a farm south of Broken Bow, where they farmed and ranched and raised their family. Mr. Hall died on March 13, 1980. Mrs. Hall remained on the farm until moving to Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Survivors include one son, Bob Hall of Broken Bow; two daughters, Louise (Mrs. Ed) Troyer of Ashland and Arlene (Mrs. Everett) Moninger of Merna; 15 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Ruby Gracey; two sons, Chris Hall and an infant son; two brothers; and one sister.
