Eva Smith
Eva J. Smith, 80, of Grand Island died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cedarview cemetery near Doniphan.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Milo Burch
CENTRAL CITY -- Milo Ray Burch, 63, of Central City died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, in Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Central City Cemetery. The Rev. Debra Tompsett-Welch will officiate.
Mr. Burch was cremated. There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Solt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Burch was born on Feb. 23, 1935, in Pipestone, Minn., to Clifford and Leona (Gilfillan) Burch. He was raised in the Pipestone area, where he attended grade school. He lived there until his early 20s and then moved to Grand Island.
He married
Marcella Weeks on Oct. 27, 1975, at Egan, S.D. They worked for a rural water company for about seven years. The couple moved in 1982 to Central City, where Mr. Burch was self-employed with Milo's Lawn Service, which also included snow removal. He worked until August, when illness forced him to retire.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting and playing bingo and cards. He also volunteered his time calling bingo at Litzenberg Long-term Care in Central City.
Survivors include his wife; six stepchildren; seven step grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; one brother, Vincen Gilfillan of Dolan Springs, Ariz.; and one sister, Maxine Smith of Martinez, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
Alice Hulinsky
BURWELL -- Alice Marie Hulinsky, 79, of Burwell died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Ord United Methodist Church. The Rev. Roger Gillming will officiate. Burial will be in the National Bohemian Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Valley County Nursing Home.
Mrs. Hulinsky was born on June 17, 1919, in Geranium Township in Valley County to Frank and Emma (Maresh) Bruha. She grew up in Valley County and attended Fairplay District 26 School in rural Valley County. She then worked as a housekeeper and a nurse's aide.
She married
Mike Hulinsky on Nov. 19, 1940, at Burwell. They farmed south of Burwell for 47 years and moved into Burwell in 1987.
She enjoyed sewing, cooking, going on long walks, gardening and reading the Bible.
Survivors include her husband; four sons, Stanley of Ord, Vincent of Burwell and Raymond and Lumir, both of Lincoln; a daughter, Edith Burson of Holdrege; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Vincent Bruha of North Platte; and three sisters, Dorothy Meuret of Grand Island, Agnes Cernik of Ord and Minnie Vopat of Kearney.
She was preceded in death by three grandchildren and one infant brother.
Fern Johnson
OSCEOLA -- Fern V. Johnson, 74, of Osceola, formerly of Grand Island, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at Osceola.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Shelby. The Rev. John Ewton will officiate. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Immanuel cemetery at rural Bertrand.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home in Osceola.
Memorials are suggested to the Osceola Senior Center or Gideons Society.
Mrs. Johnson was born on Sept. 11, 1924, at Belvidere, S.D., to Andrew and Violet (Nelson) Lilja. She graduated from Holdrege High School in 1942.
She worked in food service for the schools and hospitals in Grand Island and Lexington.
She married
Palmer Johnson on July 27, 1946, at Holdrege. She lived in Osceola for eight years after living in Grand Island.
She was a member of the Shelby Methodist Church, Polk County Senior Citizens and Gideons Auxiliary.
Survivors include one son, Terry John of Arlington, Texas; two daughters, Vianna (Mrs. Jeffrey) Rice of Lakewood, Colo., and Michelle (Mrs. Morace) Schmoker of Shelby; and six grandchildren.
Her husband died on Oct. 17, 1995. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Milton and Jack.
Alvin Layher
st. paul -- Alvin Layher, 85, of St. Paul died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery at St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Layher was born on May 27, 1913, on the family farm north of St. Paul to Fred and Minta (Hunter) Layher. He was educated at District 21 School north of St. Paul and grew up on the family farm. He then helped his father farm.
He married
Alice Kiser on June 1, 1936, at Grand Island. The couple farmed north of St. Paul and purchased the family farm in 1952. He farmed there until 1974, when he moved into St. Paul. He then worked for several farmers until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, LaVonne Hansen and Connie (Mrs. Wilbur) Nielsen, both of Grand Island, and Loretta (Mrs. Lawrence) Kowalski of St. Paul; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Robert; one grandson; two brothers, Lloyd and Max; and three sisters, Vera, Blanche and Phyllis.
Fred Saner
BROKEN BOW -- Fred W. Saner, 93, of Broken Bow died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. David Hansen will officiate. Burial will be in the Dunning Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the United Church of Christ in Dunning and to the Prairie Pioneer Center in Broken Bow.
Mr. Saner was born on May 3, 1905, at Ellis to OIiver and Louisa (Weideman) Saner. He grew up in the Dunning area, where he attended school.
He ranched and operated a cream station in Dunning for many years. He later sold the station to the McMullens and worked for McMullen Propane for several years. He also worked in road construction and later returned to ranching.
He married
Dencie Fisher on May 24, 1957. They lived in Dunning until moving to Broken Bow.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Kenneth Saner of Alda; one daughter, Evelyn (Mrs. Dale) Wing of Ogden, Utah; one stepson, Donald Strand of Live Oaks, Fla.; five grandchildren; three step grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and one step great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Chet, Pearl, Harley and Vesta.
